Why don't you crochet yourself a dishcloth? Normally they are made with cotton yarn, but you could practice with any yarn - just single crochet 50 stitches, turn, and alternately single crochet and double crochet across until you have a large square, then tie it off.
Crocheting is really easy, just always use the top of the loop to make your next stitch in....

use a J hook and chain about 35 chains then turn and go back and either sc crochet in each one across or double crochet in each one across. (I DBL across) When you get to the end -chain 3 and turn and then double crochet across to the other end and repeat (ch 3 turn dbl)

It will make a simple scarf and I bet you come out ok. if you "lose" the end put a small paper clip in the last stitch to help you out.

If you go to Annie's Attic They have a free pattern everyday that you can print or copy to your computer explore tht site on the stitches they have little videos that show how the stitch is done take time to explore the site. I might add that I've been crocheting for years and can't do slippers and that fancy stuff.My DS' are stuck with lots of afghans

And do remember to count the stitches on each row. It is easy to skip that last or first stitch.

I agree with Minnie; just do a scarf as wide as you want in either all sc or dc. If you have only one skein of yarn, 35 stitches wide might be too wide for the amount of yarn you have. I like a J hook for worsted weight yarn as well as G and H. Single crochet stitches would make a warmer scarf without such large "holes" or spaces between the stitches, but it will go more slowly too. You could even make a border of stitches by going around the scarf for a row or three.

By the time you finish this scarf, you will have perfected the evenness of your stitches and be ready for anything. Look at the yarn company sites for free patterns. lionbrand.com, red heart or coatsandclark, bernat.

Of course, for a variation you could do a row of single crochet, and then a row double crochet, over an over. ;)

Here's what I would do if I were trying to perfect my technique. Rather than something as large as a scarf, I would do pot holders. Start with single crochet and make a pot holder for each kind of stich concentrating on making your stitches uniform.

Connie...there are vidoes on youtube that teach crocheting. This is how my sister learned after I found her some videos on there. LOL..I think EVERYTHING is on Youtube! Can't help with an easy pattern though. I ony make afghans and if I don't have a pattern I make up my own and get repeticious with it! I started one a few years ago and just got it out last night to finish. If you look to the side on there you'll see some on how to make scares, etc. I learned in Brownies (first part of girl scouts ) and was hooked from then on. It's so relaxing to me....good luck!

Annie's Attic... my mom used to get a magazine from them. It always had all kinds of crochet projects in it, from simple and easy to complicated and really difficult.

I taught myself to crochet a couple of years ago, while watching a video online. I am left handed also which to me, made it harder to learn.
The big encouragement I can give, is to take your time and understand that you may have to pull out a few dozen rows from time to time.
I started off making a blanket, and was not disappointed in my first project.
I just strated crocheting, and it just grew and grew.
It was great fun, and I made another project out of finding yarn cheap.

You are probably ready to make an item after practicing that long. Good for you. Mistakes are part of learning, and we all still make them. What do you want to make?

By the way, pot holders are nice, but if you make them with the more holey stitches like dc or tc, you will burn your fingers when you take a hot pan from the oven.

My sister and I taught ourselves to crochet when our Dad was in the hospital......we thought our sister-in-law had crocheted an afghan for him. We figured if Vee could do it, anybody could.
She came in the next day while we were crocheting......and said it was something she had always wanted to learn.
Her Mom had made the afghan for my Dad. LOL
Connie, if my sister and I could learn to crochet, anyone can do it....except maybe our sister-in-law.

I'm a lefty and I nearly drove my Mom batty when she was trying to teach me as she was right handed. I eventually caught on to how to crochet.
If I am going to make an afghan, I just single crochet a long row (about 150 stitches) and crochet as one single piece (like a giant potholder..lol). I can't make things that have granny squares etc because I lose interest and they never get sewn together.
I have made many afghans as gifts and they were all very well received.

Good gosh I did two rows and I dunno what I did those two rows but it worked. LOL Now I am lost totally.

remember I said at the end to chain one and then turn around and go back and
leave the bottom (the first chain row) alone you are done with it.

If you are doing just sc (single crochet) chain one at the end and turn and put the hook in the chain next to the hook if you are doing dc (double crochet) then chain three at the end turn (it acts as the first DC in the row)

look at the link below this will take you to a little video that shows how the DC is worked study it, look at how the chain is at the end of the row that is where you turned to start the next row . look at it a couple of times

This is what I am doing...on the 3rd row (IF I remember right!) turning is the problem. I don't understand how I did it already and NOW can't get it! GRRRRRR
Part of the problem was DH came in from work and started yapping at me and I was trying to concentrate. I ripped it out so many times the yarn was starting to get all stretched out.
I will try later, too much going on this morning.

Here is the "simple" dishcloth pattern:

Starting chain: chain 36.
Note: At the end of each row, you will chain 1, then turn the work around to
start the next row.
Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook, single crochet in
each chain across. (35 single crochet)
Row 2: Single crochet in each single crochet across. (35 single crochet)
Rows 3 - 38: Repeat row 2.
End off, leaving a length of about 6 inches to weave in. Weave in the ends,
using a large-eye yarn needle.

OK I *might* have gotten it! LOL Will try later. Do your chain and then go to the last stitch you did and YO and bring it back thru and crochet in the opposite direction you were going?
It was crocheting in the opposite direction that got me..it didn't feel right and after doing the first stitch it felt like i was just balling up the yarn...I will find out. Cross your fingers Minnie! ;)

You are holding the done part in your hand now make the chain at the end and then with your left hand pull the done part around to your left then you have the done part on the left and the hook with the three chains on the right now dip down to the space next to the chain and start doing a dc or sc .

I knew it was too good to last! LOL
I was whizzing along and thought to myself gee I'm done with this row already?? Put it down and straighten it out and instead of a square shape I see what is begining to look like a pryamid! Urgggh. Now I ripped out a bunch of it to where it looks "square" again.......*sigh* now to figure out what the heck row that is and start all over again!

Kat gave some great advice with her you tube illustrtion. I saved it and also went to the site of the gal who made the videos worth keeping in your favorites. I'm going to watch some of them and try something new myself. after a while you'll be able to do it while watching TV and not really thinking about it.
