Farmers Market and a short get-together!

I took a trip to Minneapolis this morning to check out the farmer's market. The Minneapolis Farmer's Market is absolutely huge (about 6 square blocks), and you can get anything there...great produce, free-range and organic meats, cheeses, pottery, soaps, olive oils, clothing, jewelry, nuts, breads....well, you get the idea. I got some wonderful sweet corn, golden beets, habaneros so I can make more "Gold", a really cool bamboo spatula and some yummy mixed Mediterranian Olives.

I met up with Teresa_mn there, too! She is a delightful person, but unfortunately she was feeling ill and we didn't get to spend more than about a half hour together. I hope to get together with her again since she is only about an hour from me!

Teresa, I do hope you are feeling better.

All in all it was a great way to spend a Saturday morning!

I am trying to get together a group of people who are interested in starting a farmer's market in Batesville, MS. I want to involve the Panola Partnership and the City as well, so I need a pretty sizeable group. It's long overdue, in my opinion! Oxford has a market, but I don't want to drive over there to set up as a vendor or shop as a customer. I want to support our local economy and agriculture. I'd like to get on the agenda at an upcoming City Board meeting to see if the open grassy area in the City Park can be used. I have set up a Facebook group for anyone who is interested. I will be posting all updates and meetings on the FB group, so it's the best way to stay abreast of any changes or announcements. Crafts at a farmers market

Our farmers Market is a year- round indoor market. for the farmers it is a growers only market with a wide variety of meats eggs vegetables fruit and one dairy then we have food vendors that make fresh from scratch foods ethnic foods , breads and other bake goods, homemade pimento cheese, salsa ,granola etc. We have 2 free trade coffee and 1 tea vendor. Then we have craft/art vendors everything from earrings,aprons and clothing, knitted items, pottery, metal sculpture, photography, candles , soap, Homemade cleaning etc these are hand made items. This works for our market- making it the place to be on Saturday mornings. Customers can eat breakfast sip coffee talk with friends and get almost everything on there shopping list from local vendors instead of heading to "Walmart" . It is nothing like a flea market either! Being a year round market the non farm vendors help keep the market going all winter. After all how many people think about going to a farmers market after the summer is ended. We (with season extention) we are able to sell till at least Jan. but if we didn't have other vendors we wouldn't have enough farmers to draw people there in the fall winter months. I think we help each other not hurt. During the summer when berries and produce are plentyful people are there to buy fresh produce first and may buy craft items if they are buying for a special occasion and during the late fall folks are thnking about holiday shopping and come for the crafts and then realize there is fresh produce still avalable. Most of our farmers have tried to come up with craft type or value added items we can sell for holiday shoppers too.

I think the Song Haven Farm has a reasonable selection of produce, and not too high a price. (See link.) These folks only provide 15 weeks of produce (mid-July- mid-October), and they limit their selection somewhat, but they do provide enough that you could be happy cooking and eating produce for 4 months. I think their listing would be a good start for planning a CSA offering. Note that they only offer 25 shares, but their offerings also probably do not exhaust them as much as some of the larger CSAs with more variety of offerings. A CSA is no good if you are exhausted by the experience, and quit soon after starting. I had several conversations with the owner of another CSA in their area, and she also limited her shares, but had a longer time period of offerings because she had a greenhouse (mostly solar) to produce the food earlier. I believe she had something like 75 shares, each around $1200, and each requiring a couple half days of work during the year. She lived simply but comfortably on the income produced. I think she did not want to increase her farm size because it would have been too much work for her, and she did not want to hire full time help. She did have several unpaid summer interns who lived on the farm to learn techniques, and of course, work hard! We only sell at Farmers Markets. I have sold to our school district (the one I work at) and at a grocery store in our hometown and at one 30 miles away where I grew up. We have several chefs who purchase produce from our market and they have a "Local Special" every week. I also had a chef who bought pickling cucs for homemade pickles for their sandwiches for weeks. I don't actively seek out chefs or wholesale markets. I am not large enough to justify it, IMO. Also, if I sell wholesale, that doesn't give me much to sell at the Farmers Markets. All my wholesale "Sales" were because of an excessive amount of produce and low sales due to a glut of produce at the market. My sales to my school were because the head person came and talked to me about it. Problem is, I don't work for free and her budget for food required extremely cheap inputs. I wasn't going to plant, grow, harvest, wash and bag Romaine lettuce for 50 cents a head, when I was selling it for $2.50-3.00 a head at the market. She ordered 15 heads of romaine and 5 pounds of spinach(baby leaf) for the salad bars. I dropped it off at the central Kitchen and submitted my bill for $45. I got an email later that said basically she thought my bill was too high and she was expecting something in the $10-15 range. She paid me and never ordered anything from me again. I have also been insulted by chefs. it was several years ago and a local chef (who is no longer in business) stopped by the market and said he would give me 50 cents a pound for the nicest red slicers I had available. Keep in mind this was mid June and I was selling out at $3.50 a pound. I laughed to my wife after he left. I guess my experience with wholesale, food service and chefs has been nothing but bad, so I never went back to it. If the chef is willing to pay for a quality product, I will work with them. For me, I limit the quantity of what I grow and grow a larger variety of produce. This makes my stand more attractive to customers and helps me gain and maintain my customer base. My first meeting with a CF'er was Saturday and it had to end after about 30 minutes. I was not feeling well and thought I would go home and lay down. I never expected to spend 2 nites in ICU, however.

Linda was charming! Too bad we couldn't have spent more time together - she had driven such a long way. She brought me a jar of Annie's Salsa (can't wait to try it), a jar of jam and a gorgeous pair of earrings. Yes - she makes jewlery too!

I brought tomatoes, Sun Gold and Cherokee Purple, and some of my salsa seasoning for fresh tomatoes. I wasn't thinking clearly when I left home as I was not up to par. I forgot to bring the jars of Bread N Butter pickles and refrigerator dills.

Maybe next time Linda! I'm not sure I will make it to Stillwater next weekend but thanks so much for the invite. I'll have to recover first.

After reading so many posts about Annie's Salsa, I finally tried the jar Linda brought me last Saturday. I put some over a scrambled egg. It was fantastic!

Thanks again Linda for sharing a jar of this fabulous salsa with me!

You're welcome, Teresa. Yes, it is the best salsa recipe I've ever tried. I make it exclusively, now, for about the last 6 years or so, I think!

I had that huge Cherokee Purple tomato for dinner last night. Yummy! thanks again for your gifts, too!

I ate the whole thing, along with a fried egg sandwich...I was stuffed!

Elery eats my salsa on scrambled eggs too, I just can't manage to do that, especially in the morning!

Wow Teresa I'm glad you're feeling better. Hope everything is OK.

The most enjoyable day of my summer vacation was spent on a pontoon boat on that river that runs by Stillwater! St. Somethingorother.

Cookebook, it's the beautiful St. Croix River. That's the same river we canoe every year for our annual girl's weekend. Of course we go about 20-30 minutes north where it is more shallow. It's all sand-bottom, too!

But wait just a doggone minute.... You were here this summer and that closeby but never let us know? Now there was a CF get-together that could have been a blast!

Linda - glad you liked the Cherokee Purple. And too bad you don't live closer. I picked another 36 today. They are going to a friend's house for a party she is having tomorrow nite.

I've never had any luck with heirloom tomatoes; they just do not perform well for me. Cherokee Purple is beyond prolific. I have 3 plants that are loaded with tomatoes and bending my heavy duty cages to the ground.

You said you think the tomato I gave you is huge????? That was about a 6 on a scale of 10. My largest so far has been 3lbs. 9oz.

Being that you are so fond of Annie's Salsa you probably won't want to use the dry seasoning I gave you for more salsa. It goes well in sour cream, and works well as a fajita marinade. I have also sprinkled a little into corn chowder as well as cheddar corn bread.

You can tell by looking at the bag that there are no binding ingredients so the mix seperates. Mix it up well before using.
