Do not skip the insulin. There are soft packs that keep it cool. Your airlines can help you along with your diabetic staff at the medical center. Also check with your pharmastist. You can contact the company also.
It should stay with you, and again contact your airlines to find out what you can carry on, and how to pack your meds.

It was differenet people at the airlines that gave me the contradictory information. My pharmacist is foreign and he was no help at all. How would a cool pack keep cool on a long flight? I have a gel pack that can be frozen, but I don't think the insulin should be right next to icy things. I think maybe I'll see if I can contact the company that makes the insulin. Here's [link below] the advice on the American Diabetes web site. Beyond that...I have a diabetic friend who traveled the US with her insulin stored in a temperature controlled soft pack that she carried on her person throughout her trip. Let your insulin reach the required refrigeration temperature and then insert it into the travel soft pack. That should be plenty good for a few hours flight. Also...you should carry a refillable prescription in case something goes awry.

Dee, the below info should help you. Since you should carry all insulin on your person or in a carry on bag, you shouldn't need any special packaging in flight.

How To Store Insulin
Store insulin you are not using in a refrigerator. It is a protein dissolved in water, sort of like a soup stock, so keep it cold to prevent it from spoiling. Keep it between 36º and 46º F. If it gets colder it will freeze. If the insulin freezes, when it thaws it will separate and clump and will no longer be usable. If it gets warmer it will be ok for awhile but will eventually spoil.
If it starts to spoil, bacteria growing in it breaks down the insulin. It won't hurt you to use this. However, its not as effective so your blood sugar will be higher than you expect even though you took the right amount of insulin at the right time.
It is ok to keep a bottle of insulin you are using at room temperature for up to 28 days (room temperature is 59º to 86º F). The preservative in insulin keeps it from spoiling this long.
Insulin at room temperature injected into the skin is more comfortable for many people. Also, it may be easier to get rid of air bubbles in the syringe when it is at room temperature.
If you live in a hot climate and your room temperature is above 80º, keep your insulin in the refrigerator.
Insulin in a pen can only be kept at room temperature for 2 weeks before it begins to spoil. Check with your pharmacist, the package insert or the manufacturer's websites.
Insulin used past 28 days at room temperature or past the expiration date on the box may still be good. However, using it may cause control problems and is not recommended.
Lantus, Humalog and Novolog seem to spoil faster than Regular and NPH.

DH uses pens for both his insulins and they seem to keep better. We never have to throw any out since he changed. They are also easier to measure, just count and use. No measuring and they are very easy to travel with.
If you don't have the pens, ask your Dr. They do not have to be refrigated, but he does keep them at room temp, unless it is very hot in the summer. Let me know if you want more information

DH was told to keep his (regular insulin, then Lantus and Novolog) refrigerated until he opened them and started using them. Then, they said they don't have to be refrigerated. The main problem it has is getting too hot. He was told not to leave it in a hot car for too long. We travel a lot - both by car and by air. He has never had any problems and he doesn't refrigerate it - just keeps it in the carry on luggage.

PS Don't skip the insulin! If you are on vacation, you may not be sticking to your diet as well as you should and you will really need your insulin.

Dee--the airlines are not the ones that set the regulations, that is up to TSA. Following is a link to the guidelines you should follow to clear security at the airport. It is pretty far down on the page.

Jut wanted to affirm-DD(17) uses Humalog and NPH. Its stored in the refrigerator until it is opened, then sits on the counter for 28 days. Remember-if you go to the beach to keep it cool-we use a small lunchbox with a cold pack.

I guess I'll just keep it at room temperature. I thought opened insulin had to be refrigerated and then disposed of after 28 days. I have a small black medicine kit that I can carry the insulin in and a gel pack will fit into it. I still have a week before I leave, so I may change my mind and carry it with a frozen gel pack just to be safe.
