my favorite. That and a hot cup of coffee and I'm in
heaven. But, I wouldn't stand in line, as I would
rather make it at home, first.

I don't do well standing in lines for anything. Especially when I'm giving people my hard-earned money.

A good burger is heavenly, but stand in line a long time for it? No thanks. I've left more than a few places because of lines.

Not much of anything. If I'm at a restaurant on a busy night and it'll be 15 minutes for a table, I'll wait. If there's a line of 4 people at Dairy Queen, I'll wait.

But for hours or around the block? Not happening, there's nothing in the world that I like well enough to wait in line so someone can be rude to me. Ugh, who do these people think they are, anyway?

I'll go home and make whatever it is, I'm too impatient. If I waited for very long for a burger and then got treated badly I'm afraid I'd be inclined to chew someone up and spit them out. What the he!! happened to customer service? Sheesh.

This a cooking forum....we don't stand in line for food....we go home and make it.
I remember once driving from Newberg new York to Philadelphia....and walking out of 5 restaurants because the lines were too long....finally it got late enough that no one else was eating!
Nope....we are a gang of people here who mostly cook our own....but maybe we would wait in line for some grass fed beef at a good price!

We don't wait for hours, but my family and I have been known to stand in a long line for fried seafood from the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The seafood - whole clams, clam strips, scallops, etc. - are super fresh and fried in a delicate batter that is not goopy and greasy and perfectly complements, but never overwhelms the food. Their onion rings and fries make great sides and they provide plenty of tartar sauce for dipping. There's a lemonade stand right beside it where you can get a fresh-squeezed drink while you wait for your order.

There is no seating. You take your cardboard tray of overfilled cartons of deliciousness and find a bench or nearby plot of grass to picnic on and enjoy the meal looking out onto the rocky Atlantic coast.

To me, priceless. And worth the wait for a once-a-year treat.

Oh my goodness, amck, that sounds heavenly!

We patiently stand in line to get a cone at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream on a hot, humid weekend. The line goes thru the shop, out the door, and then over the drawbridge. We stand on the bridge and watch the boats while we wait. I've met people from all over the country standing in line waiting for a cone. There's also always lots of dogs in that line patiently waiting with their owners for their dish of ice cream too!

When I was in college in Chicago a few years ago, we'd go out to dinner on Saturday nights and it was usually a hour and a half wait for a table at any popular restaurant. I was shocked when I first experienced but I got used to it and saw it as part of the dining out culture. Some of my favorite memories were "camping out" on the floor and chatting with my friends while we waited for our buzzer to go off.

We don't stand in line or endure long waits at restaurants. We'll stand at the order window at the Lobster Shack at Two Lights or the Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster in S. Freeport, or the Fisherman's Co-op in Five Islands, in Maine, and a few other places like that. Not much else worth waiting for.

We stood in line twice this year at the Iowa State Fair for a shake from the Dairy Barn. Strawberry for me, chocolate for Bruce. The last time there, as we picked up our order we notice a sign on the window around the corner with no one there 'Shake orders only'. LOL we laughed!!!
Next year we will know. It's a once a year shake that is worth the wait!

Back, a hundred years ago, when I was in the 'Ahmy', we used to have to stand in line for 'EVERYTHING', even going
to the bathroom, (latrine), to take a dump. At that time I swore that when I got to be a free man again, that I would never, EVER, stand in line for ANYTHING, ever again. And, I have been true to my word. Except at the Motor Vehicle Department,where they have you by the couliones, so to speak. I'm just sayin...........

Kimballs ice cream, Westford MA. Last year when we had our MA house on the market, we'd go to Kimballs when someone wanted to see it. There's ALWAYS a line at Kimballs. We'd get a large scoop, about the size of a baby's head, and eat it while anxiously waiting to hear from the realtor. Thank goodness that's over.

Oh LindaC, don't you ever travel? There are times when a REAL kitchen is 8 hours away, and the minibar isn't even big enough to squeeze in a doggie bag! If it is a choice between no line at the fast food chain, or a queue at a real eaterie, it is no choice at all.

Let's seeee, when we go to the Eastern States Exposition(the Big E to people in the NorthEast) We will head over to the Maine building and wait in line for the baked potato. I like mine with just butter. Wayne and everyone else it seems, get the works for toppings. He will also wait in line for one of the traditional lobster rolls. Browns ice cream up at the "Nubble". Indian Pudding being my favorite flavor there. Or I will wait for Peppermint stick ice cream at Village Scoop in the center of town in York Maine. But no restaurants come to mind that I'll wait a long time for. NancyLouise

I think I'd stand in line also for a good lobster roll or some great fried clams. Unfortunately those just aren't available where I live, which is in one of the cities hardest hit by one of the two big tornadoes last year. It seems the measure of the progress of the rebuilding efforts has been by the grand reopening today of the Krispy Kreme donut shop. It did make headlines when the lines started forming late last night.

The White House Grill when I'm craving a Turkish Plate (marinated and grilled lamb on a bed of grilled eggplant that's covered w/tzatziki sauce with incredibly garlic-ey green beans on the side). Worth waiting on a busy weekend night to watch the kitchen crew clapping and dancing to loud Turkish music and Raci cruising from table to table beating on a drum and asking if you've had enough garlic.

I know the place you mean, Angela. I dunno...there's a podunk cafe in the boontoolies to the north that has a cheeseburger that might rival that one.

Buster's bugers and crinkle fries. I don't even eat red meat anymore and I'd still eat theirs. What can you say about a place that has sports memorabilia and the Mona Lisa both on their walls? It's a biker place.

The best ravioli and chicken parm on the planet, at Spirito's in Elizabeth, N.J. The same waitresses are there as when DH was growing up 30 years ago.

I've never understood people waiting for an hour to eat at mediocre chain restaurants like Applebee's or Olive Garden, when there are so many great family-owned restaurants in our area.

Gianelli sausage sandwiches at the State Fair. MMmmmmm! "Get some Gianelli in your belly." Actually the DH and I will go to the fair early on a sunday morning and hover near the stand at 10:30am until they're ready to open. Gianelli is a local sausage company. They make great Italian sausages.

20 minutes is my upper limit for waiting for a table at a restaurant. I live in Houston and there is ALWAYS another option just next door or down the street. But the reality is, if I were in a situation where I was hungry and it was wait an hour or eat at MickeyD's, I'd go to MickeyD's.

I have, in my lifetime, been forced into situations of waiting 1.5 hours+ for a table and I'm not exaggerating. And when I say forced, I mean, I had no choice as it was due to circumstances over which I had no control. I will not do it again. Period.

There is a BBQ spot in Austin (I can't remember the name of it but it's apparently pretty famous) that cooks a certain amount of meat every day and when it's gone, it's gone. People line up an hour or two before it opens to make sure they can get some. Especially on the weekends, but even on weekdays, if you don't get there early enough before they open, you just won't get any. I've never had it but would be willing to try it -- if someone else did the waiting!! Can it really be that good??

amck's seafood place reminds me of Ivar's in Seattle. It's actually the opposite of waiting in line. It's been years since I was there so I don't know if it still works this way but there is no line. Everyone just bunches up at the counter and works toward catching the eye of one of the order takers. You could be there for a minute or two or forever if you're not good at getting their attention. The salmon there was cheap and delicious and you could eat on the pier next to the restaurant so it was lots of fun. You just had to be agressive (no problem for me!).

Since maxmom mentioned Krispy Kreme, it reminded me of when they opened here in Houston several years ago. There was a lot of hype and people waited in line for their donuts. And ummm... yeah, they were ok. (I didn't wait in line but a guy in my office did and brought some in for us to try.) But we already have the very best ever donuts here at a place called Shipley's where you never have to wait. KK lasted about four years or so before they all closed up. Just goes to show you. Novelty & hype aren't enough to overcome competition of a better product.

On a final note to my loooong post, I have waited a long time for a burger - an incredibly delicious burger & wonderful fries - at a place called the Petrol Station here in Houston. However, it's a very pleasant bar with out door seating and lots of beers on tap. So you go, you order your burger, you drink your beer, you hang out. An hour later or so, depending on how busy they are, your burger arrives. Not the same as waiting in line and well worth the wait. Problem there is their kitchen is teeny tiny and I think they can only make four burgers at a time. Someone told me that they are currently expanding their kitchen so I only hope the quality doesn't suffer once they do. That is a darn good burger. Bun is good, toppings are perfect and fries are homemade and fabulous.

Lowspark: The popularity of Krispy Kreme here just may have something to do with my state being second in the rate of obesity. I haven't had a KK in about twenty years, but I have had a few much, much better donuts.
