Using a grommet for shade pull

I bought the cutest vintage shade pull last summer and want to use it on a new roller shade I bought. This vinyl roller shade is a cheaper one. To tell you the truth I never knew how to attach a shade pull until awhile ago when I Googled. But can a grommet be pounded through the thin vinyl without it tearing through? Didn't see any info on this.I guess it would be the same as making a vinyl shower curtain on the shower curtain would be heavier. Anyone make grommets?

I have a grommet tool that has made installing grommets a real cinch! I've put them in belts, purses, and more. You can get one for less than $15. I got mine at a fabric store and it came with multiple sizes of grommets. Google "grommet tool" and you should have no trouble finding one. Hope this helps!

I put in a shade pull on one window and I just poked a tiny hole very near the wood slat in the hem...I didn't want to see the hole and I think a grommet will emphasize it more...

I made my own pulls out of a thin ribbon and a large button...or I've crocheted in cotton thread over a metal ring....

You have a couple of choices. If you want to convert to grommets, you could look into the kit, though I have never done this, and suspect it might be a bit pricey. You CAN buy a header stiffener in the drapery section of Joann's or a similar store, and I would think you would definately want to use it. A couple of other options: You could buy clip on rings. There is a small clip on the bottom of the ring, which clips to the top of the panel. Then the ring goes over the rod. Probably want to clip a ring every 4 inches or so along the top of each panel. If you want to hang them on rings,but don't want the look of the clips, here is an easy solution. Go to Joann's or some place similar and buy rings which have little metal eyelet-screws at the bottom of them. Unscrew each little eyelet-screw from the ring, and you will stitch it onto the back of the drapery, by hand, probably every four inches or so. You will stitch around the eyelet part. The stem end will be sticking straight up. Where the stem meets the eyelet -that part should be right a the top border of the panel. When you have stitched them all on, simply screw the rings on to all the eyelets and then hang the rings from the rod.

I see. I find all your suggestions interesting, as well as one I saw on the sewing section suggesting eyelet tape. Thanks! The food was yogurt mixed with cherry concentrate, very very healing to both kidneys and pneumonia. The staff were very negligent in leaving him for a long time both in the A.C. cat-scan room, as well as the A.C. hallway afterward, without immediate transport. When I begged for a blanket, the giant took his blessed time producing yet another THIN quilt. My dad whispered to me that he was pulling up the "blanket" to cover his nose in an attempt to warm his body. These insane places are from the Dark Ages! So if you can believe this, I took the initiative, and got my dad's aide to grab one side while I grabbed the other, to wheel his heavy bed around the corner of the hallway where it was much warmer. Then to boot, when the tardy transport guy finally arrived, he put my dad thru an I.D. questionnaire to ensure it really was him. Cookoo! Sigh..by now he is back at the nursing home he was in previously, and at least there they have a personal fridge.These past years & months have been thoroughly draining. While I do appreciate the suggestions, I too had thought the cute pink bag would be too insulated & outside my budget, and I wouldn't have been able to lug even a tiny fridge to hospital, as I'm a weak shrimp & had plenty other stuff to lug there. Nobody know what brand of honey comb shades you are using. A six foot wide single shade, should NOT be an issue, with a cordless in Hunter Douglas. Nor should a motorized. A ring pull is similar, to a roller shade spring mechanism.The point of any and all shades is quality matters and none will be guaranteed past one year.

I suspect the fabric might not be suitable for a fusible interfacing if it is nylon because it will just melt. If you add interfacing, you are going to have to sew it in. The top hem should be opened up and the interfacing inserted. Or, depending on how your panel is finished at that top, you may be able to cut a piece of interfacing, and from the side, thread it through the top hemmed casing by attaching something like a very large safety pin and threading it in much like you would insert elastic in a casing. If there is no opening to be had at the side of the top hem, you can always make one that you can just fix with a bit of stitching, or even a small bit of adhesive after you have threaded the interfacing through it. If your panel is very wide, it might not be practical to try to pull a length of interfacing through the entire length at once. You could always made some slits in the back to give you several points of entry if you have to work with shorter lengths of interfacing. These slits could be stitched or held with a bit of fabric adhesive. They will never show. The only real problem might be if you ever have the dry cleaned that bit of adhesive might be a factor. Otherwise, no one will know. And, if you can, I think that it would still benefit from a line of stitching across the width of the panel to hold that in place and make it play well with the panel fabric. I guess you could also just sew a strip of interfacing on the backside of the hemmed top edge of the panel. Make two lines of stitching, one across the top and one across the bottom of the strip. If you make a careful choice of thread color you might not notice it muc With interfacing, you will have three layers of material to cinch in the ring of the grommet. Is that going to work for you? If you think it will, I suggest that you sew around your marked circle before you cut the circle out from the fabric to prepare it for the grommet. At least baste those three layers together just within the line of cutting before you cut. This might be of help to do also since you say that it is a loose weave. I would not go too heavy for the interfacing because the curtain has to be able to be flexible and not push back on itself. If the interfacing is too heavy the curtain may have a tendency to bounce back when you try to open it and stack it. It just needs to carry weight and give stability to the open weave and give a good base for that grommet to clamp on to.

Annie, what material is your shade? This one I'm using is a thin vinyl. I got the grommet idea by Googling "how to attach a shade pull" and a Martha Steward website showed the use of small grommets. Makes sense when you say the grommet would emphasize the hole. I'm worried that if I merely make a hole in the vinyl and thread cord through that, the material will eventually tear when I pull down on the shade pull. Maybe not? Perhaps the hole being "very near the slat" helps to prevent that tho. This shade has a plastic slat.

I think I'll practice on a piece of the shade that I removed when I was cutting it to fit. Thanks for the input.

Spent this afternoon working on this idea of a shade pull. I went to JoAnns for ideas, cord for the pull, something to reinforce the hole. Just putting a hole through the vinyl near the edge of the hem with the slat did not work. Tried white duct tape on the reverse side of the hole before punching, didn't like the way the shadow of the duct tape shown through for one, plus it may work if two pieces were used - one on the back, one on the front. But I thought it looked tacky. What about the glue gun? If I were to smear a small circle of hot glue around the hole, that should help resist tearing shouldn't it? or too messy?

I couldn't find the type of cord I was looking for either. Chose some thin white cord used in upholstery and then the fabric cutter at JoAnns brought me some regular cord used for sewing Roman shades, in red. Both frayed really badly when I tried to thread the ends through the hole and through the pull. I think what I need is more like heavy string?

If I replace the plastic slat with a thin piece of wood, could I then push a sharp tack through it and secure it on the backside somehow? I'm thinking along the lines of those buttons or pins that come in two pieces, one is pushed on the back to hold it.

Maybe a tiny grommet is the way the go afterall. I put everything away until I come up with something.
