Westminster Dog Show

It's feast or famine time I think...The Westminster Dog Show is on Monday and Tuesday this coming week, plus the Olympics... so much to watch all at the same time. I will not complain because most of what's on TV is so bad.

i ALWAYS watch the westminster, plan on attending it in a few yrs. i watch most dog shows on TV w/ my dog sandy. she loves to see the dogs and goes up to the tv to check if they are coming out the sides lol. she loves the puppy bowl w/ the kitty half-time show lol, we rewatch that over and over :-) i think it keeps her brain stimulated...

i am boycotting the olympics, still very bitter over the 2016 vote for brazil (my hometown is chicago). i will not get over that and i used to actually stay up all hours even during the work week to see events broadcast. atleast that means i will spend less time in front of the tv in the evening lol ~ liz

I like to watch the dog shows and see all the interesting breeds, but I'm not sure I saw "Uno" this time around? My friend and SIL have beagles, and honestly, I'd never get one. My friends howls ALL THE TIME!! It ridiculous! My SIL's doesn't howl as much, but is stubborn with a capital S! She is good around her kids, but attacked a dog in their neighborhood. This may not be a Beagle trait, and just their dogs, but they aren't my favorite!!! I've seen too much to want one!

Anyone who missed the first night ---- a repeat is on tomorrow morning on USA. And the finale is tomorrow night. Socks, the Westies are terriers, and that group is shown on Tuesday night. We have a friend who has been named top breeder and top trainer, and she'll be honored, and we know a couple of the dogs and handlers in the show, too. Our breed, the Golden Retriever, will show tomorrow in the sporting group. If anyone is interested in the individual bred judging, it's shown online, just google Westminster Kennel Club.

We have 2 Shelties and the smaller one gets very involved with the TV. She loves Dancing with the Stars, but really any show where there's a commotion, loud music, or another animal gets her attention. Our TV is in a large entertainment center with cabinet doors below. She is convinced that what she sees on TV is behind those doors. Our other Sheltie doesn't have a clue about what is going on. Whenever his sister jumps or barks at the TV, he runs to the window and starts barking.

I hate Westminster. I hate all the professional handlers, instead of the dogs being owner-handled. I hate all the careful stacking, instead of just allowing the dog to stack himself - all that kneeling to hold that stack in place. I hate all the product allowed on these dogs - it's truly the "hairdressers art". My own breed club does not allow professional handlers for our championship shows. We show our own dogs or we may ask a Club member to show one for us if we're physically not able to do so. At Crufts in the UK, the Kennel Club has banned product and sends inspectors around to clip a bit of hair to see if there is powder/mousse/gel or hairspray on the dog. Yes, the poodle's top knots flop quite a bit, but they actually look like dogs. They also do not allow surgically changing ears/tails etc. A boxer looks VERY different with droopy ears - sort of comical instead of a bit threatening. Benched shows (both Westminster and Crufts) are very hard on both the dogs and their owners/handlers. Yes, it does allow the public to "meet the breeds" but at what cost to the dogs? Yes, two people from my non-AKC breed club DID show their dogs at Westminster. In fact, one won the Breed. I was sorry that she chose to use a professional handler for the Toy Class competition - I'm sure she had her reasons, but she shows a dog beautifully herself. Thank heavens, the professional handlers have finally gotten the message that we don't kneel when we are dogs are being looked at, we allow them to self-stack, and we're not supposed to trim the dogs. Yes, trimming still happens (it happens at our own Club shows as well, but should not), but there is less than there once was and judges are no longer telling the handler she should really "neaten up" those fluffy feet!

I love the dog show! A few years ago when the writers were all on strike, the Dog shows got a huge amount of viewers.

The shows are fun.

I've lost all respect for the AKC. They continue to issue papers to puppy mill dogs without any checking. Guess the fees are most important to them.

A good friend of ours is at the Westminster Dog Show. Not to show a dog, though! He's a fantastic photographer and painter, and he was invited to be there as an official portrait artist for the dogs.

One year a pekingese won best in show....can't see that happening again anytime soon.
Love watching the show but really all the dogs there are the top of their breed, I think it just comes down to the judges preference.
Caesar doesn't even look like the pekingese they show. Too big at 21 pounds, nose brown instead of black, no luxurious coat, legs too long, but the sweetest boy dog ever.

Looks like it starts at 5 pm our time. I love seeing how well trained the dogs are, and all the different shapes and sizes.

Last year the Scottie won Best In Show, even at ten years old. He's back competing again this uear. I'd love back-to-back wins!

last yr's, 2009, winner was stump, the sussex spaniel. the scottie won his group last yr but not the overall competition. he is a fav this yr thou and did win the euk show 2010. ~ liz

Linda, I missed the Euk show! A good friend won the major ACE award with her Golden Retriever police dog named Robin! Did you see that segment? I wonder if I can find it online?
