When's the Westminster Dog Show Televised?

I want to see why judges denied Whiskey his triple crown while selecting Bourbon, his sister, for her first win. Nice to know they live with the same couple in their 'off hours'.

I hate Westminster. I hate all the professional handlers, instead of the dogs being owner-handled. I hate all the careful stacking, instead of just allowing the dog to stack himself - all that kneeling to hold that stack in place.

I hate all the product allowed on these dogs - it's truly the "hairdressers art". My own breed club does not allow professional handlers for our championship shows. We show our own dogs or we may ask a Club member to show one for us if we're physically not able to do so.

At Crufts in the UK, the Kennel Club has banned product and sends inspectors around to clip a bit of hair to see if there is powder/mousse/gel or hairspray on the dog. Yes, the poodle's top knots flop quite a bit, but they actually look like dogs. They also do not allow surgically changing ears/tails etc. A boxer looks VERY different with droopy ears - sort of comical instead of a bit threatening.

Benched shows (both Westminster and Crufts) are very hard on both the dogs and their owners/handlers. Yes, it does allow the public to "meet the breeds" but at what cost to the dogs?

Yes, two people from my non-AKC breed club DID show their dogs at Westminster. In fact, one won the Breed. I was sorry that she chose to use a professional handler for the Toy Class competition - I'm sure she had her reasons, but she shows a dog beautifully herself. Thank heavens, the professional handlers have finally gotten the message that we don't kneel when we are dogs are being looked at, we allow them to self-stack, and we're not supposed to trim the dogs. Yes, trimming still happens (it happens at our own Club shows as well, but should not), but there is less than there once was and judges are no longer telling the handler she should really "neaten up" those fluffy feet!

First night was last night so while they may still be talking about it you will probably not find anything anywhere saying exactly why. Judges will seldom say anything other than a particular dog or bitch was "on" at that time.

??maybe he was trying to not encourage "bad" behaior? or, maybe not all handlers are animal people! i have no idea. it is so hard to not cuddle even when misbehaving (or just being ornery). for instance, there is romeo. though not a dog...anyway, often i will walk past him as he is sprawled out on the floor, and he lazily takes a swipe at the back of my leg as i go by...hey! where do you think your going? it is really hard to not turn around and respond, whether just verbally, or even just getting me to stop, or i like to grab his belly when he does that. all that encourages him to keep doing it. anyway, back to dog shows. my i am chatty lately. you know animal planet. crufts should be on again!

It's a really cool broadcast to have on. No need to watch constantly, so it allows for plenty of family conversation... when they show the ridiculous poodles, good time for a bathroom break (especially if I feel like throwing up)... and a great excuse to stay up late. The poodles, I have known a few over time, and I think they're perfectly fine dogs - it's just the haircut that makes me gag. The puli's hair was much more fun to watch. My favorite was the Scottish deer hound. So elegant. So large. So beautifully grey. *sigh* But the little spaniel guy was very cute. I'm glad he won. :) Mary

Westminster is a two-day show, and only half the breed groups will be on display each day. SO if you are very interested in watching Poodles, for example, know that they will only be there one day. On the attached link, look for show information, then the menu (top left) that says 2014 dog show, and click on "Judging Program" to see when each breed will show. Most people watch their favorite breeds being judged and then spend the rest of time visiting the dogs on the benches where they will be all that day. There will be a lot of walking around. Have been to many dogs shows and even exhibited at benched shows here, but never Westminster. I'd love to go! Here is a link that might be useful: Westminster Kennel Club

Thank you so much. That was such fun. I love, love, love Irish Setters. Had two of them in my younger years. They are really fun dogs but very energetic. Too old to have one now and you don't see them around much. My heart just melts when I see one. I have a silly Goldendoodle now. She's fun too and the best part is she doesn't run away at any given opportunity. The Irish Setters would knock you down if they smelled fresh air and to catch them was near impossible. I remember riding up and down the street in the car trying to wear the dog out so my son could catch her.

Loved that sweet dachshund. He should have won the whole deal. My dachshund, Wally, and I rooted for Burn.

Another question, why did the judge dismiss the Schipperke and handler? Was it because only so many could be in the final judging?

There are usually 7 in the finals. There was some technical reason why that dog/handler was eliminated. They were talking about it earlier in the show but I did not catch all of it.

I read there was a "distant working relationship" between the owner or handler, and the judge, so had to be disqualified.

Same article mentioned why terriers, specifically wire fox, do so well, having to do with all the traits that make them good at their "job" as working dogs also makes them perform well in dog shows, so they are almost pre-disposed to win. Or else, conversely, the rules favor them!

Yes, any relationship between judge, handler, owner (any combination) would mean that the dog can not be shown under that judge. In this case, Peter Green was one of the very top handlers in the country before he retired to judging. So if the owner or the handler had ever worked with him, they could not show to him. But that still means that the dog won his breed and won the group, which is an outstanding achievement that can't be taken away.

So when you are going to enter your dog in a show, and you look at the judges, you would still enter, even if a higher judge would have a conflict. Because, like all dog shows, you never expect to get to the next level (well, some people might have such egos, but even they get upset some times).
