I couldn't see the pictures at work, I had to wait to get home, then I couldn't decide whether to post here or on the other thread, LOL.

I'd try them, just for revenge, I've had so many tomatoes decimated by the darned things.

You are much more creative than I am, I just put them on a board and step on 'em, and try to make sure one of the kids are right there to get the splatter all over them!

I do like the last post on that other thread, though, about linking up the dishes of egg wash and panko and getting them to march through it and down a tiny ramp into the hot oil, it' gives me a visual hat just makes me giggle, for some reason.

I don't think I'd be that adventurous, but as a gardener I can appreciate the sentiment. Those little dickens can do a terrible amount of damage!

I've eaten fried grasshoppers from Oaxaca, and they are delicious, but they taste like the seasonings added - lime juice, salt, and chili. I would expect the caterpillars to taste somewhat like what they had been eating. The grasshoppers had a faint flavor of plant leaves, but not overwhelming. The fried grasshoppers are readily available in Los Angeles, due to the number of people from Oaxaca who bring them here. It's probably my favorite food from Oaxaca, since I do not like mole, especially Oaxacan mole. I love Oaxaca, but I think it has the worst food in Mexico because of the horrible all-pervading mole. Yucatan has the best food in Mexico, partly because there is a large Lebanese population there, but Mayan food is good also.

I think that caterpillars are considered delicacies in many places.

I've eaten those Oaxacan bugs too, and they're not bad if I don't think about it too much. I like escargot.

However, as for caterpillars, I'd rather relocate them to where I put snacks for the neighborhood birds.

OMG, when I say those nasty things on my tomato plants, I had to hide in the house while my husband seemed to delight in throwing those nasty things into the pond behind our house. LAST time for me; I'll get my tomatoes at the farmers market thank you so much!

Little off topic, but re Oaxacan grasshoppers (Chapulines) - please be aware that there is an ongoing issue with lead contamination in some chapulines imported from Oaxaca. I have attached a link to a California State Helath Department Warning posted on the Los Angeles County Public Health Department Website. Most relevant part: "Recent analysis of chapulines from Oaxaca, Mexico, showed that they may contain as much as 2,300 micrograms of lead per gram of product. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended that children under age 6 should consume on average no more than 6.0 micrograms of lead each day from all food sources. A young child eating one of these highly contaminated chapulines could ingest nearly 60 times his or her tolerable daily intake for lead. While some of the chapulines analyzed contained no detectable lead, consumers have no practical way of determining if the product is contaminated with lead. "

So keep eating nutritious insects, but be careful with the Chapulines!
