I am surprised that no one there mentioned this tip:

I use dehydrated water powder to sprinkle on top. It really intensifies the crispy-ness of the cubes.

I am sure others in this forum has many more secret tips to share.

Reminds me of my newly married, very domestically challenged cousin, many years ago. I was visiting and her husband went to get some ice from the freezer. He called out, "Jill, why didn't you fill up the ice cube trays before you put them back in the freezer?" She replied (in all seriousness), "But we didn't NEED ice cubes."

I rarely use recipes. When making ice cubes, I just wing it. They usually come out OK.

That recipe worked well for me although you must be sure each section is equally filled or some will be done before others. Also avoid overfilling, or you may end up with muffin top cubes.

A good friend of mine will be buying a new bar refrigerator and regular refrigerator soon and the quality of the ice cubes is driving their decision. They must be square, small and slightly hollow to make a "crispy" ice cube.

Does anyone have a recipe for ice chips? I've been wanting to try them.

They left out the most important part of the recipe - that you use filtered or bottled water - unless you live in British Columbia and get water from melted glaciers. Tap water will make cloudy ice cubes. The clearest ice cubes I've ever had were from tap water in Vancouver, before they started adding flouride to the water.

I also considered the quality of ice cubes before buying my refrigerator, and in Texas, ice cubes are especially important. The first thing I did when I got there last week was buy new ice trays so that we could have plenty of ice - ice was the single most important food group.

Thanks for the ice recipe link; I bought a bag of ice the other day at the supermarket and those ice cubes were horrible, I knew I should have made them from scratch.

Ice cube trays have been a pet peeve for me since becoming a "grown up". Grew up with a fridge that had a TEENY "freezer" that pretty much only held a few ice trays and maybe ice cream... on special occasions. NOBODY EVER put a tray back in that wasn't filled with water for more cubes. EVen if you only popped out 4-5 cubes, ya put the rest in a small tub and refilled the tray. I'll ALWAYS have an ice maker iin my freezer!

To disguise possible ice cube imperfections when entertaining, blend in a few drops of food coloring to match the hue of each beverage you'll be serving.

If serving Perrier, Evian or similar beverages, use Penzey's clear food coloring. It's not worth skimping by using the imitation Mexican clear coloring.

Lars, Vancouver does not add fluoride to their water. In fact, very few communities in British Columbia add fluoride.

Be very careful not to over process these....your instant read should read 0 when inserted near the center of the cube

donna.....my recipe for ice chips is really easy....put the cubes on the counter and whack them with a chisel and hammer. If you don't use the chisel, you will end up with shards which are not very appetizing and could cause brain freeze.

I sous vide water in a tray at 0 F for 48 hours.

The cubes have a much better mouth feel. Literally melt in your mouth.

Last night I tried marinating the cubes AFTER they were prepared. Amazing sensation! I especially like a marinade of gin with a splash of tonic. You might even consider adding a hint of lime.

Do they have a low fat version?

Yes, I can see how a few drops of clear food coloring might add some "je ne sais quoi."

And Mitch, I would definitely toss the cubes you left out over night. By this time they will be full of paramecium. Just be sure to toss them in the sink, not the garbage can.

Mmm, no, Cooper. I don't like the flavor of those weird foreign foods. I'll stick with good old Made in the USA ice cubes. No Mickey Mouse ears, either.
