Speaking of plastic containers and lids

I'm one of those people who reheat food in the plastic containers I froze it in. An elderly friend chastised me once saying this causes cancer, but that's not my question. Or should it be?

What do you do when you freeze a tomato based food item (especially) and then when you reheat that container in the microwave and then when you go to wash it afterwards and the plastic container has turned the color of tomato, sometimes it's actually etched into it (for lack of a better term)? Is this container safe to reuse? I tend to pitch them if it's especially gross. Is it the high heat that causes this? I don't notice other food items reacting to the plastic this way unless I just don't see it because it's not orange.
