Canning jar lids - plastic???
Comments (3)Yes, the plastic screw-on one piece covers are not airtight or leak proof. I also place one of the canning metal lids with the rubber seal under the plastic screw on cover. This helps to hold the metal lid in place should it get tipped over in the fridge. The plastic lids are only used AFTER a canning process to help in keeping the metal lid on and not having to deal with the metallic rings that tend to rust quickly. The white coating in the inside of the lid is a plasticized zinc oxide paint. Its inert as far as reacting to any acidic or corrosive action within a canning jar....See MoreCanning jars with glass lids and screw rings
Comments (1)Try the link below instead as your link doesn't work. First, if it is a gallon size (rather than a quart) it cannot be used for canning anything anyway. They are used just for dry storage. There are no provisions or guidelines or processing times for anything larger than quart jars. Second, if they are actually quart sized they aren't recommended for use in canning any longer, primarily because of the high rate of seal failures with them. Rather they are considered vintage/antique collectibles and used for decorative and dry storage purposes. They are sized so that modern canning lids will not fit them. Comments (4)The issue with old jars is with the threads on the neck. If the lid fits, it's useable. The MAJORITY of jars in my supply are second-hand. They're hand-me-downs, auction finds, and goodwill purchased. Mine get used for pressure canning as well as HWB. I have not had a jar break on me in decades, unless it's one I've dropped. I have never counted how many jars I have, but given I may put up three or four hundred bottles of produce, you can imagine. I buy new ones only when I run out of a particular size. Just check them first, as you did and clean them well....See MoreWhat are you paying for NEW jars Now?
Comments (37)I had the strangest thing happen yesterday. I had the whole spiel typed out to tell you all and got booted so just dropped the thing. I went into Walmart to buy a roll of masking tape to use on my marking tables today at the Farmer"s Market. Thought I'd cruise down the canning isle and see if they had restocked lids. I didn't need any but just wanted to check. To my surprise all the canning supplies were marked down with those big red and black stickers they use. Quart and pint Ball jars were $5. Wide mouth and reg. were the same. Lids were $1. reg. and $1.50 wide mouth. The platinum wide mouth jars were $2.50 for the four pack. Ball salt $1. I bought 20 doz. of each size lid and 6 doz. of reg quarts and pints. The new freezer jam packs were $2. I bought 6 pks. I did leave a lot there but spent over $100. I got home thinking what a bargain. Very seldom do canning supplies go on sale here. This is a farming community. When I got home I realized I forgot the masking tape. So, after dinner I went back [it's just around the corner] and picked up the tape and went to check the canning isle and everything was back to the original price. Evidently someone marked things down in error. The blue enamel canner with rack was still $13. though....See More- 15 years ago
