An old classic movie

I was channel surfing last nite and came across an old movie that was already in progress.
I was taken with how gorgeous the actress was and I watched it.

It was very good. Having no idea who the actors were, I watched the credits.

Lana Turner and John Gavin. Wow what a knockout she was! And he was/is a hunk too. He reminded of of Elvis in some ways.

I just googled it and it was Imitation of Life, from 1959. The movie was in colour and I had no idea how old it was.

Watched a remake of "It Happened One Night" with Claudet Colbert and Clark Gable. It was just two days ago and already I forget the name of the remake. It starred Jack Lemon and June Allison. It held pretty much to the story line, but it's hard to beat Clark Gable and Claudet Colbert. I would say its getting near time for a remake of the remake!! Also I remember being halfway though the remake of A Love Affair with Cary Grant and Jean Kerr...the Warren Beatty and Annette Benning movie....before I realized it was even the same movie!

Sue :) It keeps filtering into my mind at odd times, so I will probably have to see if I can rent it, or something. I can only remember a couple of bits and pieces. I have a hard time at theaters because of the volume, and can not sit close to the front. I think the last time I went to the theater was to see The Help with a group of friends. One is disabled, and had to sit at the back , and I was happy to keep her company. She keep trying to get me to go sit with the other ladies until I told her that I was sitting in the back by choice! She thought I was just sitting with her to be nice. Well, that too!

Playing with my camera one night, I took a picture of Uncle Charlie giving niece Charlie the ring in Shadow of a Doubt. I can't bring myself to delete this picture! diane_nj mentioned Key Largo. Some other great Edward G. Robinson movies: Double Indemnity (seductive Barbara Stanwyck practically sets the screen on fire), Scarlet Street, The Stranger. Paul Muni is excellent in Scarface & I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang. I can see why he was so respected in his day.

I loved it, too, but...

The original was better, IMHO, and it was "Pinky" (1934).

If you liked "Imitation of Life" (1959), you should watch "Pinky" (the original!).

I love old movies.

I like to look up movies/actors on IMDb - you can even download the app for your iPad. It is fun to see who was all in the movie and what other movies and TV they were in. I can also look up showtimes if I want to go to the movies - just love that site!!

Actually the original movie was Pinky, but the release date was 1949 and starred Jeanne Crain The book it was based on was titled "Quality".

Just checked Youtube and you can watch the complete movie wih Lana Turner. She was a beautiful actress.

"Imitation of Life" is one of my all time favorites. I always look on the Dinner & A Movie list in my TV guide to see when it might be coming on, so I can see it again. It is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, on TCM at 10:30 p.m. I know that the Guide isn't always fool proof, but I hope it is right. In the list it says "Imitation of Life" 1934. Doesn't mention Pinky, and I have never heard of Pinky, but I hope it will be on here and that it is the one I remember, but I will watch whatever it is.

"Having studied the 1959 version of "Imitation of Life" in film class, it has become one of my favorite films, one that is rich with many subtexts that may not be visible upon first glance. This special 2-disc DVD set contains both the 1934 and 1959 versions based on a Fannie Hurst tear-jerker novel.

"Tackling a sensitive issue for the times (in both versions), these movies deal with an African-American girl who wants to pass for white to have more opportunities open up for her. The girl's mother develops a friendship and working/subserviant relationship with a white woman who has her own daughter of the same age. How the two women function in their environments and the conflicts that occur due to the daughter's "passing" constitute the basis of both stories."

Same story, different title and different times.

I loved Claudette Colbert in the original. I was fascinated with the layout of the two-family house in the second movie.
