Herbs for Headaches
Comments (30)Migraines are easier to avoid than to treat after the fact. Until I understood what my triggers are I had them many times a year. My triggers are missing breakfast, pork (I can eat a bit of bacon), red wine (DH's home brew is OK), undue stress (learn to let go or meditate), lack of caffeine in the am, dehydration, certain smells such as diesel fumes and perfumes (I can use essential oils). I like coffee so always have a couple of cups in the am. I have also found that green tea works but I like coffee better. I'm sure other's triggers will be different but if they can be identified and avoided it certainly is easier than trying to live with migraines. I found a simple solution which works almost all the time. At the first sign of a headache, which for me is an aura, sip a glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon soda bicarb added. Repeat if ineffective. Avoided hours of pain for me once I discovered this. I seldom get an aura altho will get one when I can't avoid diesel or heavy perfume on someone else....See Morefeeling sick (whine)
Comments (7)I'm so glad you are feeling better! Just so you know, the 'bug' is just about cross country right now - seems a little late in the season to me. I just wanted to share an email I got from my nephews wife yesterday. Nephew has full custody of two small children and married a wonderful young woman with a daughter same age as his, so she cares for three kids, works enough hours to maintain an employee merchandise discount and 401K, has her own small business in their home... Dear M: Wednesday Shxxn had the flu. Friday Kxxli had the flu. Sunday, Kxxie and I both had the flu. Today, Lxxn is in bed with the flu. The only live souls in the house who have not been sick are the cat and the dog! Love You, L....See MoreMigraine relief?
Comments (19)Thank you all, fellow sufferers, for your well wishes, good advice, and comaraderie. I am better today though I was awakened by stabbing pains in my trapezius muscles. Residue from the headache and associated tension, I'm sure. I still have that haunted, drained post-migraine look about my eyes. Ugh. Yesterday the headache moved on and I was able to think and function better. The previous two days are a blur. I know I had several triggers this time around. I let myself get dehydrated, I'm stressed, I was premenstrual and I'm perimenopausal (as well as the oldest living menstruating woman on the planet). I never had migraines until I was in my 40s and during a particularly awful period in my marriage and work life I suffered from both cluster headaches and migraines, often together or in the same week. Imitrex saved my life back then but since the end of my marriage I have been nearly migraine free. I guess I need to pay more attention to avoiding triggers. I'd rather not have to go back on Imitrex again. As Lpink mentions, it is quite expensive and I do not have prescription coverage. I missed the signs that this was a migraine coming on. I had joint and muscle pain for a couple of days before for reasons that mystify me. Could barely move. (I seem to have some fibromyalgia symptoms from time to time where my shoulders, hips, knees, and elbows hurt.) Then the headache. I rarely get the aural stuff or if I do, it is slight. I do get nauseous and light sensitive. Water, check. I loaded up on fluids as soon as I realized I was getting a headache and was also awfully thirsty. Caffeine, check. I doubled up on my morning brew yesterday. I'm a one cupper so I had two. Massage, check. My son rubbed my shoulders, it was wonderful while he did it! Nap, check. No MSG, I don't recall anything that might have had MSG but I tend to avoid it anyway. It makes me feel strange. No red wine, I'm a white wine drinker as a rule but I'll keep this in mind. Tiger Balm, I'll be visiting the Asian market soon. Hot pack, check. I wrapped my neck in one of those things you heat in the microwave. Heat helps me. It relaxes the tension a bit. I did some self hand massage, which I find helps. Thanks for the links, Lpink. I swear by acupuncture for some other problems I've had, I'll give it try for this. The problem is that when I am in the midst of a migraine, driving to a clinic and sitting in a waiting room is the last thing I want to do. Alexa, tell your DH you needs LOTS of massaging and TLC. Terri, I'm interested in the tea you used. What was it?...See MoreEstrogen that doesn't cause headaches?
Comments (3)Hi Kristy, Some of us have hormonal headaches that we just can't get rid of, even after trying different types and amounts of estrogen. I am wondering what drugs you use for your headaches. I got in a bad situation using Fioricet too often, and it made my headaches worse ("rebound headaches") and sometimes other pain meds have the same tendency, if used more than 2-3 days a week. Have you been worked up by a neuro doc who specializes in headache management? That might be a good thing to do. I am in perimenopause and have been on premarin in the past, which, in retrospect, caused alot of my headaches. I am presently on combi-patch, but I still get headaches for about 10 days around my period (or even when I'm due for a period, but don't get one). I take Exedrine Free and when that doesn't work, I use Maxalt. There is a good headache forum at Braintalk.org. There are several women there who have really bad hormonal headaches who have tried tons of medications. They might be good people to ask. I haven't tried many different meds or hormones. It's a great site and you might get some good ideas there. Some of us there have found that during about 2 weeks around our periods, lots of things become "triggers" for our headaches, and we have learned to avoid them around that time. I have a friend who has migraines and she thought they would go away after her hysterectomy, but they didn't. My neuro doc said that this is often the case......That there are so many other things involved (like your pituitary and hypothalamus), that just by removing your ovaries and uterus many times doesn't stop hormone-related headaches. I hope you find something that helps....See Morelpinkmountain
