Are we still watching Africam?

I lost track of Africam for awhile, but recently rediscovered it. My favorite time to watch is after 11:00 p.m. EST. With seven hours difference, it's early morning there--a good time to see lots of animals. But even without animal sightings, I love the sounds of Africa, daytime and nighttime, and often keep one of these on in the background.

I'll bet quite a few of us are still watching, yes?

I'm an avid follower. Until very recently (the last couple of days) there seemed to be few or no animals at either of those water holes, I THINK because of some flooding that occurred in the region after a week of torrential rain.

But the herds seem to be back now, in both locations.

I usually check in around 10:00 PM (CT) or earlier. It's fun to watch the animals appear out of no where at dawn (Africam time).

I'll also watch when it's full nighttime there and have been privy to some thrilling moments...a lion kill in December, leopards coming for a drink, and all of the other predatory animals that lurk in the dark.

Whenever I see those darned African buffalo swarming the water holes at night, my heart rate picks up....I can just feel those watchful eyes on them.

My parakeets even love it when no animals are there - they "talk" with all the birds...lol

Well, let's hope Father Verizon, with the red hat and fur, treats you well this year! Do you have cable in your area that sells high-speed internet? I don't have DSL either - but 1/2 mile away in all directions they have it, so I got cable. My cable company claim 4MB download speed and I'm getting 3.86 consistently. Upload they claim 356 kbps and I do get that. You can check your true, vice claimed, connection speed on a website called Speakeasy.com My cable company is upgrading to 6MB in January. DSL claims 1.5MB so you might want to get a cable modem. They are faster, but it costs more. Worth it IMHO. My sister, who lives on a very rural horse farm, but is near Chapel Hill, NC has DSL on the farm (go figure). She also watches the Africam (and is hooked) on DSL and she gets freezing here and there, but not enough to make her not want to watch. Lately I've not gotten any freezing at all, but on the rare occasion when the site is extremely busy. CT

This is from today's blog: I have been given permission by the Minnesota DNR to recover the remaining egg when I feel it is the right time. They feel that anything a week or 10 days beyond the expected hatching date means it is not going to hatch. One piece of information that I did not know before is that even the DNR has to have a permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service to take a loon egg from the wild! It is serious stuff. And I am glad to see that everyone takes it so seriously. So we have now gotten through all the red tape and legalities and I have permission to take the egg whenever I feel it is appropriate. So here is my question for you.... I have pretty much decided that I want to take it at night to minimize the stress on the loons and to keep from imprinting on them that I am a threat. Also, since the sun does not even set here until 9pm and we have that wonderful twilight until after 10pm, my thinking is that I will take the egg somewhere around 11pm similar to the times when I had to go out and restore the camera. And with the new night vision camera this year, you will be able to observe the whole thing even though it is pitch dark! But my question for you is which do you prefer, Monday or Tuesday night? I want to give people as much notice as possible and also allow people who are traveling over the weekend to be able to see it. Also, I want to do it relatively soon to be able to free the loons from their being tied to the nest. So I lean toward doing it Monday night at 11pm but I am also open to Tuesday night if everyone thinks that is better. Let me know what you think. Someone may even want to start a separate subject with that question so that everyone sees it. By doing it on either one of those nights, we have gone almost 2 weeks beyond the expected hatching date and should have removed any doubt in anyone's mind that the remaining egg MIGHT have hatched if we had just waited another day. Now it is time to learn as much as we can from this year's experience. And to let the loons get on with their lives and to be able to enjoy the rest of the summer in the element that they were created to be in. Not tied to a nest. So let me know what you think. But we WILL do it either Monday night or Tuesday night at 11pm. And let some of your family and friends and others know about it when we set the night to do it. It may be a once in a lifetime thing to watch. At least I HOPE it is once in a lifetime. I don't want to have to do it again in MY lifetime! And I hope future years we are talking about how cute the chicks are and not about when to take the unhatched egg off the nest! After the egg is off the nest, I would expect that the loons would return to the nest but fairly soon leave when there is nothing to keep them there. I will plan on leaving the camera running for at least a few days after we take the egg so that you may be able to catch of glimpse of them now and then. AND that we can learn from their behavior and see exactly how they will deal with the egg being taken. Yet one more opportunity to learn about our amazing loons!

I've worn a watch since I was grown up: don't remember the circumstances when I got my first one. En route home on furlough from my mission in Korea in 1957, I attended a conference near Geneva, Switzerland and came to know a young woman who worked in the World Council of Churches office there. She'd worked with a manufacturer of watches earlier and took me there to buy one. The name was "Jeanrichard" and as father's name was "Richard" and stepmother's "Jean" I was pleased. Dad didn't want the second that I bought: he, who always wore a watch, had one that pleased him ... but my youngest brother, also named "Richard" did, so he was pleased with it. A feature that they offered was that they needed no winding or batteries: there was a lever inside that wound their spring as one moved one's hands. I guess there was adequate storage, as they never lost time while one slept ... don't know if we ever let one sit still for an extended period to find out how long they kept the time. Don't recall how long it lasted: several years. I've had several since, usually Timex, and it's hard to find local watch repair places, to get the batteries replaced. My second last, the watch guy told me when it stopped not to replace the battery, as the insides were plastic and so badly worn that they weren't worth the cost of a battery. Daughter recently sent me her second gift of an Indiglo Timex, that lights up with the push of the crown to show the time in the dark ... and this frugal fella shed a couple of tears when viewing the postage fee of $U.S. 15.50 (about Cdn$20.00). ole joyful

I too sort of liked Virgin River. Formulaic but not too bad, at least the woman doctor isn't insipid. I have watched the Kominsky Method both season twice. There is a poignancy there that speaks to me. Watched "Gentification" this weekend and loved it. It's more than half in Spanish with subtitles but takes place in the US/Los Angeles Boyle neighborhood. That didn't bother me. I found its message about struggling as an artist/creator and trying to keep neighborhood traditions alive in changing economic times very relatable even for me in a small midwestern town. A tad stereotypical, but what TV isn't a tad stereotypical. Pick your poison. Bear in mind this is just my .02, but I loathe "Mrs. Maisel" let me count the ways. Sophomoric is one that comes to mind. Great eye candy but oh so Disneyfied do don't call it ground breaking. And as a Jew, I find it a terribly insulting lame self-parody, and that's being kind. No reflection on the talent in the show though. My grandkids turned me on to "Stranger Things." So far so good but I'm not very far into it. For sci fi fans mostly though. I gravitate towards escapist things with a strong dose of humor but I'm always down for a little genuine pathos, but not ones that make me gag at their pretensions.

I used to watch a lot but got out of the habit. I love seeing them real time..must start watching again.

I like them too. It seems to me the Tembe cam has more and different animals. I posted a week or so ago about lions being at Tembe at night. They hung around til well past daylight.

They are awesome sites for sure.

night at the Tembe site...so fun to watch!

Did anyone watch Pot Plant Owl and Pappa raise their chicks? There was a camera set up on a porch in South Africa- I watched that more than the other places. Those little owls were so precious.

The rains someone else mentioned, shut most of the webcams done for several weeks. I haven't been to any of them today, but I think they were all finally up yesterday. Amazing to see the damage the rain caused. It can be addictive watching these cam's.

I'm hoping PPO will lay more eggs in that pot this year so there will be more babies to watch. The camera is down now but this will get you to the siet where you can read about them and see pictures.
Type in Pot Plant Owl and go to the Africam site. Underneath the heading click on 'More on PPO' That takes you to the links, blog, Facebook, etc.
I feel like a godmother to them.

Understand, the owls are not in the nest any longer. PPO and Papa are still teaching them the ways of the world as they fly around. The blog will keep you up to date about the sightings. I dearly love those owls and wish them a long happy life.
