Drywalling over vinyl wallboard
Comments (5)Thank you so much, Nod. But why did you need 1/4" sheet rock? They quoted me 3/8 or 1/2. They said the 1/2" would even be cheaper and substantiate the walls. We are going to do the Kitchen the way you said you did by removing the strips and filling with joint compound. How do you countersink the staples? With a hammer? We didn't want to tear down the kitchen cabinets and we were thining to wallpaper (which I hate). Did you actually just prime and paint over? How does it look? They want to reuse the trim but it is so cheap looking. Maybe I should put some real wood trim up too. My house is a modular double wide on a foundation with full basement and 2 car garage so it won't be moved. If you can tell me the names of any products I should use to mud, prime and paint I would greatly appreciate it....See Morewallpaper over vinyl wallboard
Comments (6)I had vinyl wallpaper on wallboard (the kind that it comes with from the factory) in my kitchen. I peeled it off, used Kilz to prime it and then painted it with latex paint. I took off the strips that cover the seams and did some taping and mudding too. Came out pretty nice. I also did a little test area where I just used the kilz over the vinyl wallpaper and it worked.. however I've seen pictures of some where it peels off after awhile. The Kilz leaves a good surface for you paint to stick to. My vinyl wallpaper was very easy to peel off.. like contact paper....See MorePainting over the vinyl drywall
Comments (4)I had my entire interior painted, of which I did my bathrooms & kitchen myself. The BEST primer IMHO is at Home Depot and is called GRIPPER! No need to rough up any vinyl or formica surfaces (even metal)..just paint it on smoothly and just a medium light coat. I always let it dry for a good 3 days to assure it's hardened. Then you can apply any latex paint. Our home had the 'standard' formica dressers, nightstands. I used the Gripper primer, then painted them a satin soft white-honestly they look like wood! I swear by this primer! The contractor who refaced my kitchen cabinets told me for any moldings (they are all that plastic type)..to use a rustoleum paint as it is harder & won't chip if anything bangs into them. I did mine 8 yrs ago & they still look great. Again-I primed them w/Gripper first-thin coat....See Morepainting on vinyl walls
Comments (81)I know this is about 5 years later but... I painted my 'wallpaper board with batten stripped walls' in my mobile home. I started in the kitchen and I tried removing one of the strips and patching/sanding it in one spot. You can't really tell from a distance. We then just painted over all the strips. I tried to remove the 'wallpaper' in the bathroom because it had some significant damage (door knob thru the wall, removed towel bars and artwork from over the years). So I pulled it off and was left with various depths of torn apart cardboard like material to work with. I puttied the holes and deep gouges with whatever drywall putty I had on hand, and sanded to blend. I then used a product called 'wall paper liner'. I was going to do two coverings with it but took the lazy route. I saved myself some work by doing faux ship lap high up on the walls (and it was a bathroom so I could). With the wallpaper liner up you couldn't really see the damage (the white hid everything). I painted it what I thought was a light blue at the time, but it made the damaged spots more noticeable. I ended up making the blue paint very light which helped. But you can see in the photos you can see the worst of the bad spot. I made the bathroom 'busy' so I think for a casual bathroom user their eye doesn't notice it. And hell, old houses (not that this house is THAT old) have funky walls. It was better, and cheaper, than paying someone to gut the bathroom and hang new dry wall. BTW I didn't use any special paint. Just Valspar (I think the kitchen was painted like 4 years ago before paint+primer was a thing, so I did prime it with a primer... but I didn't use Kilz or anything and it has stayed on, and you can't see the wallpaper pattern thru it). In this photo: where I removed the batten and attempted to patch it and painted it. Up top we painted over the battens left in place, and I really feel like if we had any sort of 'decor' up there you wouldn't even notice it. The bathroom - the worst spot where you can see where pulling off the wallpaper really damaged the wall, I did my best to putty/sand it before using the wallpaper liner product. But I feel like the rest of the bathroom turned out fine. I did it by myself....See Morejiggreen
