Drywalling over vinyl wallboard

Has anyone here ever drywalled right over the vinyl wallboard. I had a professional come in and they said it would be a lot easier and cheaper to drywall over and make adjustments for door jams, windows, trim, etc.

Has anyone ever done this? Is this professional just trying to take a shortcut that is going to look bad? I just can't stand those wall and batten strips any longer.

Yes, it can be done. We did two double wides that way. We had to special order 1/4 inch thick sheet rock to do it. Another way we have done it is to remove the strips, counter sink the staples, fill the cracks with joint compound, (we used quick setting joint compound) sand and use a good primer and good interior paint. You could never tell the strips were there. We also replaced the window and door trim with regular trim. Just remember if the home ever has to be moved, the seams will crack. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much, Nod. But why did you need 1/4" sheet rock? They quoted me 3/8 or 1/2. They said the 1/2" would even be cheaper and substantiate the walls.

We are going to do the Kitchen the way you said you did by removing the strips and filling with joint compound. How do you countersink the staples? With a hammer? We didn't want to tear down the kitchen cabinets and we were thining to wallpaper (which I hate). Did you actually just prime and paint over? How does it look? They want to reuse the trim but it is so cheap looking. Maybe I should put some real wood trim up too.

My house is a modular double wide on a foundation with full basement and 2 car garage so it won't be moved.

If you can tell me the names of any products I should use to mud, prime and paint I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi brennajones1! Thanks for bringing this thread back! I'm actually prepping/priming my eat-in kitchen TODAY! Paint will go on Tuesday, after the primer cures. A second coat, if necessary, will go on Thursday, as well as any touch-ups. Saturday morning we'll put up the new curtains, and pictures on our accent wall. At 1:00 PM Saturday, my daughter Joy and I are hosting about a dozen women for a garden party! FUN!! We've decided to paint one room a month until the entire interior is done, even though at least some, if not all, the interior walls will be replaced some day. Originally, we had decided not to put any $$ into updates before remodeling. But our complete, subfloor to ceiling do-over is literally a ten year plan. So we've decided to put a few hundred dollars into paint in order for freshen things up. By the way, Iast January I bought an old, 1979 MH in dreadful condition due to neglect and the previous owners being hoarders. I have the dark, fake wood paneling throughout. In three rooms, they decided to paint, then quit part way through. No priming, no tape, no tarps, so lots of paint on carpets, etc. All hideous, super dark colors. And wherever their brushes were when they got tired of it is where they quit. Not in a straight line or anything, lol! Unfortunately, I don't have an answer to your question. You can do a search here because there are dozens of threads devoted to painting MH walls! And maybe try it in a small area where it wouldn't be noticeable. Good luck! That sounds like alot of work. Plus if there are kids in the house, you'll likely have more holes and eventually run out of closet panels. I'd just get all rough edges out the holes, then put some dry wall tape over them and then use dry wall mud, then sand smooth. I don't know what to tell you about the bubbles. I have some places like around some of my windows were I think they maybe just tightened the screws too much and it casued the covering the wrinkle up. I just planned on painting over it since it will covered by curtains anyways. good luck.

Best way to use Gardz(vinyl wallpaper glue left on RAW drywall)!!

I just used Gardz last night to start the repair process in the bathroom I just painstakingly stripped wallpaper off unprepared dryway (what a nightmare - I am still cursing whoever did this!). I sanded it down pretty well, but there were still little chunks of glue that I could not get off. Anyway, the gardz cost $30 a gallon, and my local store did not carry it in quarts. I used very little as it is quite thin. It did an amazing job of "sealing" that drywall and I feel alot better about moving forward with this! Some of that pesky glue actually loosened while I was applying the gardz and I scrapped it off as I went. This morning, I have a fairly smooth (well, excepted where the drywall is torn and we have to skim coat) wall and it feels like a nice consistent surface sealed from any residual glue etc. The can says to sand, apply gardz, do the skim coat, sand and then reapply gardz. I was going to use a normal white tint primer for the second application - over the skimcoat as i think that is the advice I read on this forum. Do I need to apply the gardz over the skimcoat like the can says? thanks for the recommendations, this seems to be a great product!

I would get a different contractor. Drywall work is done first and then the flooring is installed. The proof of this is the picture you just posted. When you hire a contractor make sure he is licensed and registered: they have insurance, bonding , criminal record checks and continuing education. This varies state to state. Licensing involves passing exams and meeting certain criteria to prove reasonable competency in a trade. Make sure you get plenty of reviews of any contractors work before you hire them. Also interview several. Read the blogs in Houzz on hiring contractors, and read other articles too❣️

oh, I just ound this forum, and was going to ask this very question. I'm thinking about drywalling over my paneling, because the people here before me did a crappy paint job. From what I understand it's best not to paint over it, and sanding all the walls down to panel so I could repaint would be too much. I read somewhere that you shouldnt drywall over panels, but I don't know why. I've red of people doing it, and I think that's the way I'm heading, since it will give the walls some better insulation too.

The contracter i was working for specified the 1/4 inch sheetrock. 3/8 or 1/2 inch would also work. We just used a hammer and a nail set (punch) to counter sink the staples.That way you can fill the dimple with compound which will hide the stapels. The primer we used was Kilz, don't remember the paint, but i think he got the paint from Sherman Williams. Using real wood trim, although a little expensive, it makes a world of difference in your homes appearance.
