Hi...thanks, everyone, for all your great comments on my previous threads. Thought I'd post more.

Another reason not to have lots of different angles for a roof in Valdez. This one is supposed to be rated 250# per foot but I'd hate to take a chance!

Repost to explain...I showed hubby this pic & he said, "That's at the West tank farm!" He works for Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. (where tankers come in to load up w/oil). I wondered why the guy in this pic was wearing the ropes. He's on top of one of the tanks. There are 4 tanks in the West tank farm & 14 in the East tank farm. Each tank holds half a million barrels...63 feet high & diameter of 250 feet.

Love this one! It's taken from across the city of Valdez across the bay.

Basketball team pushing bus in Valdez, Alaska. Notice them wearing short pants? It's real common here in all kinds on inclement weather. Even though we get lots of rain in the summer (even more than Seattle) you will not find one umbrella in the hands of a local. If you do see one, it's a tourist :)

I think it's time to shovel that roof?

Not sure where this was taken...it was on someone who is from Valdez FB page so didn't want to assume. Anyway...thought it was funny! LOL

Mind-boggling. Thanks for posting because it's fun looking in from the other side. :) Is that guy using an ELECTRIC iron to melt snow into WATER?????

Do folks have propane tanks there? Last year several exploded in Tahoe due to the snow low. I can't imagine having to dig one out of that!

And can you please send it south. The mountains here are good for hiking but not skiing!

Alison, I'm checking that ebony flower every day so I don't miss the seeds. Funny, it's the only ebony one. How come only one flower on it though? Any ideas how to get more than one flower after I get the seeds from this one? I love the painted tongue too. Trying to get the seeds from those too. I want lots of them next year. I love gazania too, but those rabbits just won't leave them alone no matter where I plant them, they find them. PM2 The candy lily where WS 3 years ago and just started to bloom Aug 6. Funny to cause I was going to move the fans this fall to a different location because they weren't blooming and was so surprised to see the flower stems full of buds show up all but over night. They are planted in an area that gets morning sun and then sun again later in the afternoon. They will get more sun after a big oak tree is taken down. These are all the same color though I know they come in different colors. Hoping for seeds. I'm pretty sure they can grow in full sun to part shade. Mine are in part shade. Fran

I'm certainly not down on all Ebay sellers. I bid on and won some from a lady in Ohio. We communicated back and forth by e-mail. She sent really nice big rhizomes and loads of extras. I actually ordered from her twice. My last order was about the time she was stopping selling for the season. I ordered one Tanya Lynn iris. She sent a bag marked "left over Tanya Lynn". I think there were seven in that bonus bag, in addition to the one I bought. I would certainly buy from her again. I also bought iris from Stoutgardens in Ok. He sent absolutely huge iris, some with three and four big green fans. He sent me two huge bonus iris. He apologized that the Okapi Poppy was small, sent me two, and said if they didn't grow and do well next spring, to contact him. Those "small" Okapi Poppy were about as big as the largest one I got from The-iris-cottage, and these were freshly dug with green fans. The ones I got from iris cottage were kinda dirty, dry, and some just had a hint of green, some had none. So, no, I'm not giving up on Ebay iris sellers, just being more careful from now on, and keeping pictures and all seller information until I see what the blooms look like,thanks to the advice of some of you more experienced iris growers. I have two bhut jalokias and one naga dorsett growing, that I started on 2-1, and are already flowering - indoors, under HPS. The BJs are larger, but not by much, and the ND is the first one to have flowers that opened. Still have no idea when they will produce and ripen, but I started them very early, so I won't have to wait until Oct.! And I have a guy at work who is going to be the first to try them, that eats my gold bullets and makes comments like "I thought that was a gold bullet, not a cold bullet!" The red savinas definitely aren't what they used to be, and the testing confirmed my "unscientific" testing, though they used to be much hotter. One chocolate variety got him pretty well, but still wasn't what the RSs were years ago. I am hoping these will call his bluff... Here are the photos of their growth. It is strange, in that both loose many lower leaves, then where the leaves were, another stem is beginning to grow. I'd put an old wooden table to the left of the fridge with a big basket under it for kitchen laundry or recycling. I'd also put a back on the kitchen side of the open shelves on the wall to the left of the Hoosier, and use it to be seen from the hall side, which would allow you to use all of the space on the kitchen side. Then I'd buy or build two fairly shallow cabinets on either side of the Hoosier...one as a food pantry, and the other for your kitchen dishes & silverware, and all those cooking and serving things you use less than once a week. You've got plenty of room for generous ones side to side, and if you keep them shallow, you can get at everything in them. I would take them almost all the way up, with closed doors. You can keep your clean kitchen linens there, and all the cookbooks you have too many of and don't use all the time...and you can keep one shelf empty. (My grandmother used to call that the "parson's crypt." You're sitting at your kitchen table with a nice bourbon and water and the newspaper and a lot of other mess around, and suddenly you see the parson coming up the walk.) My daughter calls it the mother-in-law shelf. Same idea.

My husband wear shorts in the coldest weather too. Once, we were shopping in the mens dept to get him a vest for his tuxedo on Dec 31st (had a wedding to go to on the millennium New Years). I went to pay while he browsed some more and the clerk ringing me up pointed out "that idiot wearing shorts this time of year". I had to explain he was my then-fiance and try not to laugh. She was right though, it was well below freezing outside in a NY winter (much colder than this year).

Your pix looks so pretty, but I suspect it gets old after a while to live in it.

marcydc - yes, we have propane & diesel tanks. Hubby keeps them cleared off.

Here's an aerial view of the workers shoveling off the tank farm tanks to give you a better perspective. Huge! There are 14 tanks on the East tank farm & 4 on the West tank farm. They are 250 ft diameter & 63 ft tall & each holds half a million barrels of oil

Unbelieveable. We are having our first snow storm of the winter in the Chicago area and I forgot how much I hate snow. Kids are excited though. I will have to show them you photos!

We spent 2 weeks in Alaska in Sept. including 2 nights at the alyeska Resort...loved your pics!
