Kim, I just wanted to thank you for posting the other day. I'm on dialysis, too. The other day (Thursday) I called an ambulance to get me to the hospital for my treatment. We had 14 inches of snow. THe police "first responder" told me I should not have called an ambulance. I should shovel out my driveway. I later reported that cop to the Police Commissioner for being so unpleasant to me. I posted all this at KT, somebody wrote I should get on Home Dialysis. You defended me. You explained why home dialysis isn't for everyone. Then I heard you were feeling ill because your own dialysis schedule had been thrown off. I hope you are feeling a little better today. Have a nice Valentine's Day. And stay well. Hugs to both of you. Dialysis is no fun. Feeling rotten if you miss the dialysis is no fun either. You are both in my thoughts and prayers and I add you to my get well wishes on Thursdays when I wear red for those fighting cancer. Give me chemo anyday!

Here is more logic for engineer-types-- With alkaline soil areas, peat appears to have postive effects because the salts (excess minerals) present in irrigation water (Los Angeles?) easily move through the peat-amended soil profile, as the acidity frees up these minerals that would otherwise tightly bond to the non-peat amended, alkaline soil. (The salts, if allowed to accumulate in alkaline soil, will eventually impede root growth to a very large degree. This occurs often, with improper, shallow watering techniques.) However, where amended soil (peat or compost) in a bed butts up against non-amended soil beneath, a barrier is created that produces a perched water table, which holds up the salts from being further flushed to safely below. Ordinarily, to get around the accumulation of salts that inhibit deep root growth in alkaline soil, deeper watering is called for, and less frequently, which will push the salts lower simply due to the large mass of water combined with gravity. This is not easily accomplished with peat amended soil. Peat holds water so well, compared to compost, (if it remains hydrated), that it is eventually evaporated off or used up by the shallower roots before it is allowed to travel further in depth. Simply watering more can drown the plant or it will find a place to run off. So, the gardener loses one of his/her best tools in keeping the root zone free from accumulating salts by using peat. Therefore, lower drought tolerance, with shallow roots is the result, and weaker plants. I'm not certain how an an engineer wouldn't agree, with a little bit of patience of the technical talk. Fogrose, back in the days with the USDA urged people to plant multiflora hedges on rural property (yes, they actually did), my Dad surrounded a two acre plot on three sides with multiflora. Several of the plants sported to a light pink. He was delighted. It's a pity that multiflora is so problematic, because we had lots of wildlife living in that hedge, including families of ringneck pheasants. But our neighboring farmer was dismayed that multiflora seedlings kept coming up in his fields, so eventually my Dad had to remove all the plants. It was a huge job. ( Hmm, I remember thinking he was too old for that kind of manual labor, but I work just as hard and now I am about the same age he was when he did that task.) He removed all several hundred plants except, that is, for his favorite pink one, which to my dismay he stubbornly insisted on keeping. And this was in the days before we knew to worry about RRD and the multiflora connection. Folly

Thanks,Did you hear back yet?people just dont know whats involved in dialysis.Yesterday my blood pressure wouldnt come up,it went in the ditches.I couldnt leave till we got it up.It was snowing,everytime I stood up i thought I was gonna pass out.Took over an hour.

It took me two years to adjust to dialysis. Half-way thru the treatment, my blood pressure would suddenly drop. I'd feel hot, nauseated, just horrible. I vomited a few times. They'd give me back some of the fluid they removed and give me oxygen. I think my body was going into shock from the sudden removal of all that fluid. Now I'm used to it, but I'll often come home and take a four hour nap. I call it "The Torture of the Damned."

I've also had a few problems with bleeding. Once one of the needles popped out of my arm while I was asleep. Nobody noticed until this red pool formed below my chair. Three times I've gotten part way home to find my sleeve full of blood. I'm much more careful now.

If you are talking about home dialysis, I did post that my former neighbor was on home dialysis only due to the fact we lived so far out in the country and her husband had some medical training from the service and the hospital put him thru special training to do it. They set up a room with all the equipment, received everything at home etc. Would I want to do this? NO NO, it takes a special person/spouse to do it. I hope I did not give the impression that everyone should try it. Believe me that is not the message I meant to send. This was a one case only. She was a special person and I really do miss her.

There are lots of choices for dialysis- in center hemodialysis three times a week (which I do), nocturnal in-center dialysis six or seven nights a week,ambulatory dialysis, Peritoneal dialysis done at home plus home hemodialysis. The last two require a medically trained "partner" and involve having a private sanitized room, a water supply and storage space for all the supplies. Hopefully anyone starting dialysis is given enough information to make a personal choice. And you can change methods at any time. I'm happy with in-center dialysis. The nurses and technicians do all the work and insert the needles, and they are right there if I have any problems. Sort of like childbirth-I chose to deliver my babies in a hospital.
