Best way to make pedastals?

We recently bought LG front-loading washer/dryer for our new house and would like to build our own pedastals.

All ideas are welcome!

we bought some "scratch & dent" ones off ebay...

may take awhile! to find some cheap ones...w/shipping !

Thanks regus, that is a good idea...looks like they are about half price.

We were thinking about doing something 'custom' for the pedestals though. But might have to go with the scratch and dent and just not worry about it ;-)

I'm surprised more people haven't responded...I would've thought more people would have made their own pedestals....

I actually went out and gathered 35 bags of leaves this fall. (Not a tree in my yard, the neighbors yes, but I can get them pre-bagged for free anywhere in the city!). Did the same thing last year out front so I know this works. #1--build raised bed--cheap lumber in a square 3'x8' (I'm short so 3' is better than the usual 4'Wide) #2--filled with a bale of straw--till 6-8" thick, add leaves, plus free compost from the city. Water well between each layer. #3--Then let it sit and compost for the winter. By spring it will be half as thick and ready to add just enough soil on top to plant the plants. My tomato plants were almost 7' tall--despite all the rains it drained very well and saved my garden. This year that vegetable garden will be flower beds (out front) and doing the same thing for raised beds out back--yep, 35 bags of oak leaves gone in a snap!!

Sometimes water-rooted cuttings will go into shock when you plant them in soil. They might still recover for you. I usually take a 2 to 3 inch cutting, cut (don't strip) off the bottom sets of leaves, then dip the stem in rooting hormone. I stick it in a small cell-pack (saved from baby bedding plants over the summer) of damp, good-quality potting mix and keep it moist until it roots. Signs of rooting are new growth at the top, or a resistance when you tug - very gently - on the cutting. You can plant the spearmint in the ground once it's rooted, but basil won't be winter-hardy in our zone. I've had good luck with keeping rooted cuttings in a sunny window over the winter. Just don't let your basil's leaves touch a cold windowpane or they'll turn black. Big "whack on the side of the head" came for me last year. I had been hauling in a largish rose geranium for the past couple of years. It occurred to me that scented geraniums root really easily. They grow fast in the summer. so, why was I taking precious window space with a big, sunloving plant that would get spindly, nasty, and pest-infested over the winter? I took several cuttings and composted the mother plant. The little cuttings held fine over the winter in their small cell-packs, then filled out a planter nicely this summer. I'm going to try this with other "must keep" plants this winter - and this weekend will be a perfect time to start!

Annie, I used your method -- just heated some caramels and some water into the microwave. It worked fine, and I even got the amount of water right, quite by chance. We had it last night over vanilla ice cream. It was good, but.. these were the TJ "fleur de sel" caramels, and that saltiness became more noticeable in the sauce. So it was best with a restrained amount of sauce. I'm thinking it would be very good in something like turtle candy. Maybe a liquid turtle. As I was eating my caramel sundae, I thought again how much Haagen-Dazs vanilla has changed for the worse. Until the last few years, it was one of the truly perfect foods. Now it is much sweeter, and the vanilla flavor is different. I wonder if there's an ice cream like the old Haagen-Dasz vanilla.

"Never mind, you guys are right, I would just backstab it and let it go at that." THAT is a lousy connection. Back wire devices that use a screw and pressure plate are very reliable, as are wrapping around a screw and securing. The actual torque specs for screws are surprisingly high. You are making a gas tight connection and deforming the copper wire. The back stab spring connections are a notorious source of failure. Initially they were allowed on #14 and #12 wire. The holes are now to small for #12 and only allow #14. I will not use them even for #14.

screw gun, hand saw. Plywood. 2x4s. Paint, adhesive tiles or ceramic.

If you're talking side by side, then make sure the 2x4s are under each corner of each unit (8 in all).

Assuming you want to make it about 12" tall, and you aren't too particular about that height, I would go buy some 1/2" exterior plywood, a couple of 2x4s and some deck screws (probably galvenized or stainless). I would cut 8 pieces of 2x4 into 1' lengths. I would measure the width of both units, lets say 60" wide and 28" deep. I would cut pieces of plywood 60"x28" for the top, 2 60"x12" for the front and back, and 2 28"x12" for the sides. At each corner of the 60"x28" piece I would attach (with screws) a 2x4 piece vertically. Then (assuming both the w/d are 28" wide at their feet) I would measure from the corners and attach the other 4 2x4s 28" from the ends (leaving about 4" in between them). I would then attach all the sides, turn it over, and paint or tile as I felt. Check and trim for level, put it in place, put the units on it and enjoy.
