My first thought was matt black or possibly matching the stain on the cabinets. I think a lighter color would give it that kitchny look. Color for the walls could be almost anything as long as it's not too dark. It would depend on the mood you want for the room. That, for me, would depend on what I was using the office for. It looks like it's going to be an awesome space.
Remember too you can always bring light to the floor with an area rug with a low nap so you can still roll your desk chairs over it.

I think black countertops would be nice in there. Use a lighter tan on the walls to highlight the cabinets and your countertops won't even attract attention.

One thing to remember with stark black, especially in an office, they do show every speck of dust and paper, so you will have to clean it more often. An old supervisore used to complain constantly about how hard it was to keep her desk clean. We used a lot of pencil and eraser crumbs would stick to her black desk. It really showed a lot, where my lighter colored desk didn't show it nearly as badly.

Thanks for your replies. I work part time from home - about 20 hours per week - so that's where I will be working. At other times, my son will be using it for homework and computer time. My husband will also use it occasionally for the computer.

I think I will do the matte black. There is nice one that has a dot detail in the finish. I will probably have to dust the whole room quite often - or close he door!

That is great point about an area rug. I plan on putting something nice and colorful in there. Maybe even some Flor tile.

We did a home office last year. At first we were going to use a closet company, like Closet World, but eneded up getting a quote from a custom cabinet maker. Was pleasant surprised to find while the cabinets priced in a bit higher, wood counters were much less than a laminate so in the end was a wash.

Valinsv, nice office! Our cabinets are already here. They are made by Kitchen Craft (a Canadian Company). We bought cabinets for the kitchen, office and all the bathrooms at the same time. They are really nice quality, dove tail drawer construction, full extension and soft close. I especially love my kitchen cabs in Maple painted seashell.

Your wood counters are really nice but that is not going to happen for us. I made the decision today with out GC to use matte black laminate and he is going to trim the edge in beveled maple, stained to match the cabinets. I hope it looks good.
