Is anyone making saurkraut?

I don't have a lot of cabbage in the garden, but would like to preserve what I do have. I've seen two methods: The most common seems to be the fermentation process, but the one by P. Allen Smith looks much easier. So I'm wondering if any of you are making saurkraut, or have made it in the past, and can give me some insight.

The method I'm leaning to by Smith is this:

1. Pack shredded cabbage into quart jars.

2. Add one tsp each of sugar, salt, & vinegar into each jar.

3. Pour boiling water over all.

4. Screw on lids and store for one month in a cool, dark place.

According to Smith, you can also process in a boiling water bath.

Has anyone used this method? Also, I live alone so I only want to process pints, not quarts. If I do this, do I halve the recipe, or use the same amounts of sugar, etc., in the pint jars?
