Mixing door styles in kitchen and bar area?

I am planning a renovation of a galley kitchen that opens on to a family room. On the "working" side of the kitchen I am drawn to an overlay door as it seems less "busy" for my compact space. The kitchen will be white painted framed cabs with a modified shaker stle door front, 5 piece drawer fronts. On the "entertainment" side of the kitchen which opens onto a family room I will have an island and a bar cabinet. These pieces will be done in either cherry or walnut, same door and drawer style as the kitchen. The bar will have 21" drawer stack with a stepped back, 10" glass cab atop the drawers. I want the doors to be pocket doors which would require an inset door. I also think the inset door on the island would provide more of a "furniture" look. SO, how do you think the mix of door styles in these two adjacent spaces would work? Thx for your insights!

I think it will look great- mix and match away!

my kitchen is white with shaker inset cabinets and polished nickel hardware. We have a built in in the eat in kitchen that has stained cabinets and ORB hardware. In fact the hardware is competely different. Kitchen has 5 piece drawer fronts, dining room has slab. As long as the cabinets compliment each other, it should be fine!

I agree with lascatx. I have raised panel overlay on my perimeter, which is white, and the same raised panel overlay on my island, which is espresso. A separate section of my perimeter, which comprises the stove alcove and flanking cabinetry, is the same white as the other white cabs, but is full-flush with a bead, and raised panel doors. It all ties in beautifully, IMHO, because the sections all relate to each other. The Danby marble counters are the same, in an effort to pull it all together. Although I have that same slab marble behind the range, the b-splash behind the cabs flanking the range is the same tile as the rest of the b-splash behind the white perimeter cabs. Also pulling it together are glass-fronted double-stacked uppers in both perimeter sections, and the same drawer pulls and cabinet knobs throughout. So, like Lascatx says, "keep it related" and it can be gorgeous.

Well, thank you for asking! It's beautiful. I still have a few bumpy places to sand out, but I hate to create so much dust. Other than that, I'm trying to decide how to finish it. I want to stain it, but can't find info on how to stain maple without it blotching. It's really pretty, though. When I have a place to put all the crap on it, I'll try to get a picture. It's hard on a cell phone and a loooooonnnnnnggggg countertop!

I wanted to do something different because those double doors are right in the middle of the wall in the center of the kitchen. I like the french country farmhouse look which is why I picked those. Do you think something more farmhouse like these would work? I'm worried doing shaker, but not 2 panel like my powder room door will look like I tried to match but couldn't. I wish I could see some pictures of spaces with different types of doors in them but I can't find any! Maybe that means Patricia is right and I should just make them all the same!

Hello Nicole Ann! My general opinion is mixing styles is 100% ok room to room & can sometimes result in something new when done properly in the same room. Very few people fit into a box & same goes for their homes. Have a great weekend!, -f

Our kitchens and reasoning aren't the same, but I have 3 different door styles in my kitchen. I have one on most of the perimeter, but in 2 different colors, most natural fir and one wall of burgundy. I have another door style on the cream painted island, and the 3rd is in the stove area, which are painted gray. They are all a variation on Shaker, so go together in that way, but have enough difference (for me) to create the partly unfitted look I wanted.

I think your ideas and your reasoning for doing as you suggest sound very good.
