Very interesting feedback. I didn't mention in my first post but the wall tile in the bathroom will be porcelain but will have the "look" of marble. It is a fairly gentle pattern but because of the "marble", I think that will help with toning down the "modern" a bit. I also like Joanne's suggestion about using wood. I think I can do something with my choice of flooring that can make the floor be a moderating factor as she suggests. trailrunner: - I think your comments have convinced me to go with asian rugs. I've been struggling with this and thinking about going with more contemporary rugs but seems like the rugs are a good way to add the traditional element leaving some room to do contemporary/eclectic with the furnishings. I may even look for an "asian" bathmat for the bathroom. I bet they exist somewhere. I also think besides going with wood or wood look on the floor in bathroom, there will be a rather tall floating cabinet against one wall -- I had been looking at Ikea for this but this would be a good opportunity to bring in something less modern. So the main modern elements will be the floating fixtures and floating vanity (sink will be drop in) with a less modern floor and cabinet. I may pay particular attention to the sconces on each side of the medicine cabinet. I can see how accessories can make a huge difference. Thanks everyone! I have hope it won't be a freakish experience for a visitor to walk from the main part of house into the hall bath.

The vanity you chose is very handsome. The turned feet & slim molding give it a softer & more polished look than many of the strictly linear forms while staying casual & informal. Find closed cupboards & drawers easier to maintain than low shelving in baths for those less meticulous among us & the extra out-of-sight storage welcome for nondecorative grooming essentials & cleansers. The only thing I find disproportional compared to older furniture versions of this style is the skimpy size of the knobs, and prefer them with beefier substance more in scale to my eye. They come in a variety of materials & finishes. Stone tops are practical & classical. Consider marble the formica of the Victorian & Edwardian ages, commonly used with the arrival of indoor plumbing that spurred the trend of rooms devoted to personal hygiene. Nini804 -- You hit the nail on the head! Even though I love some other elements, I always come back to this formal look. But, I want it to look warm too. You're right about the shades. This is a guest bathroom that will most likely be used a few times a week. I've also noticed that my bathroom designers (there are 2 who help me) have totally different taste, and they often show me only their designs. I told them the kinds of things I like, but one of them shows me all white all the time -- And the other one tells me to mix whatever I want and be unique. I need someone who can know what items I like, and then guide me to pairing them. That's been the part I cannot find. That's why I come here because I can get opinions from others who have more experience. Thanks so much for your help!
