What size cabinets do you have?

I recently purchased a GE model FL W/D with pedastals. Now we're looking to put cabinets above the W/D, but realized that stock upper cabinets are too shallow for me to reach. I really don't want "utility" cabinets because my W/D are at the end of my kitchen. Am I stuck with getting custom cabinets made? Or using a stool everytime I need to get something out of those cabinets? (that cabinet will be storage as well as extra laundry stuff - ie.. bleach, extra things that won't fit in pedastals) The width of that area is about 64 1/2 inch. I'm not sure of the depth, but my W/D stick out just a tad from the wall ... see picture:

Any suggestions? DH is very opposed to shelving, that's what we had before and because of the nature of stuff that gets put up there it always looked cluttered.

I asked a similar question a couple of months ago. I only got one response, but it might help you a little (see link below). We ended up getting custom cabinets that are a standard depth. We haven't moved in yet, so I can't tell you what it's like. I'm pretty sure I'll have to have a little step-stool in there.

I did have a really good (I thought!) idea of an invention to help with this. Wouldn't it be nice if you could store all of your stuff in there, but each liquid would have it's own screw on tap. You know, like on a keg of beer? You would just grab the hose and push the button to squirt it right into the container on the washer. I asked at the appliance store where I bought the washer and dryer if anything like that existed, and he looked at my like I was nuts. ;-) Oh well.

Thanks for the link! I'm afraid unless I put a lot of money into two cabinets, I'll have the standard depth of 12" also. Maybe I can talk DH into building a box of some sorts to extend over the W/D ..... only in my dreams! :-)

I sent the sharp specs to the KD and this was his response: " The minimum Requirement for 24" width means that clearance of inside of cabinet has to be at least 24" , a 24" wide cabinet has 22 Â¼" clearance and 27" cabinet has 25 Â¼" clearance ( because of two Â¾" thick sides of each respected cabinets)." This makes no sense because the Sharp specs which say the opening must be 22 1/8" because according to his measurements it would fit! He obviously didn't read the sharp specs I sent him. Is he just difficult or lazy (sorry to vent here, I'm trying to remember why we didn't DIY!) Thanks once again to all you gardenwebbers for teaching me so much and helping me design a kitchen exactly the way *I* want it!

I find I'm constantly having to sort out what is good for the cabinetmaker versus good for the buyer. Cabinet makers love concealed "euro" hinges because they are easy and adjustable. Why would I want them, though? Apart from the look, I mean. All my house's interior and exterior doors have mortised barrel hinges, and they all work fine. I never need to adjust them. I think the suggestion that you may want to adjust your own cabinet doors on some future date is a red herring. It's cheaper and quicker and easier for the cabinetmaker. (Note: This may translate into cheaper for you or not) There's a well-respected Amish cabinetmaker near us that advertises that they use "French Dovetails" for their drawers as they are stronger. As far as I can work out, they are less attractive, reduce the space in the drawer, and have less wood-to-wood glue surface (i.e. less strong), but they are probably machined in about a tenth of the time as traditional (English) dovetails. Advantages for the cabinetmaker: many. Advantages for you: none. I know it's a trade off. The cabinetmakers time equals my money. But I get annoyed when they aren't upfront about it and try to hide behind supposed benefits of changes that are really to reduce their work and costs. As an amateur woodworker I can see some of what they're doing, but I wonder what I miss when dealing with other disciplines. For what it's worth we want exposed barrel hinges for our craftsman house. And I expect them to be perfect if I pay a custom cabinetmaker.

Temperature is important, but pay attention to CRI (color rendition index) for undercabinet lighting, or wherever you prepare food. Lots of cheap LEDs and fluorescents have CRI's in the low 80's or worse and will make your food look like it comes from a zombie. (If the manufacturer doesn't tell you the CRI you can assume it's lousy.) LED's don't put out a full spectrum of light so require special (ie expensive) tricks to get good color rendering. You want a CRI of at least 90, I would argue anywhere, but at the least in food prep areas and illuminating art. Incandescent lamps have a CRI of 100.

The cabinets in my laundry room are 12" deep. I am 5'2" and I can easily reach only the bottom shelf. I keep a folding three step step ladder in the laundry room which makes it easy to reach every thing. The one I have is called a Skinny Mini, I got mine at Meijers. When folded it is about 2" deep so it is easy to store, and it is very sturdy. My brother-in-law has used it without trouble, and he weighs about 250. I used to store it between my dryer and the wall, but it does not fit as good with my new dryer, and I don't want to hurt the dryer so I just lean it against the wall now.

You could use 24" deep wall refrigerator cabinets over them. The depth will require extra support though. Either from the sides (between walls or panels) or from the ceiling.

Since you already have walls in place you have the ideal space for them. You could also "fur out" the back wall behind the cabs to bring them forward even more.

What about using "base" cabinets and trimming out the bottoms of them? They could flip the doors so the handles are at the bottom for you... or better yet if the handles aren't on when they arrive you could just attach them at the bottom....

I personally don't have cabinets over my machines as they are in a closet. I have a hanging rod across the whole closet for when things come out of the dryer (NO pedestals) and a shelf above them... I keep my two containers (soap and vingear) on top of the washer... have a rubber no-slip carpet pad cut to fit the top to keep it from scratching... this works in my set up, obviously it's not what you're looking for...
