Home made laundry detergent and FL question

alley

I actually have several questions.

I just made some laundry detergent (fels naptha soap, borax and washing soda recipe). It seemed quite gell-y. I have a garden recipe book that also calls for a fels naptha solution. It says to add some liquid dish soap to keep it from gelling. So I addded some to my detergent and it has made it smoother. (although I was doing it from memory and used liquid hand soap instead of dish soap).

1. does it change the detergent properties if I add the dish soap?

2. Is the liquid detergent that I made with the fels naptha, borax and washing soda supposed to gel? The directions just said it would thicken as it cooled.

3. How much of this do I use in a front loader?

Speaking of front loaders, I was reading on both the borax and the washing soda that you can add it to the washer to soften water and use less detergent. When and where do I do that? Do I put it in with the detergent in the cup, or do I sprinkle some over the clothes before I close the door?
