Bathrooms for new construction

I need advice. I am building a house with 4 bathrooms.

The master bath will have crema marfil marble vanity tops with Ristano floor and shower tile in the Bianco color. I plan to stain the cabinets.

My boy's bathroom is completely different- black/white octagon tile mosaic, victorian cross handle faucets, white tile shower, black painted cabinets. This is a style I LOVE!!

The tile store owner who is helping me pick out my tile thinks the other 3 baths should be the mosaic tile too. I just can't decide. Should 3 out of 4 bathrooms look just alike and the 4th one look totally different? Or should I do two mosaic and two ristano bianco?

My husband does not want white floors in our bathroom so that is why I picked the crema marfil and beige like tile color scheme for the master.

You might get a better bulk purchase price if you do 3 bathrooms with the same tiles. Less waste also. I just did 3 bathrooms and used the same travertine tile for a price savings. The tiles were cut & laid in different ways to alter the look.

I wouldn't do 2 mosaic & 2 ristano. I think having the master bath in a different material will make it more master-bath like & something special, not routine.

Both styles sound lovely. You can customize the look of the 3 matching baths by using different colored towels or wall paint. The continuity of the tile & cabinetry will be nice and really make the master more dramatic.

I recently had the creama marfil tile w/ black absolute installed in my foyer(love it!!) The thing with the marfil is 'staining'' will come thru once it's laid down. It's very pourous, and once it gets wet from the grout, the stains just appear~some are pinkish and some more tan~veining seem to increase also. I have a large tan tile in my MB with the beige color scheme also~very elegant.

Have you thought of using furniture style vanities in your MB? ;o)

i'm sure others will have more professional thoughts, but i have a couple based on my one & only reno when i installed a drop-in tub with 3 walls around it, small deck around 4 edges. i tiled the deck before putting in the tub. also tiled the walls around it before dropping the tub. i haven't tried doing it afterwards, but i would suggest at least considering tiling before the tub goes in. lots more room to move around, less worry about mess & tools harming the tub. lisa

I am in Cleveland. When I have seen non-smooth drywall surfaces, I think to myself, "what are they hiding? What a shame". I personally hate how it looks. Smooth is much more sophisticated and "normal". We had that trowel plastered look at our old house and I absolutely hated it. It was in the attic at my Mom's house to hide the drywall joints and I hated it. My friends house has it all up the stairs and I hate it. A decent drywall person should be able to make smooth walls for you. Ceilings are another story, but any drywall person worth their dithers should be able to make a decently smooth wall!!! It's fairly common in older houses to not have "perfect" walls. Ceilings often have a swirly pattern, I don't see flat too often. Our kitchen ceiling is flat but the rest of the ceilings are swirlies. I personally prefer Satin for walls and Semi-Gloss for painted trim. I *hate* eggshell and flat - I find them to be difficult to clean, they are dirt magnets, and I don't particularly care for the look of them. And I don't like how they feel. I think Satin is a nice compromise between shininess and flatness. JMO, of course.

You can't possibly have 20 years of knowledge about anything since you read like a first grader. If you start reading from the beginning, you and the rest of the world will see that I am the one that said there will need to be 2 fans, and that YOU are the one that said; neu2you Yesterday at 5:34AM A fan is not necessary over the toilet ! Just because you stuck your foot in YOUR mouth right out the gate, doesn't mean you can start putting words in mine trying to make yourself look better. Where in the world did I ever say that "odors from the WC (in a compartment or not ) are more detrimental"?? I have said "and 80(+ cfm) just outside the shower" from the start, and "It is NEVER because people think it will get rid of the stink better that way." I also suggested a heat recovery system (remote blower) before you ever showed up. Nobody said "government knows best for us" but YOU. All I said was that "your theory of the intent of the code" was wrong. Neither the code, or myself intend to get into a debate about which area is more important to have an exhaust fan, as it is a moot point since both places are REQUIRED to have "ventilation" PERIOD. I never said I have "replaced thousands" of fans. I INSTALL thousands of fans, even now, not back at WWII. AND, they are 99% all BROAN/Nutone. So are the ones I repair or replace, including the 744. If you think 20+ years is lasting "a life time", then you are still wet behind the ears. (Neu really does suit you for a name, I bet they call you that at work) That is when most of them go out, although some go out within a couple years, depending on the habits of the inhabitants. Most people are still paying off their mortgage at 20+ years. How would YOU like it if your car was worthless and had to be replaced before it was even paid for? In contrast, I have yet to need to replace a fan less than 35 years old that is placed just outside the shower. And, what are you planning on doing for the steam you get when filling the tub with hot water, just add a third fan? SURE, you could, but these people are not just building this house "virtually" on the web. REAL MONEY doesn't grow on trees. It appears, that in your 20+ years, you have made the same mistakes for 3 houses and leave them just as things start falling apart, and you get that 7 year itch. Frankly, I would never want the extra draft you get by pulling cooler air into the shower area when the fan is in there with you.

Rain shower head drips when other heads are turned on. Ideas?

well, good idea but here's the problem - the faucet for the main shower head is just inside the shower door and I can turn that on and not get wet when the cold water comes down and wait for the water to warm up. But to turn on the rain shower head (or the hand shower - each water source has its own faucet), I have to be standing at the end of the shower where the three water sources are located - so I'd get doused with cold water turning on the rain shower head. In fact, even after the water coming out of the main shower head is warm, the rain shower spits out cold water at first. So what I've been doing when I can't stand being dripped on by cold water is endure a dousing in cold water in order to have those incessant drips be warm. Not a happy solution. It drips all the time once it starts. It doesn't start until a couple of minutes have elapsed. It drips even if I've not used the rain shower head in weeks (I tried not turning it on for awhile yet it dripped cold water on me daily). I guess I do have a diverter (sorry, I don't know all the technical lingo) - I know that I just inside the shower (imagine a long shower with the door at one end and the bathing area at the other end) I have a faucet that turns on the regular shower head. At the other end on the wall, there's the faucets for the rain shower head (on the right), the hand held (on the left) and to set the temperature for all of them (in the middle).

I agree with hhireno about keeping the master bath individual, and it sounds like a beautiful plan.

If you are not concerned about resale, then it sounds like a good idea to do the black and white in your other three bathrooms since it's something you love, and it does sound quite classic.

If you ARE concerned about resale, I'd only be concerned that not everyone likes that starkness and a potential buyer might be put off by three of those puppies to have to decorate around or change.

:)I did ask my tile guy about a discount and he said no. I tried though! That is great advice to think of it as making the master special to set it apart. Thanks!
My master vanities are on peg feet with a special molding on the ends, and my powder vanity is very furniture like. I wish I knew how to insert a pic here so you could see. I will include my link to snapfish so you can see my album. It's a lot of pics to wade through -- the cabinets are down at the end.

pattycakes- (love your user name)I will have crema marfil just on my counter top - the floor will be a ceramic tile that just coordinates well. Your house sounds gorgeous with the black granite and crema marfil!

bigdoglover- You are right that not everyone would love this look and it could very well scare off potential buyers. I plan to live in this house for a looongggg time. But you never know what can happen so resale is always at the back of my mind during the build. That being said, now I am afraid of my mosaic plan!!
