Last moment coincidence... but I got my marble

Kinda weird... as I posting about the table I re-check craigslist for the 5th time today for my "standard" needed items of which marble is on. (Earlier we went to slab yard and saw beautiful marble but would have to have purchased an entire slab and then get fabricated... too much $$$$ for me)

So... here it is about 5:30pm and I email the guy with mine and DH's phone number. Here was a cararra marble slab in almost the EXACT dimensions I need. 5 minutes later I hear DH on the phone and he says... comeon' we gotta go.

I get into the car and we RACE down to Coral Gables in Miami as someone else was coming to look at it at 6:30. Now with traffic, we'd have been outta luck but with the holiday we made it in record time.

These two guys are remodeling their place and had this on a bar. The size is perfect. It's cararra, it's finished already, and might even just fit onto the table with no fabricating. It's not my dream of wild calcutta but we got it for $125. It's nice, I'm happy, and it'll do exactly what I need it to do for approx. 1/10 the price of what I was looking at otherwise.

You see it's got a little hole drilled. They had lamp wire going down through it. I'm not too worried about it. I'll either keep my mixer on it or stick a plug somewhere where the wire can go down through that and into the outlet.

After over 2 years of looking and all that recent talk about my progress, the table, Josh coming with the soapstone and it just pops up in the exact size. Karma? Divine Intervention? Or just plain odd.

UmmmI REALLY think that hole ruins the slab..I will come and take this awful flawed piece of marble off of your hands....this weekend...

I can't let that statement stand without some comment. Schreader leak problem -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From another site I won't name: "Purchase yourself a core removal tool which will allow you to replace the schreader core without pumping down the system. This will work providing the valve has adequate clearence around it to accommodate the core removal tool. Some advice on the tool - Don,t over tightened the knurled nuts on the tool. Use only sufficient pressure so the connection doesn't leak, but don't crank down on them, the core won,t pass through the gasket. I use the J/B brand, but I"m sure there are other brands that will work equally as well. Be sure to use a touch of compressor or vacuum pump oil on the removal tool slide and sealing gaskets, helps it to last longer and seal up easier, good luck." This was in response to someone posting a question of removing the core without a pumpdown. If you can get your hose on a unit's schraeder valve you probably can get your handy dandy core remover tool on the fitting and extract the old core without releasing any refrigerant. Simply insert a new core in and use the tool as provided in the instructions and the new core screws in nicely. It has worked for me on more than one occassion. I, however, don't have thousands of units experience but I can say that I have found a few older units where the scraders are so inaccessible that even a hose low loss fitting can't be hooked up. For that you need another fitting made for those difficult to access engineers brain farts. Sorry Bob, you made it sound like removing a core without a pump down is an impossible task. That is misleading tho I don't doubt that you have had trouble accomplishing this. Because you said that was so.

My partially completed Ipe deck, I got some questions...

First I'd like to thank everyone for the info on this site. Second this is an update to my Ipe deck project. I finished the back deck, except for the step, and am working on the front deck now (pics of that someday). Check the link below to see my photos. Weedy, how exactly do you post the photos directly in this message? I don't see any obvious way to do it. I guess you have to write some (fairly simple) html? This project is taking me forever, being a weekend warrior, having 3 young kids, and 2 unfinished bathrooms inside the house. So the staining will have to wait until next year. Should be ok, right? So right now I am having some concerns with the quality of the Ipe I got. Seems ok, but who knows, this is the one-and-only Ipe deck I have ever built. Some pieces are real dark, some are real light. Some are really really hard (dark boards), some are softer (light boards). Some are clear, some have a tiger-like grain to them. Some seem a bit rough when you run your hand up one way, then smooth if you rub the other way. 3 or 4 boards have lots and lots of checks, almost the whole 15 foot length of board. Most of the boards have no checks. I have one board that looks like it will destroy your foot if you walk on it. I think I'll have to replace that board, I don't know how I did not notice it, when I put that board down. It looks like the grain is sort of lifted, and could cause nasty splinters in your foot (See pictures 10 and 11). 3 or 4 few boards seem fine, but have knots in them (pics 13 and 15). Will these spots worsen over time? I bought 1725 linear feet of boards. There are probably six 15-footers that I probably should toss in the dumpster. Maybe six others that are usable but not the greatest. Not really sure about the rest, if it is so-so, good, great, top quality or not. Of course I was assured that the Ipe was top quality, all heart wood clear Ipe, blah blah blah. Would anyone expert here want me to mail them some scrap cuts to examine? Or even better, stop by and look at my deck? Just kidding… The railings. I chickened out on the Ipe railings. No way I get the project done this year. So I did the shiny PVC rail, and put an Ipe rail on top of it. I like it, I think the front deck I will do the same. First, OMG. Perfect! :) Second, get yourself some Arnica cream. Usually health food stores, but more recently in mainstream drug stores. It is incredible in what it does for muscles. Sometimes swelling, too. It's an herb, so look for the highest concentration of arnica in the cream. Interestingly enough, yoga teachers and (get this) pro football sports doctors have been using it for years. So. More about the top. I cannot believe how lucky you were to find this perfect, beautiful piece. Right place, right time! Enjoy and feel better.

Thank you Chris! Are you sure? I've never done anything like that and was just blending based on color intensity but I'm sure someone more artistic would do something more interesting! Thanks, Dianalo! Question for you about those hinges: would you do the lower cab hinges in butterfly style too, or would you use the hidden/concealed kind so as not to try to compete too much w/ the upper cabs? I know you can't see my lower cab doors yet but the problem is that they're basic shaker style w/ one panel so are similar yet also quite different from the upper cabs. So I thought changing the hardware will give it a deliberately different look without competing too much (?). The lower cabs will have polished nickel bin pulls and latches. I'll keep the uppers and the rest of the room's hardware black because it's too much to deal w/ at this time... but if I use butterfly hinges on the lower cabs too, will that look too busy do you think? I love the laminate and chrome banding look! Do you remember that link someone shared a couple of months ago that showed some famous person's beach house (or some vacation cottage of some sort) that used that look? Everyone raved about it and I was drooling. I'd love to see your inspiration pics or any progress you've made! The previous owner of this house gave me an old black and white photo of this kitchen long ago and it had what appears to be ORIGINAL (1913) laminate countertops w/ same chrome banding! The laminate (or whatever you call the product) was - she said - a pink marble-like pattern that extended all the way up the backsplash. I wish I could have seen it in color! I love sneaking pinks or tan-pinks into kitchens when possible (even if in towels and mugs, etc.) I even thought of painting my mudroom a salmon-ish pink!! Sorry for ranting!

What a good deal! It's so great when things work out like that.

Found out today that the trucking company finally got the payment for the extra delivery of my soapstone, so now they can release it to the company that will actually deliver it.

Now if the weather will only cooperate - I worked from home today. Got as far as the highway and it was glare ice, so I turned around and came home (live on a dirt road). We had rain on top of the snow so it's real fun out there right now -

congratulations! what a great find. dont you love CL?

i scored a brand new toto nexus for $200 last week. now i have to install it.

in los angeles, there are just incredible used furniture, granite slabs, etc to be found on CL.

you have to hustle to get the deals though. i am sure you must have been biting your nails driving down there ;)

What's a little crazy is I got up and did just that plllog!! I'm surprising not as excited as I thought I'd be. It all happened so quickly and so unexpectedly. I'll be excited when I get home from school tomorrow and DH has it here. Poor guy is worried about getting it home in one piece but he's tranported stone before.

Most excellent!

If the hole every bothered you, you could probably get a talented granite guy/gal to fill it in with a ground up marble/epoxy mixture and you would never miss it.

Onward to the next step!

You made your luck with persistence and effort. If you do the right things, like checking 5 times a day, you increase your odds tremendously and get luckier than those who don't ;)

You're so LUCKY!

I wanted a piece of remnant marble for my island. I saw one on CL, but when I emailed, turns out the marble was broken when they were moving it.

Unlike you, it wasn't meant to be.

Gosh, if those guys pulled out this awesome piece of stone, what are they replacing it with? Makes you wonder.

Sending luck out into the universe. But from experience... if you're searching for bargins, look multiple times a day on craigslist. I looked for 2 years for a marble slab even though I was no where near ready. Now, this is not to say that my strategy may not come back and bite you in the butt; but its a chance you take. That's how I got my ovens and cooktop and they've been sitting for awhile. In all that time, I only saw one other marble piece that could have worked and I couldn't locate the store. By the time I called the guy back again, they were gone. Literally, from email contact, to phone call, to standing in his condo was no more then 40 mins. While we were there the other guy interested called at 6:35 and boy was he P.O'd according to the seller. Cash talks...marble will walk today. I can't wait to get home to see it again. AND... Joshua comes to template tomorrow!!! Time to put in for a sub for my class!!

Yay!!! I am so happy for you!!! I also check CL multiple times a day. I'm actually feeling kind of lost because the kitchen is mostly done and I just finished reno-ing the last bathroom, so I don't have as much to look for on CL, materials-wise. I did score a Toto toilet with washlet for $150 at a yard sale, though :)

And, about that hole: it can be epoxied and ground and you'd never see it. I think it's pretty standard procedure for stone fabricators to do that during fabrication, especially on stone that has a lot of veins that tend to crumble when it's cut, like some quartzites.
