Need decorating help for living room!

I'm doing a slow, mainly DIY update to my living room. The wall color is Martha Stewart Corn silk- the color looked beige on the card, but is pale gold up on the walls. I've gotten to like it- it gives the warm, cozy look I want, and we often get compliments. So the wall color is staying. I'm embarrassed by the state of the sofa and love seat, but as long as we have our rowdy cat (a psycho), I don't want to invest in anything new. The two large bookcases were given to us just before the holidays. I had to move things around to accommodate them, and there is now a "dark wood presence" in the room that is OK- but I don't want it to get too dark.

I've decided to change the window treatments. I'm going with plantation blinds and valances on the two small windows. At first, I thought white blinds to match the woodwork, but now, I'm wondering if oak or walnut would balance out the bookshelves and be a better choice. I want a lighter, brighter fabric for the drapes.

Sorry this is so long, I'd love your opinions! Current pics to follow in next post.
