I need decorating help for my living room!!

Hey guys!! I’d love some help...I really have no idea how to decorate my living room!! Im in a townhouse so it all just kinda flows together and I have hated everything I’ve tried so far.. advice on the wall behind my couch? I fell in love with the thought of the dark accent wall and like a giant white mirror or something but I really would like some input!! Because my ideas have all proven awful. And the wall opposite the couch... Ignoring my daughters pictures..(she said she knew how to decorate better than mommy) I’m happy with the ledge shelves I’ve installed. I just ordered some more pics so I can make that look better.. any thoughts on the 40” spaces to the sides of the tv stand? And yes I hate where the couch is but don’t know what else would work! Thank you so much!!!! And btw.. The wall color looked amazing above the white cabinets in the kitchen so I carried it down the living room wall thinking I could use light decor to accent it

I always try to consider what will be reflected in the mirror and prefer something beautiful or interesting. I'm not sure a reflection of the TV will do that for the room. Art that you love will draw people to the sofa.

I love your colors! They go very well together and love the accent wall. Your drapes look good too!
I have two thoughts:
On either side of the TV, why not add more shelves and extend them down?
Also, maybe flip the sectional so it’s not in front of the window and move the chair to beside the window?

Thank you so much!! I didn’t even think of carrying the shelves all the way down. After I made them tho I did see a really cool post where someone “framed” in bookcases to make it appear as they were built in the wall! I can’t change the sectional shape tho:( I’ve thought about moving it over and putting the chair by the window but the chaise part of the sectional will still be in the way. :/ hmmmm..

I did read the thread and saw that you can't see the TV on the wall everyone suggested. I would face the sofa to the fireplace and put the chairs on either side of the FP facing each other. Put matching end tables and lamps on the FP side of the chairs. You need a larger rug that the sofa and chair legs can sit on to pull the seating into a conversation group. There is a little bit of a sense of clutter in one corner. I might remove the etagere from the room, thereby removing the clutter it contributes with the stacked books. Put the small table on that wall with a small lamp and some framed photos. There's possibly too many large lamps. I think I count three plus sconces and overhead lighting, but the placement is better in your new photos. I would also add a few larger pieces of art on the wall, table and/or mantel and bring some touches of red in. That will make the walls relate to the conversation group around the FP, which is the only place you have red.

Hello friends. I am afraid I need your help once again! We have finally settled on a new sofa, accent chairs and the place we are getting all of this from has agreed to also throw in a rug for us if I happen to like one from their suppliers. I fell in love with a rug they have as well as accent pillows I think will match well. We have also decided on the color of the accent chairs and the model of the sofa. My issue : I CANNOT decide on a sofa color!!! Everyone is telling me to do light grey but I am afraid it won't go with the rug I like. I am swayed towards a white sofa (it is more off white, I will post a picture of the swatch bellow) in order to flow with my chairs and everything else. I had spoken to the designer who did our plan and she said I can go with a white sofa no problem. Everyone is saying do light grey. I know I can pick another rug but I am SO In love with the one I have chosen and I think it will make the space... Can anyone advise me on what to do? I do like a light grey sofa but I also really like the colors in the rug...We have to order this week in order to make it in time for Christmas and I am very undecided. You have all been so helpful and if you aren't utterly sick of me, I would appreciate the advice! Sounds like you and hubby aren’t on the same page. Buying a table, without ability to return is red flag to me. He bought that rug too without your involvement. The rug is wrong size and style. No photo of the table. But better sit down and talk about this and reach some compromises otherwise, these situations can fester and get ugly over time.

We agree with @Diana Bier on the suggestion to add curtains which would definitely add to a formal living room setting. @user01 l We've made you a layout (approx dimensions) for a formal living room. Center the sofa on the wall and put the chair at the end of the peninsula, facing the sofa.

You might like to edit your photos down so they only fill one of the shelves and leave the others for decor items that add some colour.

You could add a framed cork board on one side of the tv for a cute place for your daughter to rotate out her art and a small white bookshelf on the other side for her books.

Your beautiful space really needs lamps so that you can turn off the harsh overhead lighting. Everything looks very " glarey" otherwise. Your colors look great together.

Lindsey had a great idea to leave sofa where it is but center it on the wall. That would look nice too.

Center the sofa on its wall so it isn't crushing the drapes and the chaise is entirely on the rug. Just a foot of rug sticking out on each side of the whole sofa is the idea. I would paint the TV area the same dark blue/gray so the TV would not be so prominent and your shelves and decor items will pop. Get a pair of skinny Asian stools that will slip under the peninsula/bar, and move the chair to the other end of the rug - entirely on it. If it isn't a swivel, consider mounting a swivel mechanism under it so it can rotate from TV watching to conversing with the sofa occupants. Art hung 5" above the sofa back can be as wide as 75% of the sofa's width. Where are your wall outlets for lamps?

Deco- I have receptacles pretty much everywhere on the back wall, under the window and under the island as well. Thank you for the measurement tips as well! Do you think a large rectangular white/off white mirror would look good above the centered couch? I’ve had my eye on something like this. ..

And just a thought...some throw pillows in another color other than the wall would really make it pop. Is your wall color gray with some blue in it?

Yep that’s the color basically! The opposite walls in the living room are a lighter shade of that color family.. what color do you think? My only go to color is white!

- Overall: 26" wide x 53.5" high x 2" deep
- Mirror Only: 21" wide x 48.5" high
- Weight: 27 pounds
- I'm estimating your sofa at 84 inches wide.
- At 53.3 inches long, that mirror is pretty big, but I think it is too small to be the only thing on the wall. And at 26 inches high, it's going to look even smaller. Cut a piece of paper to those dimensions and tape it to the wall with some painter's tape.
- My choice for that wall would be a large canvas that is about 3/4 the width of your sofa.

Ok I will do just that!! I’m gonna get to rearranging furniture tonight.
Jaime here are the colors!! The entire house was agreeable gray from the builder. I used storm cloud on the accent wall and the other few walls are northstar. I don’t know if you can see the sunroom off of the living room, but that’s my daughters playroom and I used krypton in there.
They are all the same family.. sherwin Williams infinity paint! I swear by it. My fav!

You've done a great job, now the room just needs some fine tuning.

Move the sectional slightly to the left so it's not squished up against the drapery panels.

Move the chair out and place a small round accent drum table next to the chair

Replace the end table with a floor lamp for reading and ambiance

Mount a large canvas on the blue wall for contrast.

Add a glass top coffee table.

Select dark contrasting drapery panels for the windows. See below.

Maybe something like these selections for the windows.

I would have selected a floating media cabinet for the TV like this one below from Wayfair.

In the meantime, I have painted this wall the same color as the other side of the room and lined up the picture ledges.

Maybe I am OCD, but I would put a little somethin' somethin' above the TV to help the brain read left to right. Love your color scheme!

I agree that a colorful canvas over the sofa would be the best. Something with an additionL color other than your wall colors. Can’t wait to see!!

C Renee, what do you think so far?! I got the 4 pillows and lamp at marshalls. I’m still trying to find something I like for the wall, but I’m already so much happier moving the couch! I’m so thankful for all the advice on here!
It’s too late now bc I spent a ton on the rug but should I have gotten a bigger rug for the space? Just so I know lol in case I happen to see a good deal one day!!

So glad you pulled the sectional away from the window wall. It looks so much better with room to breathe! Can the chair face the sectional to make it more of a conversation area?

Is there room for some stools at the counter? (I'm a big fan of island and peninsula seating.)

Add a lamp with a similar white shade to the side table.

Add a coffee table.

Put a big piece of art or a couple of medium pieces of art on the wall over the sectional at eye level.

The floor lamp is too small and too traditional in style for your other selections.

You have LARGE SCALE EVERYTHING. You can't then just come in with a 54" floor lamp for the room.

Here, none of these floor lamps below are expensive. The arc lamp is only $149 and is 80" tall. Buy a larger floor lamp.

And just for my own information, why would you take advice from a poster who doesn't like what you have already done in the room? She thinks you should change out your pillows and add colorful artwork when you already have a room that screams " I have been designed professionally"!! Don't doubt your abilities. This room is 50 x better than what is posted on this site, and probably 10 x better than the ability of most of the "Pros" on this site. Keep up the great work! B.

Perfect advice!! Yess!! The chair is in a swivel.. the table lamp is better than my idea lol I was gonna go to a different marshalls and see if I could find the same one for the other side.. but I do prefer a table lamp over that. I have been browsing coffee tables.. I’m going to build one next week:) what do you think of the color being a stain similar to the color of the floors? I’m staying away from a glass top table in here because my daughter is 3 and it will show every thing!!! And yesss.. browsing stools.. can’t seem to find anything I really like online yet! Thank you so much!

Beverly, I’m very open minded here! I’ve had so many thoughts on what I want to do but I just don’t know what actually works:) I appreciate everyone’s “thoughts” bc it’s helping me see all of my options. I’m looking at the lamp you showed me the other day I can’t believe I didn’t realize it was that much bigger!!! I swear this lamp was huge when I was in the store! And thank you so very much for your compliments on my room:) I’m trying! Ive been here for almost 5 months and I feel like I’ve barely made progress. I’ve been so hesitant to spend online because I haven’t been confident it will look right. You have given me a much better direction!

I love the accent wall. Your couch is definitely too big for the space. Normally I would suggest that you change the swing of the couch but because it would be right up against your peninsula I'd leave it the way it is. You have the right idea to add a chair but again it just feels tight because the couch is too big. Your shelving feels a little busy. This can be easy fixed! By putting the shelves all the way against the wall (on the sides) it gives the illusion that there's not enough space for them. Also, you've over loaded every shelf, so it's a bit heavy on the eyes. One of the best tips I could give you is texture and layering. You never want everything on the shelf to be the same, whether the same type of object or the same height or the same color. You can add visual texture by picking objects that are different. Ex: a small green plant next to a large silver picture frame, next to a medium sized white box.

That's a pretty wall color. I think the chair makes it look a little crowded. Consider using the chair in another room and bringing the couch away from the curtain so you give it some room to breathe. Add framed art with some color above the couch, with a width about 3/4 of the width of the couch. Maybe get a couple of counter stools so you can use the counter. There's not a lot of color in the room; try getting a couple of pillows in coordinating colors and with some texture to add some visual interest. (Maybe light blue to bring in the light color on the wall with the TV.) And, how about a coffee table? Your daughter's artwork is beautiful; consider getting a few frames for her art and you can rotate it out as she creates new masterpieces. Then you honor her and the living room still looks grown-up. Have fun!
