I need help decorating my living room!
Comments (20)avesmor - thanks so much for your detailed response. I'll talk to DH about the rug! In the last photos the chair is facing the tv and I agree that this set up works better. The ottoman takes up a lot of room and we really don't use it so maybe that will find another room to live in. I can't keep any plants alive either (not even cacti survive my erratic over and under watering!) but maybe I'll look into getting some plants there. I have my eye on a large antique green glass fishing ball, and I might bring the color in that way. Bronze or metal sculptures are a great idea and I really like Allison's bookends. We have horse property (no horses yet) and a rustic ranch style house so that's more of our style. I'm going to keep my eye out for these during my flea market/antique shopping. Unfortunately, the sofa can't go back farther to accomodate the fireplace or even be turned toward it because there are walkways right behind both couches that connect the great room, the living room and the dining room. The footprint of this house doesn't work well so I'm a bit limited with furniture placement. It's an older house that's been added onto over time without any great master plan in mind! Our front doors used to open right into the great room so we included a foyer in our addition to address that, but it would have been just too much money if we were to change the whole footprint of the house. As an afterthought I wondered if we should have put the entertainment wall right next to the fireplace, which would have been much better for seating, but we would have lost a lot of light if we eliminated the large window. The fireplace isn't done yet and it's just a bit of a dumping ground right now! Nothing except maybe the floor candles will stay. I may try a mirror but it could just reflect the pillar between the couches. I like the idea of a basket with kindling although we are going to install the gas logs (my house smells like a campfire for days after a real wood fire, for some reason). We don't need window coverings for privacy reasons, but I was thinking about using linen panels - until we installed the trim. Now that I see the craftsman style details on top of the windows that I love so much I'm having a change of heart about covering them. The media unit does come in separate pieces but the three sections aren't intended to be separated. The crown molding on top of each section fits together like a puzzle and the sides of the bases are constructed in a way that you can clearly see each is meant to be connected to the other. Maybe we could put something on each side of the unit like plants or sculpture to break up the wood instead. Whew - that was a lot of detail - thank you!...See MoreHelp decorating living rooom
Comments (3)You're saying the paint, carpet, and sofa aren't changing and you want help with accessories & colors, etc. I hate to say it, but the three main anchors in the room are fighting with each other (colors) and it's hard to recommend other colors when they're not working together. I can totally understand not replacing a sofa or carpet and I can understand not wanting to repaint for a variety of reasons, but this is where I would make a change. Your carpet is boss and if you want to stay neutral you're going to need something with the same pink undertone. I have the same brown/tan carpet with a pink undertone (as do many people in the world with 'neutral' carpet and tiles, etc.) throughout a large part of my house. Look at BM Muslin, BM Shaker Beige, or BM Patience. Your sofa is reading green on my monitor, but you say it's blue. I'd start by changing the wall color and work to add more blue and cream to the room. Do you have any inspiration photos? Does your style lean traditional? Do you like patterns? Prefer solids? If you really don't want to paint the option would be to layer a pattern rug on top of the carpet and make sure it has all the colors in and just keep repeating the colors throughout the room to make it look more intentional....See Moremy living room
Comments (4)I'll suggest what I bought for mine: Target's cover. Might fit yours. 4 colors. https://www.target.com/p/cotton-duck-loveseat-slipcover-sure-fit/-/A-14319428#lnk=sametab&preselect=10363416...See MoreNew Home Design Ideas Needed
Comments (13)If the TV is going over the mantel I would put the couch facing it. It's ridiculous to have couches on either side where you can't comfortably view the TV. With your light furniture I would suggest a large and colorful oriental rug in medium tones to bridge the dark floor with the light furniture. If everything is pale and modern this large room may seem cold. For the same reason I would choose drapes on the windows in shades close to the wall color, although you can incorporate a shade from the rug in a subtle pattern. I like the chairs and sofa you've selected. You might even have room for a love seat to fill that space. The love seat could be the same style as the sofa since you have a different style for the chairs. Rather than ceiling lighting I would have plenty of floor and table lamps which are much warmer in tone, and actually give better lighting than overhead lights. I would have a glass and metal rectangular coffee table with a second glass shelf near the bottom to store books, magazines, remote controls, etc. With a beautiful rug it's really nice to have a glass surface. You seem to have plenty of wall space for art and perhaps also bookcases or something like an antique high secretary that has glass doors. Mine has books and antique Chinese porcelain. Once you have the carpet and main seating pieces the rest should be easier. I would choose lamp tables that don't match but the lamps can match or at least be of equal height with similar shades. Blue and white porcelain Chinese type lamps would be stunning....See MorePatricia
