Artificial greenery, pottery....top of kitchen cabs?

Happy New Year all you "decor divas"!!! Is it necessary or "proper" to decorate the tops of my kitchen cabinets? Since we have 9ft. ceilings there is quite a bit of space up there but don't know what to do with it. I have seen basket collections, fake plants, pottery, junk......I kind of like the "primitive" stuff....HELP please!!!

Do you like that look? When you say primitive, what sort of things did you have in mind? I think most cabinet toppers fail because they're too small, too cluttered, and not in proportion to the space.

What sorts of things do you have in the rest of your kitchen?

Also, how easy will it be for you to get up there to dust everything on a regular basis?

We are on what is a good-sized urban lot in the San Francisco Bay Area. The house is laid out on an east/west axis but took absolutely no advantage of being halfway up the hill with an unobstructed eastern hillside view. Despite being in the middle of the city, no one can see inside our windows. We remodeled from two tiny windows placed so that you couldn't see out of them without straining, to this new configuration. There are now five picture windows across the entire back of the house (3 above the counters, 2 above those), rising up to a vaulted ceiling. With an open plan for the LR, DR and kitchen, I no longer have to use any artificial lighting from an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset. Sometimes when I come up in the early morning, I just stand there and watch the dark blue night sky slowly turn sunrise colors across the clouds. It is spectacular, and everybody else is asleep so I just drink my first cup of coffee in absolute peace and beauty. I love how the light changes through the day, not just outside but inside. I lost some upper cab storage with these windows, but it was worth it. The hills turn spectacular colors, the sky is all shades of blue, the moonrises knock your socks off. Because our lot slopes downward, the patio and backyard is a full two stories below these windows. So I pay more attention to what this bed looks like from above, than what it looks like at ground level. The backyard extends another 80' with a second patio, but a large silver maple which is at the other end of that covered lanai, screens that area from the line of sight looking out from the house. We feel we get the best of both worlds. We live in a vibrant, exciting area with every convenience and full services nearby; a snug comfortable cottage with a gorgeous fully landscaped garden along with scenic views and natural light to die for. Wow! Thanks for all the beautiful pictures! CheriPatrice- You have some wonderful inspiration photos! Laughable- That's a nice kitchen, but those windows are lovely :) As for the wood/white cabinetry, I so appreciate all your input. I have not made a decision, but I am trying to find different examples, to make comparisons. I'm pretty set on white appliances and I like the idea of white backsplash tile, with some leaves or vines...and if I have wood cabinets, I would want white countertops. White cabinets, probably wood countertops. I know I want to use some blue and green accents with the yellow walls. I'd also like to include some reference to the brick, without being too heavy. As you might imagine, not a lot of pictures available, but I'm still looking. The only thing I don't like is wood floor with wood tone cabinets. It all seems to blend together, so either wood floor with painted cabinets or wood tone cabinets with a different floor. The lightness factor...that's big! I do want a kitchen that will bounce some light around, but not too white. Sometimes white can actually look gray, if there's not a lot of natural light. That's one of my concerns, too. My mom had white walls in her new kitchen, but they looked gray on cloudy days. She painted the walls a soft leaf green and it's beautiful. What light we do have in the kitchen is not really bright. We have the window over the sink (4' but could be a little wider) and the french doors to the sunroom...indirect light at best. The kitchen window faces southeast, so good morning light, but not much in the afternoon. One idea is to use the wood lower cabinets, with few uppers (mostly plate racks, open storage and a few glass doors or fabric...with only frames of the wood showing. This would lighten up the heaviness, associated with wood uppers and maybe paint the island green. The hutch would be lovely in blue...maybe tie in a few accent pieces too...a plate rack or the niche by the fridge. The table and chairs are also wood, but the chairs could be painted...and I'd like to have metal/wrought iron stools, at the island. Maybe tie it in with some wrought iron on some of the pendants or accessories. For hardware, antique brass and probably the same finish on the chandelier, over the table. I want it to feel like a country kitchen with a french spin, but as Beekeeperswife says, not too theme-y! LOL Now for the floor, I know it's totally 70s, but what about a vinyl floor that looks like brick? I love brick patios and I have some antique brick out in the garden...so I'd like to find something a little more rustic (less red) if possible. Still just an idea...but I'm kind of liking it! Sunroom...I'd like to paint it a soft aqua/blue, very light, to look good behind the plants and look like a warm, sky blue. We have that soft color, in the summer, on really warm days...and it's beautiful. I'd like to find a small settee and some comfy smaller chairs, for this space. Either wicker or small upholstered pieces. The little table and chairs would be more bistro style, maybe with some wrought iron for the base, wood top, iron chairs. Maybe back to vinyl 'wood' floors in this room...softer with the blue. Now, I'm totally digressing, but it's a slow day at work :) Any pictures, input, ideas? Don't be afraid to tell me what you really think...I may or may not agree with you, but it's good to get feedback. And L...the placement of the woodstove will partially be determined by whether we extend the upstairs part way over the sunroom. If we do, the pipe would still have to be tall, since I do know about the 10' rule. I have been talking to installers, but whether the stove is in the middle of the wall or the corner, will be decided by what we do upstairs. There are advantages to the corner placement, but I lose a few windows...but that's the northwest side...so maybe not a big deal :)

Well, I'm of the opinion that it's totally OK to use good quality artificial greenery . . . if it's used in a setting where that plant could actually grow. Obviously, it would be extremely difficult to grow real plants in a tipped sideways basket, though (LOL). That said, I always think that your above cabinet spaces should reflect you and your interests and/or continue the look of the room. I do think that a few larger items grouped together look better than a lot of little things lined up "like ducks in a row". It's a great space to showcase your collections, if they'll work with the rest of your kitchen decor. My own home here in New Mexico is a Contemporary Hacienda style home, with Spanish Colonial and Southwestern art, furniture and accessories. Bright Talavera-type pottery and santos (statues of saints and angels) are two of the things I like and collect and so I've used these types of things above my own cabs. BTW, I also have built-in lighting up there so that this area is lit in the evenings. But . . . my laundry room is out of the public eye and I've turned it into my little refuge filled with childhood memories from our summerhouse on Lake St.Clair outside Windsor. If my home and kitchen were of a different style, I would have used them in my kitchen instead. Above the cabs in my laundry room, I've got my inherited collection of Cottageware pieces displayed. Many are too small to look good sitting on their own above any cab, so I've put the smaller ones up on old cake pedestals, a cottage-y shelf and even a rustic doll chair. It's my solution of how lift up and showcase my smaller pieces. As you can see, I also like propping framed art up above my cabs. This wonderful retro-looking clothespin bag, like the one my mom used, hangs on another short wall and continues the cottage look. That and other chilhood memorabilia helps my Cottageware work in this room: Anyhoo, you can take any of these ideas here on this thread and apply them to fit you and your kitchen; your interests and/or your collections. Dcward - I like it with the Banana Cream. I agree that it looks dark in that last photo. The door trim will be white, and on the left there will be a full-height (white) pantry cabinet. On the right, there are (white) uppers & lowers, so, on that back wall, in terms of square feet painted wall space, it's not very much at all. So, between the window, can lights, UCL & white cabinets... well... we'll see. A few photos in different lighting with the Banana Cream: It is a very earthy, neutral pallet. Even the Banana Cream, while yellow, is light & soft enough that it feels like it all works together to me.

Pottery yes, artificial greenery, no.

The things that look most natural on top of cabinets would be things you would put on a shelf or "store" there anyway. Large things, big enough to see properly and make a statement.

If a real plant would actually grow up there...meaning it would get enough light to thrive: maybe. If something real up there would be dead in a month due to lack of light, it won't look "natural".

Since you like primitive, I would go with baskets with different textures, pottery in the range of colors you like, and light and dark wood carvings all of course in a approporate size so you dont need too too many objects, otherwise it looks cluttered.

It's not necessary at all; I find that when there is too much up there, it draws the eye to another layer of ornamentation. I think there is usually enough going on at counter level in kitchens so that leaving the tops empty is good.

ideefixe- I agree about the "too small and too cluttered", I guess an example of "primitive" would be, baskets, pottery, some vintage signs, etc.

cyn427- I am short anyway so I drag a stool around with me, that would be ok :)

palimpsest- I'm picturing just a few substantial things without all those "little collections" and yes, NO FAKE PLANTS!!

roseabbey- I like your idea and keeping it uncluttered would be my biggest concern.

mitchdesi- We have been in our house for about 10 months and it wasn't until I took all my Christmas stuff down that I started thinking about decorating above the cabinets. My biggest concern is it will look too cluttered so we shall see what I can come up with. Always fun to think about :)

Ayup. Crockery would be fine...one can take that down and run it through the dishwasher. Fake plants are SERIOUS dust/grease-catchers...particularly in a kitchen.

I am so glad you asked this question. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do above my cabinets. I am not feeling the love on the couple of cookie jars I have tried up there. I like the idea of the baskets. Those are some great inspiration pics jeannine!

I think I have a bunch of baskets in the attic. I wonder how they would look spray painted and if I could get paint to match the fiestaware I just got for christmas.

Just remembered that the link might not be allowed. Here are a few pics...hope these show up.

I used to store serving pieces up there, but I hated all the clutter. I wound up adding shelves to my pantry/laundry room and then putting little puck lights I got from Ikea up there.

LOL, twotogo. I am short also, which is why I asked. I avoid putting things higher than I can reach when I'm on a stool and cabinet tops qualify. I used to think nothing of climbing onto counters, but no more.

Chinese ginger jars, korean celadon, imari, english plates, etc look nice.
Anything except fake greenery!

Glad we had this conversation---I finally climbed up there and took down the last of the greenery I had as a backdrop to other items on the cabinet top (sort of ashamed to say I still had it). Whew, I feel so much better. Nothing like the new year to make one feel the need to get the house refreshed and off to a new start.
Now just a couple of large trays, baskets and pottery---I really do need the cabinet top for the storage of those big things!
