DH steals kitchen TV when he has media room! Grr LOL

Ok, this is sooooo not right LOL.

When building our new house (that we moved back in Aug 30th), I "insisted" on having a kitchen TV because I was sick and tired of missing the end of TV shows when I went to make supper (we have no other TV except the media room). DH poo poo'd the idea and was just a general grump (and I DO MEAN GRUMP) about the whole thing.

Fast forward, 19" LCD comes via UPS, DH happens to be at the build at the time...and before I even get home he's already unpackaged it and bought the cable cord. (I should have known something was up huh?)

HOW DO I GET MY DH OUT OF MY KITCHEN???? LOL

We have a media room in the basement, complete with leather puffy recliner chairs! Why in god's name does he want to watch TV in my kitchen???? Get out dammit, it's MINE! lol.

My kitchen is 15' x 15' and that TV was to be the backup FOR ME because DH does not like to watch the same shows as I do.

Who'd a thunk I made my kitchen so comfy even DH enjoys it (someone who NEVER cooks!), and is now hogging my TV!

And Men say Women are hard to understand? pffffffft

Grumpy Gus needs to get his behind in the basement lol. Any ideas?

Um... Does the TV have a parental lockout? You could put your own code in it so that only you can choose the channels. Or, if DH is watching his shows in the kitchen, just take yourself on down to the puffy comfy media room and watch what you like. Tell him to call you when dinner's ready :)

But really, if it were me, I'd like it that DH wanted to stay in the nice kitchen with me even if he wanted to watch his shows too. So get him one of those little portables with an earphone and let him help with the prep while he watches :)

You probably won't, no one likes to be alone in the basement (well, almost no one), even with a wonderful media center.

The kitchen is usually the center of activities in a home - because that's where you are. When my kids are visiting, they all hang out in the kitchen, at the table or the counter.

I agree, get him a little TV all his own (or get yourself a little one and set it up in another part of the kitchen), and give him a scratch on the head and a kiss every now and then because he wants to hang out with you. It's quite a compliment.

I have a friend who used to do that, and she still turns it on as soon as she gets up, and can't fall asleep without it. I noticed it when she stayed with me for a few days and wanted *my* TV on all the time...drove me nuts, and when I asked her, she said the same thing your hubby did - it's the noise, not the actual TV. With her, I just told her I thought it was unhealthy, and that I couldn't stand having it on at my place all the time, though I didn't care what she did at her own place. So while she was there, whenever we weren't watching something and she turned it on, I just turned it off (reflexively). LOL We're pretty close friends - she realized what a problem it was when she had to keep turning it back on (and was really "aware" of it for the first time), and has been working on it since then, or so she says. My MIL does the same thing - no talking to her though. She's having a *really* hard time understanding why DH and I opted *not* to have cable TV...she can't imagine how anyone could live with just the 5 stations we get with our antenna. I'm just glad I don't have to live with that...luckily, her son sees it for the "noise" it is, and doesn't have that problem. I'm kind of suprised you didn't notice it before though - my DH and I just got married after dating for around 7 yrs as well (living apart), and by the time we got married, we'd spent enough time at each other's places that I was pretty used to his habits already, good and not-so-great. ;-) Can you ask your DH if he'd be willing to try the radio instead of the TV during the morning/day? It's still noise, but at least it might be easier for *you* to put up with instead of the TV all the time...might be a decent compromise if he'll agree to it. Probably not much chance of changing that particular behavior though if he's been doing it so long and you've already talked to him. Sorry...

Everyone, thanks for the encouraging words. Gigi, you are in luck. I am in Palo Alto. My stone fabricator is in Redwood City. I am out of town this next week but when I get back I will figure out what we are using to create the side tables. Assuming he hasn't already tossed the tv cutout, we will use that and then the entire rest of the slab is yours. If he has tossed the tv cutout already, I may still need a piece of it, but I will get back to you about the rest. It has a crack all the way from top to bottom (why it was so cheap) but its close to the edge where we cut it so depending on how much you need, it may not be a problem. As for the dog, she is very cute and dear to us, but you probably don't want her because she is quite the lemon from a health perspective. Fortunately for her, she hit the doggie lotto when I adopted her from a rescue. Another pic of her snoozing (wearing DH's sunglasses) with her head on my pillow!

Wonderful ideas - thank you! Love the Man Shed... maybe I can move James and his tv out to a Man Treehouse or a Man Shed? lol. Once he took his coke and pretzels and went and sat in his car when I had the girls over. No one knew where he went. He's a good boy :) It was terribly pathetic to see him sitting there all alone, but very loving :) He's not a sports fan, thankfully and there is already a fridge down there - we're more than halfway there :) I agree about lamps and fuzzy rugs. The fabric is a great idea - I wonder if I can drape it at the ceiling to create a softer ceiling than just floor joists and tons of pipes, wires, ducts etc. Luckily all the walls are either drywalled (not well, but it's something) or concrete bricks. you guys are the best - thanks for all your help!

cactuskatie, What a great post! I have the same concerns you mentioned, except that our TV will go in the great room, which is not a media room only, and doesn't have the space constraints. I completely agree with the points that have already been mentioned: (1) If the room is a media room, then it would be fine to have the television in a piece of open furniture, versus an armoire. Hiding the television away is more of a concern in other rooms. (2) The pieces of furniture you posted are beautiful. (3) Given the size of the room, you may wish to purchase a bit smaller TV, so check the guidelines for viewing distance, etc. The same is true of the furniture, if it is too much in a small space. The armoire would likely be too large in the room and leave you with less versatility in arranging the furniture now and in the future. ********************* The furniture pieces you posted are just beautiful. Can you please please share the source? We are looking for something like the armoire in #1 because the room we'll have the TV in is not for media purposes only. So we'd like to be able to tuck away the television in a piece of traditional looking furniture. However it has been a total challenge finding anything that #1 houses a large 50" television, and #2 is traditional looking like the rest of our house, versus modern/contemporary. Jan

My husband loves our basement and I can't figure out why - it's not nice (well, none of our house is). I vote for the parental locks or just make him do all the cooking and cleaning and take his tv and put it in another room for you to watch or go in his room while he's cooking/cleaning.

I don't understand all the tv technology but I can tell you what works for us. TIVO. We have two of them, one for me and one for him. We have a large tv in the living room and if we don't want to watch the same show (kitchen and decorating, him shoot em ups), he sets the tv to" picture in picture", meaning we get 1/2 a screen of my show and 1/2 for him. I have headphones that are wireless so I can hear my show and sit right next to him on the couch, and he listens to his. I can also walk into the kitchen with my headphones and watch what is on my TIVO. Tivo lets you record like a vcr on a hard drive inside the tv, and you can watch whenever you want. That's what works for us, I hope that makes sense.

I'm sure it's frustrating but I do agree, having him want to be around you is more important than ANY tv show. Enjoy.
