Fantastic melon recipe from my grocery store...

I found this recipe on the back of their weekly sales circular and made it for a party I attended on the 5th.

I had to make some changes to it based on expediency and the fact that the one guy didn't like one of the ingredients. I also added an ingredient...

The basic recipe is:

Â 2 avocados, pitted and peeled and cut into 1/2-inch chunks

Â 2 limes, juiced

Â 1/2 red onion, peeled and thinly sliced

Â 1-2 lbs watermelon, seeded and cut into 1-inch chunks

Â 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Â 1/2 bunch cilantro

Â Kosher salt and pepper to taste

Â Add all the above ingredients

You chunk the avocado and toss it in the lime juice to keep it from browning.

Then you add everything else and toss.

It's very simple, and it is EXCELLENT. My friends raved over it.

The changes I made were to substitute Vidalia onion in place of red onion. I forgot to pick up a red onion and I wasn't going back to the store.

Replaced the cilantro with mint. My friend Jim HATES cilantro with a passion. What a cretin.

I ADDED about 4 ounces of proscuitto ham cut into small strips. I tried the salad before and after, and the proscuitto really took the flavor to the next level.

All in all, a very successful and very easy salad to make and VERY refreshing on a hot summer day.

God only knows. Almost all watermelons sold in stores are hybrids and will not reproduce "true to type", so you could get anything. Several years ago, before I knew about this, I saved some Yellow Doll seeds and planted them the next year. I got some yellow fleshed watermelons but they definitely were not as good as the one I bought the year before. Since then I have been buying only open-pollenated heirloom varieties, which I would strongly recommend. Recommended varieties: Black Diamond Yellow Flesh Moon and Stars Moon and Stars Yellow Orangeglow Desert King Klondike and if you want to grow a really big one, Carolina Cross. Wayne

It depends on your attitude. If you are trying to save money and are depending on your gardening to supply your table, this is probably not worthwhile. But if you have a childish interest in these things, as I do, it is well worth experimenting with. What can you lose? It's cheap entertainment. Heck, a movie ticket costs $8.00 and the movie is over in a couple of hours. And it probably wasn't very good (personal bias). Dry the seeds. Then sometime later do a germination test by wrapping a few seeds in a moist paper towel and putting that in a closed container on top of the fridge. Check on it once in awhile. If the seeds germinate, try growing some. You won't know until they fruit if you have something good. It's an adventure all the way. Jim

If there is any difference between the two varieties, then it is likely hybrid, you just do not realize it. It is very hard to tell anyhow. I believe most of the vegetables, like toms, beans, peppers, and many many others are hybrids. The production is so high. Growers can't make $ if they grow the low yield heirlooms. With this, sometimes the difference is small, sometimes it is big.... To a lot of people, we probably do not even care. I still have many named variety seeds. But sweet pepper is just sweet pepper....

Susan, I have planted dry grocery store beans several times. Most grew fine and all were bush type beans. I'm assuming all are mechanically harvested which pretty much requires bush type growth. You may want to overplant and then thin if all the seeds germinate. I've had great success. However, there are no requirements for minimum germination percentages for store beans as there are for garden seeds. So your results may vary. Mayocoba dried beans are a favorite of my daughter, too. She lives several states away. I bring mayacobas from a local grower when we visit. They do not sell old beans...at least not under their name, which may be part of the reason she likes theirs so much. She has even asked for their mayocobas as Christmas presents :) She says it is about the only bean variety she can not buy at stores near her.

Sounds excellent! I have a church picnic to go to in about 2 weeks and was just going to take cut up watermelon, but now I think I'll "kick it up a notch" as Emeril would say.. Thanks for the recipe!

Oh yum! I was just looking at a watermelon/cucumber recipe and thinking....hmmmm but this sounds better....might add cucumber though!

I agree, the combo of cilantro and watermelon sounds delicious, if I'm lucky enough to find good avacados and good melon simultaneously, this is on the menu!

I forgot to add this recipe my daughter wanted for her party. The girls wanted something "healthy and refreshing" to also go with all the "unhealthy type food."

CUCUMBER AND WATERMELON SALAD FROM EVERY DAY FOOD

INGREDIENTS

3 cups peeled and cubed european cucumber
3 cups cubed watermelon
3 tablespoons lime juice

optional
pepper and salt to taste

combine the cucumber, watermelon and lime juice. If not serving right away add salt and pepper if desired just before serving.

My changes. I leave out the salt and just add pepper. This tastes wonderful served over sherbet or vanilla ice cream as well. My daughter likes to make one as is without any salt and another bowl without salt but she adds a sprinkle of white wine to the salad just before serving.

I pull out my big ol injector for an alcohol filled watermelon. I just fill the injector (like a big syringe) and fill it with vodka. Then injuect the watermelon all over. Yuuuummm!
