Cocktail sauce recipe - looking for out of the ordinary

I bought a pound of Gulf shrimp (already steamed) and a couple pounds of Snow Crab to pick on as part of dinner tonight, and I am looking for a "different" sort of sauce to dip them in. I can always make a typical ketchup/horseradish or remoulade but I am looking for either something different or a great twist on one of them..... suggestions?

Have you ever tried adding Old Bay Seasoning to your basic cocktail sauce? I used the "blackened" OB Seasoning.

This recipe has been posted here before. It has the ingredients you mention and is suitable for boiling water bath. Ellie Topp's Quick Apple Cranberry Chutney recipe for canning is similar to Zabby's but actually contains a much higher proportion of onion and pepper relative to the amount of cranberries, and less apple. Zabby's has a little less vinegar, but since the pH of cranberry juice is pretty similar to vinegar, I think Zabby's recipe is roughly equivalent to Ellie Topp's. Bullmastiff, here's a cranberry conserve recipe with nuts from the Ball Blue Book. I don't see why you couldn't leave out the raisins, and use the juice of one orange instead of the whole thing, since cranberries have enough natural pectin to set on their own. I would feel fine adding an apple since you're working so low in the pH range with those cranberries, but I can't find a comparable recipe with apples and nuts (the Nutty Plum Conserve has a higher proportion of nuts but is acidified with bottled lemon juice). Cranberry Conserve 1 orange (unpeeled), seeded and finely chopped 2 c water 4 c cranberries 1/2 c raisins 3 c granulated sugar 1/2 c chopped nuts Combine orange and water and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat, partially cover, and boil until peel is tender, about 5 minutes. Add cranberries, raisins, and sugar, stirring until sugar dissolves. Return to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently. Boil hard until mixture thickens, 10-15 minutes. Stir in nuts and cook, stirring constantly, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and test gel. Skim foam and pack into hot half-pint jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Process 15 minutes in BWB. This could be too late for you for Father's Day, but I googled up your ingredients and came up with this. Basic Tomato BBQ Sauce 1 regular can of tomato sauce 1 can of tomato paste 2 tablespoons vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons brown sugar 3 cloves garlic, crushed 4 tablespoons onion, minced 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1 teaspoon cayenne fresh ground pepper to taste Cook the garlic and onion until it's soft, and then add all the rest of the ingredients. Simmer on low for 20-30 minutes. Keep stirring it often so it doesn't burn, then refrigerate for a few days before you use it. This allows the flavors to blend and mellow. I never make the traditional tarter sauce but there are two sauces I use that really good. One is for fish, such as salmon and salmon patties and the other is for on the Pacific Rim Chicken Burgers. For fish: Cucumber Dill Sauce for Fish (Great with salmon or trout filets.) 1 cucumber; unpeeled 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon dill (if fresh use 1 tablespoon) 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice salt and pepper to taste Cut cucumber in half and scoop out the seeds. Shred cucumber finely (or pulse in the food processor) and drain; combine with remaining ingredients. Chill to combine flavors. Serve with your favorite grilled or baked fish. Also good with salmon patties or crab cakes. Sharon - only the smoked paprika one showed on the link... it sounds good, but what is the one below it?

And T - thanks, but I DESPISE Old Bay. Reminds me of the hygenically challenged old pervert men in the fish markets in Philadelphia. YUCK!!!

LOL - you are kidding! Try another blackened seasoning in place of it!

And speaking of Philly - I think I've mentioned my youngest brother lives there. Do you ever buy skate at the market? I have not had any for a number of years but I love it!

LOL! Nope, not kidding about Old Bay - funny how certain smells trigger certain memories! And yes - I will try another blackening spice

Old bay is mostly celery salt with a little red pepper thrown in...reminds me of someone who didn't cook but for steaks and burgers on the grill and a few veggies in the micro....the veggies were seasoned with Old bay and the meat with Montreal Steak Seasoning. once went to a fancy steak house and he sent the steak back because it didn't taste like anything....LOL! It tasted like good beef!

Try a little aoli for the seafood...unless it's too similar to remoulade for you.

The spelling is aioli. And it's main ingredient is garlic whereas remoulade does not even include garlic. "All i oli" literally translates to garlic and oil. Not similar at all in my opinion.

Sorry about the spelling...but both are mayo based....thought perhaps shew as seeking something more teriyaki-ish.

I know I've posted this one several times over the years, but I do love this salad and especially the sauce. I use pink grapefruit when I can get it.

SHRIMP SALAD WITH GRAPEFRUIT

Serves 4

1 lg French lettuce
16 lg Jumbo Shrimp
2 lg Grapefruit

For dressing:
1/4 c Orange juice
1/8 c Vinegar
1/4 c Olive oil
1/8 c Corn oil
1/4 c Green olives chopped
1/4 c Onion chopped
1/4 c Parsley chopped
1 t Cayenne pepper
1 t Paprika
Salt and pepper

Cook the shrimps as usual, peel them. Peel the
grapefruit and separate each piece, also peel the
white skin, being careful to get the complete pieces.
Prepare the dressing by mixing all the ingredients.

To serve: put the lettuce leaves on the dish, adorn with the grapefruit and shrimp.

Put the dressing on top and serve.

This salad will be better if the dressing can be prepared two hours before.

Ok,l probably late with this AND it is a more traditional cocktail sauce with a twist. Maybe not what you are looking for but someone else might want to try it...everyone LOVES this....

Measurements are approximate.

Ketchup (3/4 C)
Wasabi Sauce (Golds or Bookbinders) (1/4 C)
Juice of 2 limes
Splash of Worstershire
Splash of hot sauce
Splash of seasoned rice vinegar
Splash of vodka (optional)
Chopped cilantro (2 T.) - or basil (optional)

Mix and serve with shrimp.

Remoulade sauce doesn't contain garlic? Mine does.

The original French remoulade does not contain garlic. It's actually pretty tame. But the American/Creole version popular in Louisiana contains garlic, hot sauce and a host of other ingredients. It's the influence of African Americans on regional cooking.

Not trying to be a food snob here. I went to cooking schools in France and Italy 30 years ago. But I do like the Americanized versions of many foods I learned to cook in the three years I worked in European restaurants.

I see Sue posted one that has vodka. I have one that contains lime and a half cup of tequila........that would calm your boys down! LOL

Oh dear, Teresa, now you've gone and done it. You KNOW Alexa is going to want the recipe with half a cup of tequila, LOL.

The one with wasabi sounds really good to me, I don't like hot pepper heat as much, I'm kind of a wuss, but I love horseradish/wasabi heat, go figure.

SharonCB, that salad is going to be dinner tomorrow night when Elery gets here.

chase, that is one neat site, and the cucumber sauce sounds like something I'd really like too, thanks.

I've made aioli, but I've got to confess that I've never made or eaten a remoulade, at least not that I know of!
