Biodegradable packing peanuts - brown or green?
Comments (7)I know this is an old thread but for unrelated reasons, been thinking about this too. My answer - or my hypothesis anyway - is that 'dietary' (human diet) carbohydrates (sugars, pastas, some breads, etc) are mostly being lumped in as 'greens' even when they don't fit the strict C:N framework yard waste is generally looked at in. And I think that's because these starches and sugars are so easily digested that they cause a burst of microbial activity (who mostly bring their own nitrogen i.e. proteins to the party and reproduce like mad, get eaten, return their proteins to the pile as urea, etc). So even if pouring straight sugar onto your compost pile doesn't directly add any nitrogen, it acts more like a green. And if you look at the ways compost manuals talk about the C, it's focussed much more on the cellulose and lignin. The carbs we eat just behave differently (I think part of it is their relative solubility but out of my area of expertise). Or in a dietary comparison: the 'starches' are not the relevant C, but the dietary fibre - the parts human digestive systems mostly can't directly break down, that's the analogue to the 'compost C.' Let's call it compost fibre, since it's not so much the elemental C that impacts how different materials act in a normal compost pile. Caveats: some foods like breads do have more protein in them than we tend to think. It'll depend on what the 'biodegradable things' are actually made of. A search for potassium bicarbonate, which is the same as the GreenCure product, brings up several companies selling it much cheaper; a pound for under $10.00. Comments (27)I got my 35 GG's (18-24" in quarts, they were all 30" tall above the pot!) from the Botany Shop. Not a bad thing to say about them at all.(The trees or the Botany Shop. LOL) I got some of their "Nanjing Beauties" in peat pots, as a test, and they all died, but then I didn't expect them to survive as soon as I saw them. They were bronzed badly right out of the box. I may try again, as they are very interesting trees to look at in the pics. My GG's are all doing very well. I planted them after 3 weeks in the garage when the frosts finally let up, in sandy clay with Osmocote 14-14-14 on half as recommended by the Shop, and the other half I used evergreen plant stakes. I guess I wasted my money on the Plant stakes, after doing some reading here, but they are all doing great, with 6" inches so far in the last month alone, and all are starting to spread out. Comments (15)A couple of years ago I was able to sit outside more and experiment with the jays. I would select peanuts that were to me of similar size and shape. The jays would examine two or three, never four or more, before taking one away to bury it. I would add weight to one peanut of similar appearance and after examination they would take away the heaver one. This I repeated many times. I tried painting Some with a pink felt point. They would take the unpainted peanuts first and come back for the painted ones. Perhaps I can try coloring an almond brown....See More- 18 years ago
