hook up gas dryer Siemens Ebay

good morning everyone!

we received our airelkin Ebay Siemens 8400 w/gas dry yesterday; so that's eight days from "buy-it-now". Truck had lift gate as i had requested both through "comments to seller" on paypal and the shipper when they called for delivery schedule. Units arrived in fine shape, the driver helped DH carry into kitchen. No problems whatsoever with the transaction.

We are trying to precisely level the washer, that's a question for another post. The current frustration is hooking up the dryer.

(1) we are not clear whether we ought to have a (NG) regulator on the dryer or not (there is not an obvious regulator on either our HW tank or HW boiler/circulator furnace); and (2) our house has an unfamiliar connection attached to the ordinary 1/2" threaded supply line.

we bought the needed 1/8" NPT plugged tapping and the 3/8" pipe to flare adapter fitting, and have a new 3/8" flex gas line kit for the dryer. we could hook up the dryer according to the picture in the siemens manual, but for the crazy thing on the supply line.

the unfamiliar connection on the supply line appears to be a flare coupler which measures 7/8" at the threads, so probably is 3/4". It is really on there and won't loosen. we have some wd40 soaking on it. the plumbing supply house has said on two trips there this morning that they don't have a 3/4" coupler.

i just hate to blow the savings on the ebay set by hiring a plumber and especially hate waiting to next week, there's always the 50/50 chance the "expert" one finally gets in the house doesn't quite finish the job....

any thoughts on whether a regulator is needed, and thoughts on the unfamiliar coupler stuck on our supply line?

My personal opinion upon encountering such connections -- gas connections, especially -- is to not mess with it unless you know what you're doing. Mistakes with NG can be very bad and often don't become obvious until later. Your descripton indicates to me a level of inexperience that suggests caution.

I tend to agree with asolo in that if you are that unfamiliar with gas piping you may want to get a pro involved.

That being said, I can tell you a couple of things. There is no need for individual regulators in an NG system. The gas pressure is set at the house main.

As to the mystery fitting on your supply line, without actually seeing it I can only surmise that it is prbably either a 5/8 or 3/4 flare adapter. If you have a digital camera and would like to email me a pic I can possibly tell for sure.

What are you using to try and loosen the fitting? (I have found that WD works quite poorly as a loosening agent.) There is also the possibility that whoever installed the fitting may have used a hardening style pipe sealant which will complicate matters.

If you have the room a couple of large wrenches with cheaters (pipes slid over the wrenche handles to provide more leverage) will, usually, break things free. Make sure to use 2 wrenches, one to turn the fitting and one to stabalize the supply line.

I notice you don't mention a shut-off valve, I hope there is one or that you are going to provide one.

Please be careful and weigh your options fully. If you are not comfortable working with gas lines you probably should get a pro.

Nothing wrong with the gas line, it's your gas valve solenoid. It'a a $50.00 fix you can do yourself. I don't know your model number, but in most cases the coils are the same. If you have a panel underneath the dryer door, there are 2 clips you need to press and pull the panel down toward the floor, the burner is on the right of the cabinet. Just make sure the power and gas is turned off before replacing the coils, a philip head screw driver and a little patience will get you up and running in now time flat. My crappy old electric dryer finally died of lint poisoning... I am buying a gas washer for an extra $80 and spending about $100 to have gas connected to it. Our rates: Natural Gas Per Therm $1.22 Electricity Per kWh $0.12 winter $0.13 summer It just makes sense. In a gas dryer, all the gas heat energy is emitted at the source (the dryer) and is directly used to dry the clothes. For the electric the heat transfer is not direct and is less efficient. First natural gas or coal is burned to make the electricity, which is then has to be sent over transmission lines and finally converted back into heat in the dryer to dry clothes. Even if natural gas is more expensive than electric, the efficiency is so much higher that gas ends up being cheaper in the long run. But my main motivation is global warming concern. I figure even if I only save a minimum of $40 year, in about 5 years, I can achieve personal %75 reduction (see below) in my dryer CO2 emmisions for free! After that any additional $ and environmental savings are gravy. Another post is right that the future of electric generation with wind and solar is an important point. I think that the below I found on my local energy company website is actually a really good reference. From residential gas AND electric provider website: "Buy a gas dryer if possible. Â Gas dryers cost half as much to operate per load as electric dryers. Gas dryers cost $50 to $70 more to purchase, but the savings on operating costs are typically $40 to $90 per year at current gas and electric rates. I am curious about why you are changing the door. My current setup has the washer on the right, but it seems every FL pair is designed for washer on the left. I was planning on just swaping them, which has it's own issues as follows: 1) Water hookup - Should not be a problem for me since my water and in wall drain are very close to center between the current machines, so I anticipate the hoses reaching. 2) Gas Hookup - Currently behind dryer, but should not be a problem reaching with a longer hose. Since gas is relativly low pressure to start with a can not imagine a longer hose will create a problem. 3) Electric - Outlets are on the wall and near the center, next to water, so no problem here. 4) Dryer Vent - The Problem - I currently have a dryer hose snaking around behind the machine since the vent is directly behind my current machine, under 1 ft away. I would guess I have 5 or 6 ft of hose kinda doubled over back there. I also assume this is probably very inefficient. The vent goes into the basement and on a relativly long run to the side of the house, probably 25 ft and up out the wall. Keeping in mind the dryer is actually next to an exterior wall, but the owner/builder/someone wisely decided not to vent out the front of the house, pressumably for aesthetic reasons. My choices are to use a hose to my current vent hole, does this make it too long? How do I know if it is too long? Or I could chip out a tile and cut a hole in the floor for the vent hose and essentially shorten the current vent run by tapping into that. The final choice option that I see, and probably hardest is to run a new vent line into the garage (directly through the wall behind the dryer and route that to the front of the garage and go out the side of the garage in front of the house. This is not a desirable solution since the front of the garage is still the front of the home, just not venting right on to the front porch. Or I could reverse the door and use all my current hook ups. But I still can not reverse the washer door, so it is bound to be non-optimal. Any thoughts on the matter that you gave to the setup that led you to reverse the door would be appreciated!

Is this a secondary vent cover for gas dryer? Is this safe/normal?

I'd say it's fine. This hvac tech was probably tired of having to redo dryer vents for stacked dryers so he just asked the gc if he could put a "T" in the line. Still though it wouldn't be safe to just go ahead and hook the dryer vent up to the T. Another reason for it might be a clean out which is weird cause the cleanout might end up trapping more lint. I'd remove the cap once a year and make sure lint isn't accumulating in the pipe and tape it back on with foil tape. Just the fact that there's a grey conduit cap on an aluminum dryer vent means this wasn't really planned out well. Only a gc would think of that. HVAC guys don't carry around electrical conduit pipe caps.

thanks so much for the advice!

yep, we are inexperienced at gas plumbing. yep, there's a shut off. We are both engineers, and i used to write manuals, so tend to overload with description.

DH is able, but was less than willing that particular weekend, he was only fiddling with it because i was buried with laundry.we wanted to take off the unfamiliar flare adapter because the only open stores did not have either 5/8" or 3/4" we needed...........we knew we did not need a regulator because there aren't any anywhere else, but the Lowe's young fellow said to buy one...

we took the conservative option and now await the gas company to hook up. In our area, the gas company got out of inside work, but apparently customer outcry over contractor costs got them back in the business of appliance hook-ups. thank goodness for the budget break.

Is there a way to stop subject dryer from cycling for a few minutes indefinitely after the clothes are dry? I tried different modes but no success. I believe this feature is intended to stop wrinkles but it is a pain if you want to turn the dry on before bed and have it stop when the clothes are dry rather than it keep spinning all night long.

P.S. I don't have a model # handy but this is a late model machine purchased last year on Ebay from Airelkin.
