Sharon, I've been following these tutorials and want to thank you for the time you've put into them.

I even got on line and read the directions about how to turn the flash off on my camera. I did it. Twice. Now I've forgotten again, LOL.

Sharon, I am trying to fathom quail eggs for a reasonable price. I am lucky to be able to get them for free, I have seen them for sale for more then $1 a piece. They are a convenient size when baking as well when you think a recipe would benefit form a little more egg. I am sure all of the topics will help me and be of interest. I struggle with both those topics. Especially the artificial lights in the winter as al our meals are after dark. I am using a DSLR that my DH recently got me and these still apply. -Robin

Thanks Phyllis! Yes I have seen that idea as well as using a 5 gallon white plastic jug from laundry softener and cutting a hole, or a big white plastic basin. A lot of the success depends on the strength of the lamps you use outside to light up the inside of the container. And if you have a DSLR with a flash that can be tilted up towards the ceiling or behind, you can use an airline barf bag (excuse the term) slipped over the flash attachment to diffuse the light. I'm uploading these tutorials onto their own blog, at the rate one per week, with links to other interesting places and will also be adding some sections on using a DSLR: aperture and depth of field, understanding f stops, shutter speed, bracketing exposures and a little more. Sharon, while I haven't been posting directly to your photo tip threads, I've been following them avidly. I so appreciate all the effort you've gone to to explain in such an easy way so many aspects of taking good [better for some of us] pictures. The last week or so I've been very busy organizing and then hosting our family reunion at a local fancy diner and have not had a real chance to digest the latest installments. The macro stuff interests me very much. I've tried to use my macro recently and found when I did the camera refused to take the picture?? Odd. LOL.. I'll figure it out but I suspect I'll have to dig through the manual to see what the problem is. Your post makes me suspect it has something to do with the camera not being able to focus on what I'm trying to do or the distance, or something..heh.. and it won't fire as self preservation. Smiles. I'll figure it out and then be back to digest more of your post. Btw, I got a tripod for my birthday! Yay.. I relative I had staying with me for a while apparently absconded with my last tripod. Grrrr... Needless to say I'm looking forward to using the tripod to work on some of your 'lessons'. Thanks for all your great work on our behalf.

I have a problem with the camera I am using now in that I often accidentally set the flash because of where the toggle wheel is place. My camera looks very similar to yours, and I find it very easy to press the flash without realizing it. Sometimes it is difficult to turn off the automatic flash, and this is most irritating. Most of the photographing I do now is of furniture and of cardboard models of furniture that I make at work, and I really do not need a flash for this. In the past, I have photographed wall sconces for tear sheets and these were difficult because the finishes were often polished silver plate or polished nickel. I had to be very careful about what was reflected in the mirror finishes. Of course I had to be even more careful when I photographed mirrors, and I often did those on a dock with the background very far away, so that it would be blurred. Oh thank you Annie. I hope you will find them easy to follow.

To turn off your flash, find the flash menu....it has a lightening bolt icon. When you get that menu open, look for the icon that's a circle with the lightening bolt inside.
That's the indication that you don't want it to flash for any photos.

When you want to set the flash to go off again, set it to the lightening bolt icon in the flash menu....the one without the circle around it.

The AUTO sign which is found in the flash menu, means you leave it up to the camera to decide whether or not the picture will need flash, sometimes it will, other times it won't.

If you have an eye icon also in your flash menu, that is the red eye stopper. The camera will do a preflash or a fluttering, blinking light to make people's pupils close just before the main flash goes off, avoiding those red devil eyes that happen with flash photos.

What I love was you taking a picture of your camera set up!
Wondering if you do any special set up in restaurants?

No special setup when we go to eat Linda. I just take my smallest pocket point and shoot and click at the food from where we sit before eating.

Luckily our main meals are during the afternoon so there's always daylight for photos when we dine at an outdoor restaurant.

When I do restaurant reviews I still use one of the little cameras with no tripod.
The reviews aren't paid assignments but are done as a favour for the restaurant and for posting on a friend's Tenerife golfing blog.
