Need help figuring out undercabinet lights

I posted this question on the kitchen forum, but am desperate for a quick answer so I thought I'd post it here.

We are purchasing linkable undercabinet lights for our kitchen cabinets, but don't know how to figure out how many feet are necessary.

The longest run of cabinets is 6' on each side of an L-shape. How far in from the outside end of cabinets should the lights begin? At the inside corner, how far should the lights extend?

The distance between the range vent hood and refrigerator is exactly 2 feet. My choices for that area is 8" or 16". What length is necessary?

I really don't want an "over-kill" of lights..just the minimum will do.

Thanks in advance for those who answer and enlighten us.
