$100 and two days of hard labor later, my 70s laminate cabinets are history.

Walls are BM Sag Harbor Gray, cabinets are BM Wedgewood Gray (less pastel in real life than in the photo).

OMG!!! I had posted some pics for you on your original thread and I was curious if you had started painting them yet. Look how AMAZING they turned out! Great job and thanks for posting an update! I love how it looks!

Amazing difference! It looks so much lighter and brighter now. The color is a very good compliment to your counter tops :)

Usually a week is the max that I keep it (leftover from the last watering). Don't know why it wouldn't keep longer after mixing with water by why bother? Shelf life is probably years for unopened and probably at least that long for an opened bag. It tends to get clumpy opened on the kitchen windowsill, so I always put it in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid after opening.

Easier to paint before. Uses more paint, but less labor. Less chance of splotches too. On the other hand when I remodelled my old house I didn't paint before. So few areas that needed paint around the cabinets that it wasn't worth it and I painted myself so labor was just my time.

WE painted our cherry veneer 20 year old cabinets in our old house. We also replaced appliances, counter, backsplash, fixtures and found the old floor. I think you are on the right track removing the overhang, but also removing the soffit will make a huge differnce. Do it if there is nothing in it that is too difficult to relocate. If you do not replace doors, definitely fill in the groove and sand flat. You also be able to add glass to a few uppers to really make an impact. The fun thing about painting old cabinets is that you are not destroying anything and making an improvement. You could try different colors. We pained ours about every 3 years, first white, blue, then yellow. I wanted to try gray but we sold the house. We also cut out some of the uppers for glass, but ended up cheaping out and using wire. We also used Soapstone remnants, since we did not want to tear out anything too great because we wanted to eventually replace cabinets (moved first). We were able to them for $2500. Wow this actually turned out to look very very good. No risk, no reward. I wouldn't paint the doors. Wood is waaaaaay more elegant than paint. I just finished a massive apartment renovation. My tenants lived there for 25 years. Entire place was thrashed. I've always hated painted cabinets. After wasting 2 weeks trying to refinish them I had no choice but to paint them. People think its been factory painted lol. Now that I'm done, yes painted cabinets looks fresh and clean. But it there is this overwhelming feeling of cheapness that cannot be overcome. Wood cabinets is class! Cabinets are like furniture built into the house. Would you paint your furniture? Some people do but you'll never see high end furniture painted. You can see thousands of people giving away painted furniture on craigslist.

looks great!! I have the same darn cabinets. We really need a whole redo, but you make me want to at least give it a try as a temp fix anyways.

Looks great and I can't believe that only took you two days!! I would think it would take more time than that just for them to dry.

Thanks for the compliments.

Citymom, the photos you posted in my original thread were my inspiration for painting the cabinets something other than white, and I'm so glad I did.

Midwestmom, I did leave the doors off for several days to let them "cure" a bit, but the actual painting took two days. I've now painted every room of this house since buying it a year ago, so my speed has definitely improved with practice. :)

That is a remarkable difference and testimony to the fact that with planning, elbow grease and just a bit of money you can really transform a space.

Am I correct that you even kept the same hardware? It looks so different against the painted cabs I had to double-check.

I spent a lot of time poring over BM grey paint samples last summer, so I'm very familiar with your color choices. As good as they look in the pictures, I bet they're even nicer in person. Congratulations - your hard work was worth it!
