Comments (28)Wow, so sorry I missed your posts, Buehl and Alice462! I need to check this more often. I'm supposed to get emails when someone posts to avoid this, but that I only received them the first couple of days. Alice, the drawers around my rangetop are, from top to bottom, 6 7/8", 10 1/2", and 10 1/2" tall on the faces. Inside, the top drawer boxes are 3" tall, but have 5" of clearance because of being shorter than the space available. The 2 bottom rows are 6" deep with about 8 1/2" of clearance...So I can put pots and pans that are taller than the drawer box, but they don't scrape the drawer above. Does that make sense? My main sink counter and the breakfast area (30" wide to the left of the single fridge) are at 36" in height. I don't like to go lower around the cleanup sink, because it hurts my back to reach down that low into the sink. But where the mixer is, the island and the rangetop and counters beside are at about 34". We like the lower height for chopping, kneading, rolling, and even putting together sandwiches, etc. It's also better for looking into the mixer and into pots on the stove. I'm a bit over 5'3" and the kids are about my height or smaller (so far), so it works great for all of us. DH works in the kitchen occasionally and it doesn't seem to bother him. If he ever did something that took awhile and he wanted a higher work surface, he could do his working on a butcher block or something that would raise it. I don't have rollouts in this kitchen. I had them in my last and didn't like them. I tried to get too much in the cabinet and things would slide or fall off when I pulled it out. I also didn't like that I lost about 3" of cabinet width to the hardware and the pullout sides. I guess it's the same loss as with using drawers, but I find the higher sides of drawers to be much better, and I don't have to first open a door (or 2) to pull them out. All that said, I may add one rollout to one of the island cabinets, because my bread mixer has very grabby rubber feet and it'd be easier to get out if I could pullout it out and lift. I'm considering changing the doored cabinets in my island to drawers, so that would solve the problem, too. I'm so sorry to be so late in answering your questions. I sure hope you check back!...See MoreIf you've redone a 1980s/1990s kitchen please share!
Comments (2)Our Southern California home was built in 1980. We waited 27 years to do our kitchen remodel. - We opted to leave the soffit because of cost but improved the look and feel of the lighting. - Replaced the slide-in range/microwave with a cooktop and OTR microwave. Lengthened and deepened the peninsula. - Replaced oak cabinets with cherrywood frameless cabs and added a cab with glass to the end of the run. - Replaced 4"x4" tile countertops with Impala Black granite. - Replaced the tile floors with Chilian Cherry wood. - Replaced 4" high tile backsplash with Fire & Ice quartz brick. - Bumped out the cupboard over the fridge and added a side panel to the fridge. - Closed up a useless little window. - Added pendant lighting over peninsula. Here is a before and after photo: Jodi-...See MoreBefore and after photo?
Comments (49)Last Sunday, Jan. 3, I posted a photo that marked the beginning. The following two photos document the progress. This is how the dinette looks today after one week. Miss the brick. The brick and pine boards are gone but neatly stacked elsewhere for use in the future or donation. The ceramic floor is partially out, the debris taken to the dump. So far the dirt and grime are confined to this area. DH is working alone. We have been planning a new kitchen for years and years, but other projects at a vacation home and here at home took precedence ( and truthfully we were also struggling with the plan- better but not finalized yet) with DH doing most of the work which included a new kitchen, patios, a portico with columns, two bathroom remodels, a new dock house after Isabelle. It sounds crazy but my DH always has a project. This is the third remodel for this kitchen. Almost 40 years or so ago soon after we purchased the house, he enclosed the carport to make the dinette and added a garage adjacent to it; however, the galley kitchen that includes a a large eating area, connects to the dinette through a doorway. Over the years, we have stripped and refinished the cabinets, added an island in the eating space, changed countertops, updated appliances and floors, vaulted the ceiling on one side. The current plan is to remove the wall to open the kitchen to the dinette, install new cabinets, countertops, appliances, and wood floors etc. This week I have been tweaking the plans, reading the forums and Houzz, and thinking about finishes. Regards to everyone. I have enjoyed having a peek into your kitchens. It is nice to be in such good company....See MoreTwo day old kitchen - before and after photos.
Comments (13)Thank you everyone! We love our new kitchen. One remaining concern i have is durability of the painted cabinets. We used to have stained oak. How will it hold up to daily use. We have two relatively well behaved children (6 and 10 ) and a bearded dragon who is not allowed to leave his terrarium :) Any thoughts?...See Moresena01
