Please help me pick a medallion or not for foyer.

We are building a stucco split bedroom ranch in the Spanish Revival/Mediterranean style as the bones of the house. Meaning everything permanent that is attached to the house has this feel to it. I have since learned from another post (thanks for the info) I like to decorate in the transitional style.

Okay so with that in mind. The house has a very casual and open layout. Basically a great room with rooms branching off of it. I wanted to some how define the entry visually. I borrowed these medallions can I get an opinion on which you like better and why.

The first medallion is laying in the entry the second gives an idea to tile and wall color.

I think they are both utterly cool. So long as you are sure you don't want a rug in the foyer (which I think would compete) I think either would be gorgeous. I kind of fancy the larger one, especially if the other foyer things were kept simple so as not to compete too much.

I am returning both medallions to the tile store today. Unless they have another medallion that says "that's it", I am going to skip it. They are both nice in my opinion but neither passes my "Sweeby test". Cork2win: Yep, they are laying it light to light and then reverse. At first I didn't know what to think, I just figured it would be layed in a radomn pattern. Our tile guy is very meticulous about grout lines, patterns, etc. so I trusted his judgement on this and I really like it.

One of the appliance folk can probably say with more certainty than I could but the model you chose looks like the Optima I had in my apartment, which was a great, great dw. I have a 10 y.o. Incognito though it dries very well. I've never opened the door. Here's what Miele says about how the drying system works -- it is not heated drying and requires no energy usage. "Most Miele dishwashers employ an advanced drying system that draws room temperature air through a port at the bottom of the appliance. This air is disbursed through special channels around the exterior dishwasher cavity and allows the interior water particles to condense against the walls of the dishwasher. During this process no external air is ever introduced inside of the dishwasher. This provides the most effective and hygienic drying possible." The reason the dishes get dryer on Saniwash is because that water is very hot and, provided the dw is fairly full, the condensation is quite complete. I have Ikea cabinets in the laundry room so I'm aware of precautions with those. Their plinth board in there is starting to peel though the cabinets are doing fine. I would just be aware and make adjustments needed. The DW does come with a front piece that is contiguous with the toe kick in my kitchen but that would depend on which Ikea cabinets are being used and how they are being installed. Crystal looks like a good choice to me.

Yes, it is rough on the feet. My 10 yr old son complained! I don't think I would put one in a room where you might sit or lie on the floor. I've heard that it softens over time. Will be interesting to see if that happens. Right now I almost always have socks on, but once it warms up I will be barefoot most of the time. I am wondering if I will hate it then. Hope not, because I love the way it looks. At first, my powder room door would drag. But, it was not sitting totally flat due to being rolled up during shipping. Now, it's flat and the door is fine. But, I suspect if your door is real low, it might not work.

It's not really grey or tan. It's sandy, with some grey in it. The grey grout definitely looks better than the tan grout, doesn't match at all! There is no colour b/w those 2 (out of the what, 20 or so colours, you'd think there'd be something!). These were the initial ones I thought would match, then yesterday DH picked the same 2 out all by himself (tile guy left the samples to pick after the tile was laid). Thanks! He's coming later today to grout. And out of all the clowns that have been in our house, the tile guy and the hardwood floor guy have been so awesome. No wasting time, careful with our stuff, pride in their work. It's awesome.

I like option 1, too. More neutral, and would probably blend with your other accessories and surroundings, but both are very pretty.

Are you choosing between size also, or will they both be the same size as the first one?

If it's going on the tile that is in the second pic, I like the muted colors of #2.
If it's going on a dark brown tile (similar to background of the first pic) then probably #1.

If the actual entry space is only as large as the dark area in the first pix, I think the medallion is too large for the space. I like the design, but it needs more 'breathing room' around it. People walking in the door won't really appreciate it because they will be standing on it.

The second one is very greek islands to me. Not sure it would fit the decor you described.

I would either go smaller in the first design and color way, or do some kind of insets in the floor tile for interest instead.

My vote is for #2 - you state your style is transitional which according to the post in which it is described explains that it is a blend of modern & traditional, etc. #2 gives a nod to the Mediterranean mosaics while being clean lined enough to fit in with a more transitional decor IMHO :).

I love the design and colors of #1, but I agree with Les that it needs to be a wee bit smaller in that space.

I'm not a decorator, but it seems to me that if xoxosmom used a rug it would cover the same area as the first medallion (which I really like). Is there a rule of thumb for tile/wood medallions, for future reference?

I like #1 but it may be too large as mentioned.

I had much the same decisions to make recently. My foyer is only 10' wide and what I tried first was too large. I found a smaller (but not as fancy as yours) medallion but it was too small. The installer (who was very skilled) said he could add a border. I really like the result of the smaller medallion with a border crafted of the floor tile.

Mustangs - love yours! I think this would work in a more transitional style home too. The mosaics seem sort of southwest to me (but I am no decorator).

Also, if you think you might need a rug I would skip it and just get a beautiful rug that will be functional and easily switched out.

Please help me pick a medallion or not for foyer.

Not a fan of them and I wouldn't do one in my home due to it affecting a potential sale at some point. I would much rather have a nice tile in a pattern.

Right now medallions seem to be the in thing. Eventually houses will be sold that are being built now, all having different medallions. The potential buyer would have to like what you picked out. My tastes are more towards something like Mustangs picked, but not everyone likes floral either lol

As a buyer, having to remove flooring like that is a messy job, and if I could find a house without one, I would go for that.

I like the first one best. I think it would look really nice with dark chocolate brown tile all around it or maybe have a 3" border around the perimeter in the dark brown with the medallion in the middle.

In regards to its size, it may be a tad too big, but not way out of proportion. One thought if it wasn't available in a smaller diameter is to not put in the last circle of tiles.
