There are many Olde ways to celebrate Twelfth Night -- including a wild celebration with the Lord of Misrule where servants changed places with the masters of the household. Shakespeare's play of the same name celebrates the idea of masks and disguises. Also -- it is a night to enjoy cider and wassail!

When I lived on the west coast I always had a 12th night party (whenever it fell on a weekend). That was the Christmas party I had. It was something nice to look forward to after the hectic pace of December :) I have since moved, and a friend has adopted this tradition now and likes it as much as I did.

I think your DD will be in for culture shock when she leaves for school and meals are not that delicious and presented in such a lovely way. But she'll always look forward to getting back home during breaks.

This would be a nice solution to having a dinner with friends during the holidays. So many of mine have families, inlaws, and traditions of their own that it's hard to get everyone together at Christmas or even Christmas Eve. Pretty table.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes, Schoolhouse, it might be a good solution to having the crowd over for Christmas when many have family obligations. I was going to have one myself this year, but got sick as I was planning it. Next year instead for our local friends. Perhaps a dressy potluck.
Teacats: yes, some of those old traditions must have been fun, although the Lord of Misrule perhaps not always (LOL!).
Deedee: actually, as tasty as the Mornay sauce is, I think it overwhelms the lobster a bit too much. Next time I'll look for a different sauce, as I still have leftover, cooked and now frozen lobster from NYE. I (sadly) got ill then and couldn't eat much of it. We froze the majority. The Mornay sauce is great, though, and I plan on using the recipe again with something less special, like charcoal grilled shrimp.

Your table is beautiful! I love several smaller arrangements of flowers on the table instead of a single big one! The combination of elements is wonderful as well! That navitivity set looks like German silver....it is gorgeous and PERFECT for your table! (And it could go almost anywhere, the scale is great as well.)

Thanks for this, what a treat! We are also Episcopalians and when our children were small, used to tell them the story of Befana, the Italian crone who flies through the air on this feast day :) Many times we attended the diving for the cross in Tarpon Springs, Florida on epiphany and occasionally had a cross diving for our kids in the pool!

Hhireno: I know what you mean. DD has inherited my love of decorating and cooking. It will be interesting how she does in a small, shared dorm room at college. She's already telling us that she needs to skip the dorms and go right to an apartment instead. That's not going to happen(LOL!).

KSWL: Tarpon Springs? Do you live there? My parent's winter home is right outside there! In fact, I'll be heading down there again sometime in the next couple months. I love Tarpon Springs!
As for my silver colored nativity set, I love the detail, which is embossed n both sides f every figure. Not expensive, though. I bought them at Hobby Lobby for $10 on sale a few years ago. I usually keep them on my dining room window ledge during the holidays, as they're quite narrow. Here's a pic from my last year's Twelfth Night table. You can see them in the background there.

Hi Lynn, we don't live in Tarpon Springs , but we used to live in Palm Harbor just south of TS. My best friend is Greek and we had lots of friends whose sons dove for the cross, so it was a favorite part of our holiday celebrations. I love that part of Florida!

i grew up leaving all of the christmas decorations up til 1/6- the epiphany/ the 12th day... as kids, we would move the wise men along the table and then finally have them arrive on 1/6.

i still leave my decorations and tree up at least until 1/6, but don't really 'celebrate' it. it's really nice that you make a special meal, etc---like an official closure of the holidays!
i know three kings day is a really big day of celebration in puerto rico... schools are always off until after 3 kings day (1/6) and all/most businesses are closed in celebration! (was on friday this year, so made for another long weekend this holiday season for those who live on that island! i don't, but hub spends alot of time there...)

We celebrate "El Dia de los Reyes" off and on. Another tradition that I need to be consistent about!
