54 in. Square Kitchen Table

CostCo has a 54 inch square, counter height table right now. It comes with 8 chairs. I think this would be perfect for our eat-in kitchen area but was hoping to get some feedback from some of you. Anyone have this size? Can 8 really fit comfortably? How do you like the counter height?

we have a 60 inch square table with 8 chairs. I do not care for even the 60 inch with my 8 chairs, as you can not push them all in under the table- they have to be slightly pushed out. I have, however, ordered a counter height table with 8 chairs, but 2 of those counter height chairs will stay at the island unless they are needed for guests. We are a family of 6 so it works just having the 6 chairs at the table. My chairs are pretty wide however, 21" wide, so maybe smaller chairs would work. You'll love the square table, though! I really do like ours, which is why I ordered another square one!

Do you use placemats? If you have 8 placemats, I would try laying them out in a 54 inch square and seeing if that gives you enough room. I am thinking it is going to be really tight.

Thanks folks! All good input. I just emailed my brother, who's an architect, and his suggestion is: Keep the built-ins ONLY on the long wall. Don't wrap them around on the short wall flanking the wood stove. He would like to see bare wall there (with a firewood bin on the right and the chair/ottoman on the left of the woodstove.) What do you think about that? Regarding door hardware: I was thinking no hardware, actually... just those push-to-open thingies :) Color: my brother suggested stained or painted almost-black (playing off the slate woodstove wall). Palimpsest suggests wall color. I would have done white just cuz its my fall-back. I will have to think on that! Depth: The built-ins as drawn are about 11" deep. We don't have any A/V equipment deeper than that, so no need to bump any part out. I'm also not a huge fan of bumped-out cabinetry in a more modern setting. I know I said I wanted to keep it cottage-y, but it still has to work with my modern furniture :) I could probably be convinced if there was a really compelling argument, but my druthers is for simpler, usually :) Height: I considered varying the height (taller on short wall, etc) but I felt like going taller made the already small room feel a lot smaller. DIY- yes, we're building these ourselves :) .... although I think we may buy the doors from Scherr's. We have a really long project list to get through this year!

We switched our plans from round to rectangular after realizing how much less space it took up...there are some general rules of thumb, though they vary depending on where you look. But most books I found suggested 21-24" wide per person and 15"-20" deep. (We're probably going with 32" x 48" to seat three people on an L with one chair on the end, but just started testing it this weekend in our existing kitchen to see how it works!) If your only seating is the L, then a square or rectangular table will take up a lot less space than a round one, though. It also depends on what's on the other side of the table---ours will have open space on the fourth side, so in a pinch we could bring two more chairs in and (cozily!) seat six. HTH!

RL Relocation's suggestion is probably more elegant in a modern design, but my first thought was swag pendant. You'd need hooks at the various locations you might want them to hang. These are typically plug-in lamps, which means extra dangling cords. You can adapt a plug-in pendant to be hardwired and swag it from the canopy, or buy a hardwired pendant with a sufficiently long chain or cord and do the same. Since you want flexibility, and it is mainly just the two of you, I would use a round table in the space with two comfortable upholstered chairs. The chairs would work for dining and also for your use as a "reading nook". You can easily add extra chairs when you have company. A round table could seat 6, or you can get one that expands if you want it larger. Although bench seating gives you more seating space, it's not comfortable to sit without a back.

I would *love* a 60 inch, but until we remodel it would not fit.

BetterAtTheLake Â where did you find the 60 inch? IÂve Googled this and have come up empty handed. Is yours counter height?

Dekeoboe Â Great idea about the placemats! Maybe IÂll take them with me to CostCo and ask 7 strangers to sit with me! :-)

We are a family of 4 Â so it would probably be fine most nights. The room is actually screaming for a round table Â but I just prefer square. Actually Â if I could find a 54" square that had drop leafs to open into a 60" round Â that would be super cool Â anyone ever see this?

IÂd also like to find a Lazy Susan for the middle if possible.

My table is from Bassett furniture. If you go to their website click on custom dining. You choose your options, including the height of your table. My current 60" is not counter height and so we have to store the extra chairs until they are needed, so we decided to order the 54" counter height with 8 chairs and that way 2 of the chairs can stay at the island & brought over when more chairs are needed at the table.
There are many counter height tables. My friend just got a cherry and black one from Roomful Express & it is very nice. Very heavy, well made. I believe it was called Cedar rock or something. Probably made from Ashley Furniture. She bought 4 counter height chairs for her island (she has a bigger island) and leaves 6 chairs at her table & pulls them up to the table.
I went with Bassett because they have a special endurance finish on their table tops & 7 years and 4 kids later my table still looks new. That was important to me.

We have a 54" counter height table and have occasionally seated 8 at it. It is tight, but doable. I found square placemats to use, which work better than the rectangular ones. It's just me and my husband at home now, so we eat our meals at the kitchen counter. I like that I can move the counter height chairs between the table and the counter. The most we usually have over for dinner is 2 other couples, and the table is pretty comfortble with 6.
