Can she put the pill in meat?? My doggie used to eat the meat and spit the pill out. How about crushing it up and then putting it in something??

Peanut Butter!

Put some peanut butter on a small piece of bread and bury the pill in the Peanut butter.

The PB gets stuck to the roof of the mouth and they are so busy licking it off the pill goes right down and they don't even know it's there.

He even coughed it up after she stuck it way down in his throat and held his muzzle shut.

The trick is to get it far enough down the throat and then it will just go on down....no need to hold the muzzle shut. I've done that with antibiotic capsules.

I've also hid it in a small cheese ball that goes down in one gulp, with no chewing. Yes, peanut butter is good too, as is a small amount of tuna.

I doubt if pain is causing the licking, but the pain meds would likely make him feel better anyway, and maybe rest some.

I hope he mends quickly.

Cheese, peanut butter and hot dogs are great to hide the pill in.
As far as I know that cone is probably the only thing that will keep him from licking though.

I've always had luck by pushing the pill down the throat, then holding the dog's mouth shut and just rubbing his throat till he swallows.

YUCK GEL! we got our's at the vet for our girls. we've only used it a few times for injures etc...but you HAVE to be careful w/ this stuff. it has some sort of base in it that causes the bitterness to adhere to the skin and once you get it somewhere it is NOT washing/licking off for days. use a Q-Tip for application and do not get it on your hands lol it can not be washed off for days. my girls wear seatbelts in the jeep and sandy used to 'try' to chew the car seatbelt trying to free herself. one application of Yuck Gel is all i've ever used on the jeep seat belt and yrs later she will try to chew it and gets it in her mouth.

i'd also suggest a mild sedative, either prescription or an herbal like PetEzz (petsmart) and use the collar. Good Luck ~ liz

Yes, they go nuts, but they adapt. I've had several cats I had to collar. Buster kept trying to back out of it. It was a couple of day before he stopped walking backwards. LOL!

Just make sure the collar is the correct size - that he can reach his water and food dishes. They learn to navigate with it. My cats have had to wear them for 7-10 days and they all adjusted to it.

It's better than having the wound pop open and have to be restitched, possibly infected.

About the pills - sometimes a pill popper works. You can slide it into the side of the mouth and it pushes the pill far back down the throat so they are less likely to spit it out.

I have never had luck with masking meds in food.

One thing that I do that almost always works - pulverize the pill into powder (but check first to make sure it isn't a coated pill that shouldn't be dissolved until it hits the stomach).

Squirt a little canned food gravy from some dog or cat food into a small shot glass or coffee measure cup, mix the powdered pill in with it, pull it up in a 1 or 3 cc syringe (without the needle) and squirt into the mouth.

Your vet should be able to give you a 1 or 3 cc syringe.

One of my dogs recently had an injured foot AND wouldn't take his antibiotic pills. The vet told me to use first-aid tape to keep sock on his let. Fortunately, I had a lot of old white cotton socks. When we went out, I covered the sock with a plastic bag. A nuisance, but he was no longer able to lick the wound.

As for pills, I highly recommend that you get a piller. Vets sell or give them away. Cheap plastic thing with a plunger. You can get the pill to the back of the animal's throat with ease. Wet the pill first so it goes down quickly.
