33' Lazy Susan Cabinet Door too small?

Hi Everyone! This is my first post, and we are in the design stage of a very small kitchen. Love this forum, and appreciate all the help you all offer.

Does anyone have a 33" lazy susan cabinet? One designer said the door opening is too small to truly be functional. If we go with a 36", our range will end up almost flush with the door to the dining room. Wish we had more options - yes we have also considered a blind corner cab.

I have two 33x36 corner cabinets - one with a lazy susan and one without. I find both are fine. My designer said the 33x33 would be too small to be usable. Is this something that might work in your space? It worked very nicely for me.

We had a 33" door at our old beach house and I really didn't like it. I guess it's ok if you just use it for canned goods. That's what we did. The 33 x 36 like Teresa's sounds like a good idea. I took the super susan out of our new kitchen at home with this remodel because it made the adjacent drawer bases too small. For me, it was worth the trade off though I have to say that the old super susan served us very well.

There are assymetrical lazy susans available. A 33/36 one could let you use the 33" dimension where space was critical but give you a larger half of the door in the 36" dimension to help with clearance getting objects in and out of the cabinet. I try to use a 33" susan as rarely as possible because the door is so small that it's difficult to store anything but canned goods in it. Your food processor, blender, or other small appliances won't really fit through a 33" door, and only the very small cassserole dishes will without awkwardly turning them sideways to get them in and out. WHen you have to turn an object sideways to get it through a door, that's when you get smashed and bumped fingers and hands and broken objects.

What dimensions are you talking about for the cabinet and the door opening on the kitchen side? I have a peninsula and installed a 33" x 33" Easy Reach KM base corner cabinet with a bi-fold door. This type of cabinet has one fixed shelf where the front shelf edge is recessed back 4.5" to allow easier access to the lower contents. The diagonal opening on mine is 11" wide. The hinges restrict this space down further to 10.5." However, turning items vertically when placing them into the cabinet is the secret. Since the entire cabinet is accessible for storage, this cabinet has a huge capacity. Some items in mine are an old style aluminum cake carrier, a tall cake stand, very large Corning ware casseroles. Cookie sheets, cake and muffin pans are store vertically between metal dividers on part of the left side of the top shelf. A test run at a big box store with some of the larger items I wanted to store told me this cabinet would meet my needs. I just wanted to let you know there is a third option between the two you have considered.

ShaggyDogs - can you do a 36"x33" corner susan? It will give you a bigger opening - that's the biggest limiting factor in a 33"x33" corner susan. Corner susans can be very useful. They're great for pot & pan storage - especially if you don't have drawers for them. They're also great for small appliances. Everything is always in front. You just rotate the shelf/shelves until the item you want is in front - then easily lift it out! I loved the one in our old Kitchen. We stored all our pots & pans, colanders, and large serving pieces in one 36"x36" corner susan - it was a lazy susan (pole down the center) with the doors attached to the shelves so they rotated into the cabinet when it was open. Blind corner cabinets are useless without swing outs or roll out tray shelves (ROTS) You can't store anything in front of the ROTS b/c it needs to be clear in front of them to pull them out. Swing outs can be problematical - especially if something falls off the shelves in the interior - you have to send a small child inside to retrieve the item and you cannot close it until it's retrieved! My KD demonstrated a couple of different models for us - she said most people come back complaining about the swing outs so she moves heaven and earth to not use a blind corner! My MIL has upper and base blind corners (no ROTS or swing out) and she says they're a waste b/c it's too difficult to get into them - she doesn't store anything in the "blind" areas. You may be better off voiding out the corner if the opening is too small to be useful on a 33"x33"....or consider corner drawers, but they will probably be very expensive.

Lisa - two KD people that I have spoken to said that the voided corner does not provide wider drawers on either side. What am I missing? Nothing as far as I can tell because what they are telling you makes no sense to me at all. If you don't give up 12" of linear space to a Susan, you gain 9" of drawer width (3" goes to spacer at corner). I considered adding a BCC to my sink corner (didn't have space on sink side to do corner Susan) but opted not to because a) it wasn't the right kind of storage for that corner and b) a drawer base was cheaper storage than a BCC. Here's my corner. Drawers & trash pull-outs open. If I had done a BCC, I would have lost the bank of drawers on the right. If I'd had room for a corner Susan, I would have lost 27" of much needed drawer storage. The few items that I would have been able to store in a BCC (ditto for a corner Susan) ended up in a a single drawer in a much roomier cab next to my wall oven. I use the items in the drawers in my prep zone much more regularly than the items I use in the drawer by my oven. A few extra steps now and then is a much better option than extra steps several times a day, IMO. Look at the whole picture when it comes to storage. What you decide for one area affects storage in another. It's a domino effect, IME.

I have two 36" corner supersusans and one 33" x 36" "Plain" corner cabinet with a shelf. I didn't get the supersusan in the 33"X36" cabinet because I thought it would be a waste of $$ to put a supersusan in it and it would not be that functional. Yes, the door on the 33" is smaller, but I do put A LOT of stuff in there (mixing bowls, measuring cups, baking dishes).

I got the 33"X36" SS to center my sink with the window and also fit my DW in.

Sometimes we have to make decisions that might not be the "right" way to so something, but it's the best way for the situation.

I would prefer not having your range right next to your door and going with the 33" cabinet. I would prefer that over a blind cabinet. JMHO.

Well, what are your other options? In my MN kitchen, they told me the exact same thing about a 33x33 lazy susan cab. The KD said the door would be too small to be functional. He specifically said I wouldn't be able to "get my shoulders in there" (?! whatever!). Of course, I ignored that silly shoulders-in-the-cab notion and put a 33x33 in anyway. It worked just fine and I loved it. I did NOT ever need to fit my whole body inside and I never lost anything in the back.

It was the only cab in between my sink and my stove (see below). I used the susan cab daily - it held my mixing bowls, small appliances (food processor, hand mixers, etc), larger tupperware and pitchers. I never found the opening to be too small or too inconvenient, and I never had a problem putting things in or getting things out. I did have two doors (hinged on either side of the cabinet and opening in the middle rather than the usual door that hinges together in the middle), so that may have made a difference. But FWIW, if I had to choose between a 33" lazy susan and a blind corner cab, I'd choose the susan every time.
