Nigel-Bigel? How was the brunch with the kosher-observant friends? What did you end up serving? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks for your sweet comments, "Holiday-ers!" Can't believe a week in July is gone already ...summer is passing by so fast! I looked up info on the "Our Flag" print (not 'The Flag') ...it's a pretty old framed print (lithograph) & I appreciate it even more now w/Mom gone. yes...it was a real good weekend...work & play ...had some of kids/gr'kids home! And, who knows, luvs...we may meet up again one day! That is if Jane ever gets that bus tuned up & rollin'! I'll ever let Dollbaby ride along if Punk will bring TJ! LOL! Hi guys! I'm here again. Already been to a Scottish Highlands celebration---VERY FUN! and an airshow---big stuff here---very talented pilots! "Big" earthquake wasn't anywhere around here, but there are frequent earthquakes in this area. The REAL threat is the mosquitoes! YIIIIII! I bought HUGE citronella candles, DEET spray, and citronella plants---and STILL they come! Combatting the bugs is a joke and constant hobby here. I was potting some plants for my porch yesterday and thought I was going CRAZY--getting bitten and buzzed out there! I will take my large candles with me next time! The greenhouses here are very casual and freely run. The plants are mondo sized and CHEAP! Nearly everything is under 10 bucks. It's downright dangerous for me! lol. QOD: the 4th: We're headed out to a small fishing village that has a gigantic celebration on the 4th. It's a 5 hour drive and then a ferry ride, but I'm told it's worth it, so off we go! Then coming back to a family casual dinner with all Americano food probably--kosher dogs, salad, and whatever else people bring. Tikanas~ I am STRICT about keeping a food diary and try to eat healthy choices; lots of fiber and veggies and VARIETY! I don't eat a huge amount of protein-usually only for dinner-and an occasional egg for brekky. I was weighing in every day at home and then once a week at Weight Watchers, but since I arrived here for the summer, I have not weighed. I probably will cave and buy a house scale and there's a WW place nearby, so I will start weighing in again. I use the scale and book from WW to keep myself accountable to someone! I have lost a large amount of weight since October- about 25 pounds or so. It is a SLOW weight loss (about 2 or 3 ponuds a month), but it's finally staying off and no big fluxuations any more, so I'm finding this to be the way for me to go. Well, we are having a guy DH met over for dinner tonight. He's Korean and homesick, so I am making Korean BBQ, rice, and cabage salad with sesame oil and chili oil. I better get hopping tho', cause I have to marinate the beef! I'll check in tomorrow! Magickitty~ Up, up, and away with the restart! Take Marci's hand and go for it! None. I am resting up for a day at the fair with the grand kids tomorrow. All fireworks are illegal here which means I may get to see a show from my yard if I'm lucky. Or I may take the dog and go drive somewhere and park to watch them. The more illegal they get the more spectacular the displays are. People complain about it every year. Well it stands to reason if you are fined the same for a sparkler as you are for an powerful explosion of course those that do them will go for the big stuff. Duh. There was much less of a problem before they banned safe and sane fireworks.

My brother does not eat red meat, and so we never have that when we barbecue, which is often. I do not associate red meat with the 4th, but I do associate salmon with it. I think fish is very tricky to grill properly, and only fatty fish like salmon is really worth it, as lean fish, such as swordfish, will not get much smoke flavor, as that is stored mainly in the fat. It is also easy to overcook swordfish, making it dry, and so I always grill that indoors. However, I do love salmon grilled on the barbecue. I prefer pieces that have skin, and I season it with a tiny bit of salt & white pepper plus some dill (okay if it is dried), and then I rub it with avocado oil or grape seed oil on the side that does not have skin. When I grill it, I always start with the presentation side down (i.e., skin side up), and the grill must be oiled. When it releases from the grill, I flip it over and cook for about three minutes with the skin side down. Sometimes the skin gets stuck to the grill, but all of the fish will release, and I don't eat the skin anyway, although I have friends who do. If I grill any other fish, I put it in a grill basket so that it can be removed from the barbecue more easily, and it's easier to turn over this way. Our market sells chicken and turkey sausage that they make on site, and it is very good, and we barbecue that frequently also. You might want to look for some "gourmet" sausage, as that is very easy to cook and takes on a nice smokey flavor.

Hello my darlings! It is I, sitting in my fluffy pink bed with my little yippy dogs, eating non-kosher bon-bons. I have taken to my bed as the holiday-exhaustion has proven to be too much for me to handle. I think I might even have the vapors - whatever they are. Thank goodness Eduardo is due here any minute for my deep-tissue massage.

You guuuyyys... asking about me, I'm touched - seriously.

Anyway... the brunch went great, mostly because it ended up not being a brunch. Our friends had to go out of town unexpectedly and wouldn't be arriving back home until July 5, so we planned on getting together then for dinner instead.

It turns out they are more kosher than I thought. Since they only have one dishwasher I assumed they were kind of lax about things, but it turns out that is the only thing they are lax about (in addition to eating off of my dishes). We ended up serving...

Grilled tuna steaks with Bernaise sauce
Roasted Asparagus
Rice Pilaf with raisins and pine nuts
Fresh Mozzerella and tomatoes

Actually it worked out for the best because we had 45 people for a cookout and fireworks on the Fourth. I don't know what I was thinking, inviting this other couple to come for brunch earlier in the day!

Thank you for asking about me! Oh! I think I hear Eduardo approaching! I need to hurry up and wipe the chocolate off my face...

All's well that ends well! The dinner sounds perfect. And it is really a good thing you didn't try hosting a brunch and then a cookout for 45 other people. Even Eduardo would have had a hard time repairing that amount of damage.

There are so many 'variations on the theme' for keeping kosher. Some people are stricter than others about where they will eat. It depends on how you interpret the rules, I guess. Like all religions, there are different styles and levels of observing.

The dishwasher issue is not a litmus test though. Many people who keep kosher have only one dishwasher and use it for either meat dishes or dairy ones. Although, if the dishwasher has a stainless steel interior and you have 2 sets of racks you can use it for both, but not at the same time. Modernity and creativity, 2 things to be thankful for!

Jessica, I still haven't been able to find Raoul, I've been cleaning my own pool. Again. Sheesh, it's so hard to find a good cabana boy these days.....

Or perhaps Raoul is visiting Nigel-Bigel along with Eduardo? It's because I don't have bon-bons and a fluffy pink bed, isn't it?

Raoul is here giving me pedicures and footrubs to my poor pregnancy swollen feet. He also is the best ice cream maker and has been making homemade ice cream and cleaning the house and doing the laundry. DH is even thinking of getting himself his own Raoul to rub his tootsies since I won't do it.
