And can you suggest a ceiling light fixture?

Well it finally made sense to my family why I painted my ceiling black (besides the thrill of having a black ceiling) and am painting the kitchen very similar too. I finally got my canvas that I'd wanted for a few yrs. this Christmas. It looks too small in the pic but it actually fills upthe wall very well.

My last step at this point is to choose a perm. hard wired ceiling fixture so PLEASE show me what you would envision for this hall. The temp one hanging is just a plug in that I threw up a few yrs. ago when I took the hideous hardwire one down.

The kitchen entry is just off to the side of where the picture ends and is getting a black & cream color scheme. My dad took measurements of the kitchen over Christmas to start work on that this Spring.

Here is the nook under the stairs by the kitchen door. This is still a work in progress but I just think minor tweaks is all that I will need to do. Suggestions welcome. Should I stick w/ a mirror (do a vertical one or do you think a coordinating sepia print/ canvas?). The drop leaf table stays and is used as a drink station during get togethers.

My office area. You've already seen this completed pic before but now you can see how the downstairs is starting to flow together. Still looking for about 2 yards of tan zebra print fabric to recover the chair seat. This room is right off of the hall. When DH's side is cleeean I'll show that.:

Quick pic of the bones of the LR to get an over-all idea of the flow again. Will post more and better once complete.

The DR is fairly done too and when I clean that (current dumping ground for Christmas decor) I will post those pics.

Wow wow wow! You have such a great talent! I would look for a similar vintage looking chandelier to hardwire in. The ceiling color made sense to me before but now it is wow!

Enduring: the vinyl floor is Mannington, the collection is called Alloy, and the color we got was Carbon Steel. For the tile I went with DalTile K101 because it was a white that was close to Kohler white. The grout color is SuperWhite. Even so, the white silicone caulk seems a little whiter IMHO. But only if you're looking for it :) Kirkhall - I see Williamsem has given you the link to the Kohler Bancroft ranting :) (thanks, Williamsem!). The tub is a plain old Villager by Kohler. It is new, it's cast iron. Not a great tub for soaking because it's only 30"x60" and not very deep ... But it fit in the space and wasn't expensive. In the master bath we got the Kohler cast iron shower base and I really like it (just the looks, still need shower doors so we haven't used it). Thanks, everyone! I do love having a counter (instead of a teeny wall mount sink) to get ready for work at. Definitely want to finish the space, though. I'm hanging the door today (yay!) Your shower is so much lighter and large feeling. Well done. Very nice and a great straight forward room. It's probably good that you started small and learned from the unexpected issues. Now when the Master gets underway you will be so much more knowledgeable and ready for the surprises.

Well, what a nice surprise to run across this old post! I was just perusing GardenWeb and Houzz as we get revved up for another remodel, when a google search for “sapele kitchens” turned up this, my “almost-done” victory lap post. Please forgive me my moment of sentimentality, but reading through my post and the subsequent comments has me a bit verklempt; we are, as of this writing, only a few days away (probably) from committing to buy a new house, which means leaving this one, and our wonderful kitchen. Much has changed in the 5+ years since this post went up: The backsplash behind the range was installed; the rather wispy red Japanese maple that you can see in our backyard in a couple of the pics above is now pretty robust and magnificent; we had to say goodbye to our beloved boxer a few months back (our “first born”); we have a son, an amazing 16 month old,who has, of course, become the center of our universe; we are working on a sibling for him. With a growing family, and frequent visits from out of town grandparents, we are feeling a bit cramped in the home we thought we would be in long term. We found a new place in a lovely neighborhood, despite Seattle’s current crazy real estate market (after getting absurdly outbid on some places—like over asking by almost 25% of a big asking price in one case). It’s from 1907, was updated in the 70s and 80s, but needs a good overhaul. (I’ve tried to attach a couple of pics of the current kitchen but this interface limits comment size so much (~21k characters) that it seems that photos aren’t going to be an option. I’ll try to post some pics in comments to follow). It has served the current owners well over the last 45 years, but it is time for an update. It’s certainly a first world problem, but it makes me sad to leave our current kitchen after having put so much thought and energy into it, and after it turned out so beautifully. It has been such a joy to spend time in it. But the real reason I started writing this comment: I thought I would right two wrongs that I have just noted while reading through my original, ancient post: I never once acknowledged by name our architect, who played a primary role in bringing our current kitchen to fruition. His name is Andrew Borges, of Rohleder Borges Architecture (http://www.rb-a.net/), and he was fantastic to work with. So much so, that we are teaming up with him again for the next remodel. I never posted any photos of the backsplash behind the range, as I said (above) that I would do. I still really love the tile that we chose—an etched limestone (I think) with a repeating dahlia pattern. As I was looking at Andrew’s firm’s website just now, I realized that he has a pic of our kitchen with the backsplash in view so I have included that here too. Thanks for the encouragement all! Was certainly a risk that paid off, and we toiled over this color for a while. In the end it took me painting half a wall and also to model the room on the computer to see if such a dark color would work. During the day in the sunlight it is clearly purple, but very, very dark. At night sometimes it feels black, but always with a purple tint. I think eggplant describes it pretty well. Some of the purple accoutrements help show that we picked this color on purpose :) In an earlier thread people thought we should tone down some of the white trim, doors, and ceiling. We are still considering this...a metallic silver ceiling would be cool (but likely expensive and messy). @lovemrmewey, no real inspiration except my wife wanted something "glam" and it had to have a tufted bed. Originally she thought all shades of grey, but after painting our dining room a really dark blue we were inspired to try something else dark. Also, no real reason for the artwork other than more is more, but after everyones comments I think I'll hold back and try less is more for a while. Also it makes no sense to do anything until we get curtains and see how that looks. We are thinking a shimmery silver. One other thing, is we went risky/bold with the walls, but everything else is shades of silver in case we tire of the purple. @celerygirl, thanks for the test pics with art. I especially like the second, but maybe things are getting a bit crowded. I'll get up the curtains, which will also eat into some of the wall space, so will hold off a bit more. I found some cool x-ray photographs of flowers tinted purple that looked kind of neat. I need to post a shot of the TV wall, its across from the chair -- and is just a TV floating on the wall. The wires are still hanging, and there is a lot going on on the wall with switches, thermostats, volume controls, etc. Maybe I can do something there to hide all that business. @pamelamcleod, thanks. We saw the Benjamin Moore color of the year "Shadow" on the cover of one of their books (its the it's the shot with the spiral staircase) and thought it looked really cool. The problem was the shot was lit really dramatically and in person, the color seemed too light and too purple. We went one shade darker called "Galaxy" which evoked more of the drama we were looking for. This is a new house for us, and the old house was all Tuscan earthy shades of gold and brick and sage, so when we moved we wanted to change it up a bit. We still have some light sage (it worked well in the kitchen with the existing cabinets and countertops), but in the dining room went with a really dark blue. We loved the dark blue so much we went dark in our bathroom (super dark green -- BM "Dragon's breath", and thought lets try it in the bedroom. Worst case, we paint right back over it (we knew we were replacing everything else anyway). Turns out, we love the dark colors, but are lucky that we have tons of light so don't feel anything is cavelike :) Some other colors we went with were some trendy taupes and greys. We have NO gold or yellow anywhere anymore! One other challenge we are struggling with is that some of the rooms still have the heavy ornate wood, gold, silk in a rococo style, while others are trending more transitional or deco. Hopefully we are making it work by keeping most rooms consistent, but as a whole our house is now a bit of a mish-mash. Our dining room is like a war between the two styles, but it kind of works...I think. Maybe I'll post that on a separate thread to get some opinions. Another interesting thing we have found: are antique brass fixtures coming back? We decided to use antique brass hardware with the silver in the bedroom for knobs, handles, accents. Kind of hard to see on the dresser and nightstands in the pics, but it's there. Was counterintuitive vs. brushed nickel or stainless, but we loved the personality. We now are seeing it more commonly, wonder if trend has subliminally guided us? Everyone else: thanks so much for the encouraging words, we are especially pleased and wish some of our other decorating has been as dramatic and successful! Keep any ideas or tips coming, we are kind of decorated out at this point, so moving at a snails pace. Am guessing it will take at least a year before we get curtains :) Cheers, Andy

Looks great! Whether a mirror or artwork, I would do vertical. That space calls for vertical.

I love the black ceiling - even before you added the print!!

Yes, vertical above the beautiful drop leg table. The mirror there now (gorgeous) is not tall enough to show a face reflection. I had the same problem with my drop leaf table in my entry so I put a portrait of my son above it.

I don't know how you feel about family photos in the house - but what about a sepia toned or black and white photo of your family? I said to hel! with it ~ and love seeing my DS's portrait instead of tucked away in a bedroom.

I vote for a mirror and a light fixture similar to what you have in there. That one seems to go so well with everything else that is going on in your home. I really like what you have done so far!

Love the black ceiling, would never have thought or dared to do something like that. I would look for a larger vintage fixture, similar to what you already have. I love your canvas on the wall as well, one thing I hope you dont mind me saying, would you consider moving it so it is centered with the light fixture?

I also agree a large vertical black framed mirror would look great above your table.

It's looking so good! I love that mirror, but I agree in that space you need vertical. I can't tell from the pic, but does your drop-leaf have the barley twist legs? We put one in our sunroom (which is much like a regular room) and I use it for overflow dining or just for the two of us as we like to eat out there also. I was thrilled to find one with the barley twist legs.

Don't laugh but I was looking at a pic I had saved of your secretary from some time ago. I have a chest in our bedroom - looks like a short chest-of-drawers, but the top *drawer* is the pull down desk, and it has the pretty little spaces inside. I have never really *decorated* the spaces. I was looking through my files of decorating pics and your picture is an inspiration for me to do something with my chest/desk. Beautiful!

I love what you've done and can't wait to see the dining room.

Thanks! I'm soooooooo excited to be a in a final stretch!

The mirror that's there currently was just to fill up the space - def. something vertical is required. Scooby - did you ask about family portraits? I'd rather die than be w/o my family photos!

And so funny you mention Sepia family portraits - I just had them done at JCP last week and ordered a big sepia one of my kids for over the fireplace.

I hesitate to buy a new vertical mirror (IKEA has a great oval one) since I don't need it but photos whether mine or other's will always have a place on my walls and floors no matter what.

I scouted Lowes and HD over the wknd. and saw a few contenders. They have to be cheap enough to leave in the house when we sell. Something's gotta go there!

I'm secretly toying w/ painting the tiniest (9'X8' maybe) bedroom/ library black once DD is in her sort of big girl rm. that I'm working on now. It has one wall of built in bookshelves. All trim & shelves would be white w/ a slipcovered white chair (residing in attic from DH's bachelor days) and ottoman and a small TV for the kids to play their games on. I haven't pitched that idea to DH yet but I have enough leftover black paint to give it a whirl!

Roseabby - must have been posting at the same time! The pic of my hallway is really misleading I think. The canvas is actually centered on the wall. To me at least, the picture makes the wall look waaaaay bigger than it actually is and the canvas look smaller than it actually is.

When you walk into the hall from the vestibule your eye actually takes in the entire back wall including the door to the kitchen which is between the canvas and the nook.

Tina - in a small house it is important to me that everything have a purpose or be used on a regular basis IN ADDITION to being pleasing on my eye. I have to have somethng decent to look at amongst the explosion of kids toys and dirty socks in the downstairs!

Just as My3dogs shows in her place - form and function don't always have to be sacriifced for beauties sake.

In all of those cubbies hold mini books that my children look at on a daily basis, Thank You notes so that there is no excuse to not write one, paint chips that I obsessively pick up, fabric samples for when I learn to sew and old books that have been handed down to us that just give me a warm feeling when I look at them and think of all of the other hands that have held and read them.

I love your wall of family photos!! I have a bunch that have been sitting in a closet for years. Im still trying to figure out if I should reframe them all so they match or not.

I say that when guests enter my home and see his portrait ~ they will know who rules this roost! And he does:)

My sis just had some photos done at Jcpenneys and they were beautiful - with their little bare feet. I have really slacked off on professional photos of him since he has gotten older.

I like this Neo-Grec fixture from Rejuvenation. Its pricey but at least it could be an inspiration of sorts. They have a lot of other fixtures that would be appropriate too.

I like the mirror you have there, but I'd move it up and fill in with taller things on the table. you already have the tall lamp.

I *love* the black ceiling!!! I never would have thought of that, it does make the ceiling disappear. I wonder whether DH would let me paint our downstairs ceilings black (would all of them have to be? Incl. powder room, LR, mudroom which can be closed off but normally doors are open?)? Maybe it's just that our old house had cathedral ceiling in FR, but the 8ft ceiling in FR in this house seems close. Of course the kitchen (one big room) doesn't, b/c the old house had 8ft ceilings everywhere else so maybe it's just me...

Love the black ceilings! Never would have thought of it. Love your beautiful home. Love Ttodd's photo wall. I don't think I could pull it off though. I don't think I could get them to hang so nicely. :)

Interesting effect. It needs a fairly substantial fixture to not look lost in a sea of black.

Shiny bright metal - brass or gilt
Glittery glass - the classic crystal
White or very pale - something with white shades, or even a white finish fisture
Bright colored - colored glass shades or danglies.

Very pretty - I loved the Baby Turtle but really like the new color also! I think a vertical mirror or artwork would fill up the wall space over the table.
