Please help with an entry without a chandelier

We are choosing lighting for the front entry in our remodel. I def. don't want a chandelier so I am trying to figure out sconses instead. Does anyone have any good ideas? It is about 12'x12', with the rest of the space taken up by an open stairway, 2 storey height, and the open hallway on 3 sides above. It has no other function so all we need is ambient lights. Should we just put sconces on either side of the doorways, or is there something more imaginative we should do?

Sorry, can't help. I have the same questions only I do want a chandelier. My area is 5 x 10 (width). I have a spiral stairway (small) and a balcony on one side. My ceilings are also 2 story. I do not know what the proper width for that area is. My local lighting dealer seemed to have different answers depending on which light I was looking at. Confusing! Good luck.

For a chandelier one rule of thumb is that the diameter in inches corresponds to the diagonal measurement of the room in feet.

The diagonal in that room is about 11.5 feet, so the fixture could be about a foot in diameter. This rule of thumb is generally for a more squarish room, but I think it works here....

i think the banister in a charcoal grey would be beautiful (black may be too jarring - grey may soften it up) Put a stunning round table in the center with a custom floral display so that becomes the focal point and the stuff you dont like will "fade" into the background

Can you stand in center of foyer area and take a photo straight up. Another trick I have used is to get a couple helium filled balloons with long strings attached. Take to house and experiment with space and heights. Btw, that builder’s story is nonsense. The HVAC duct runs appear to be behind that angled framing. The framing inspector might have required additional support for the roof with that angled mess. I would ask to see the structural engineering blueprints. I would bet that isn’t on drawings. If it is, then that is architectural problem. Just my thoughts based on experience.

No that is not what I said,...........................you can say all and anything you like, but you cannot be critical of someone's comment without stating a sound rationale and reasons. Give all the opinions & suggestions you like on this open forum, but do not attempt to couch them in expertise because you move furniture as a pro. I'm not about to tell you how to get a sofa in an elevator or load a truck because I have no expertise in that field. I may have an opinion, but no real first-hand knowledge. I hope you see the difference.

How about light boxes either side of the door to seem like side lights? Height and width to fit the space. Maybe some figured glass. Or spotlights high up on a wall that can be aimed to illuminate art pieces on a stand or a wall with spill light providing ambient. Maybe little downlight brackets with MR16s around the inside of the floor edge at the open areas.

Thank you for the replies. And for the suggestions, arbordomus. I knew GW would be imaginative! The spots on art might work. The front door will have sidelights so we wouldn't duplicate that look.
