...we all scream for ice cream!

It's summer and obviously our thoughts turn to ice cream...well, I know I'm thinking about it, anyway! ;)

What are your favorite flavors and ice cream desserts? Do you go for the toppings or are you a purist? How about homemade ice cream -- is it worth the trouble?

Worth the trouble if you have an electric freezer....not sure if you have to crank it...
Heavy cream, eggs, sugar and pure vanilla....
Topping is for store bought stuff.
However...."undering" is good...like rhubarb pie or peach pie...

Homemade peach ice cream. No toppings. Fresh picked peaches, of course.

The old adage "if you want something done right, do it yourself" rings very true here. I like the yellow stakes idea. Even if the mow/blow guys can't read, surely they know their colors - do not touch!!! The yard man who does the landscape care where I work clips the formosa azaleas like hedges - even after August when they have set their buds for next spring. I told my boss but he still does it, and there were no flowers this year. Duh! You grow up in Florida and don't know azaleas aren't hedges??? I've had my neighbor's "20-year old handyman/gardener" spray RU in the wind (my whole front yard of roses was downwind) and say "my uncle says it only kills grass". There's no cure for stupid. The builder of our subdivision (34 lots) did not want an HOA but after erecting a nice entrance sign for the subd name was told by the city that doing so required him to have an association (?!?!). So he went the minimally invasive route of a POA - Property Owners Association. In Florida anyway a POA may or may not apply even the few rules they have which are only meant to protect property values NOT dictate house color, yard plantings, etc. Our rules do say we must have grass in the front yard, but the board has not enforced that against me. :)) Invariably, there are errors in communication - especially between men and women (I won't say more, but I don't understand what's so hard about LISTENING). Funny thing - my bosses DH is a very verbal, non-mechanical, lawyer-educated but non practicing man who repeats EVERYTHING he says at least twice. At first I found it kind of aggravating, but then I came to appreciate the second chance to "get" his instructions and now wish everyone would "tell me twice". I'm more and more grateful for the toughness of OGRs. I hope hoovb's HOA Mons Tillier is on its way to recovery, and I hope luxrosa's 12" tall teas survived. I will be hugely impressed if they do. Oh the poor mouse babies! I hope mama mouse rescued them before they became dinner for the snake. I encountered what certainly looked like a garter snake on the bank of the brook a few days ago, coiled into a striking posture and audibly hissing at me. I may have surprised him with my weeding activity, but I've never known a garter snake to act so aggressively/defensively. It made a run for it out into the shallows of the brook where it lay in the water, waiting for me to depart. While I know that all snakes *can* swim, I've never seen a garter snake deliberately head out into the water. They usually slither off into tall weeds or under the foundation of the barn. I was determined to finish my weeding so I didn't take time to go get the camera. But my search later to identify the snake didn't turn up anything that looked remotely like what I saw, except garter snakes. Has anyone ever encountered such aggression in a garter snake? Now milk snakes are known to coil, strike, and hiss! I'd expect it from your serpent, Wendy!

I had to pay for the first time in my life, Federal taxes. Not a whole lot, though. I adjusted my withholdings on both State and Federal since I got back too much from the State of KY.

Michael, IMHO - you need to move and not leave a forwarding address! Those hillbillys will put you in the loony bin. As I told you before: they all WILL survive without you - they don't consult you when they get into their messes, so don't you find it interesting that they consult you after the fact? Have you ever let a herd of calves out in a green corn field? Weeeellll, you can give those calves all the advice (about not eating green corn) that you want, but theys gonna do what theys gonna do, and nothing you can do will stop them, SO...... pretend your little brain surgeon, her mama, and YOUR MAMA are in a green corn field, and theys gonna continue to eat the green corn, DESPITE your advice - some never learn their lesson. Just tell them that when they get intestinal distress, don't come bawlin' to you! You have already gone way above the call of duty, so it's time to let 'em figure out their mistakes all by themselves!! They just might surprise you.

When you make a "fresh fruit" ice cream.... do you take a regular recipe of vanilla and just add the fruit to it, or do you have to add extra sugar?

I have some ripe mangoes and I am dying to make some mango ice cream (for some reason... it just sounds wonderful, never tried it before).

I made some "Heath Bar" ice cream a week or so ago.... to die for! Vanilla base and halfway through freezing, I added some Heath Bar crumbles!! Ahhhhhh!

Timely thread! Right this very moment I'm looking through the ice cream recipes I have. Tomorrow we will be making fresh peach ice cream. A special day for sure as we don't do this very often. My GD is coming tomorrow and has not had homemade ice cream ever! I just found this out so Bubbe and Nono have to make sure the child knows what good ice cream is ;-)...my excuse for indulging.

Oh and Linda, we will not be "cranking" this ice cream. The worlds greatest invention is the electric ice cream maker. Gone are the days of rock salt and cranking on the porch. Good memories but it's just to hot.

Does anyone have a great T&T peach ice cream recipe?

Mint chocolate chip on a sugar cone. My very favorite.

P.S. When you start a poll like this one, what becomes of the responses? How do you use them?

Hi dedtired,

Typically the responses are used as content -- like the slideshow "15 of Your Favorite Indoor Plants" that you can see linked on every forum under the What's New on GardenWeb area.

Oh yeah, homemade ice cream is definitely worth the trouble.

I like the mocha brownie chunk, I got the recipe here. Elery loves butter pecan, I make it with brown sugar from another recipe I also got here.

I have one of those little Cuisinart ice cream makers that you put the insert in the freezer. 20 minutes and I can have ice cream, or that prickly pear sorbet that Sol pointed me to, or frozen yogurt or a zillion things.

Oh yeah, definitely worth it.

I seldom top ice cream, although I've been known to make a chocolate malted out of it. The Monkey Princess and Bruvver like fudge sauce for their ice cream, and sprinkles.

Annie, I too, have a little Cuisinart ice cream maker. It takes me 25 - 30 minutes to make a batch. The strangest thing though is that the recipes from the manual tend to be too big for the little maker. If I use a full recipe the contents tend to overflow and I have to keep pushing them back down from the top opening. It is a good ice cream maker and its size is probably the only thing I don't like about it. Do you have the same experiment?

By the way, we love vanilla chocolate chip ice cream.

YUMM! Homemade is definitely worth it. My most requested recipe is for a chili chocolate ice cream. It has a hint of heat and most people can't figure it out and keep tasting.

Al, I haven't used a single recipe from the manual, but I've tried several from friends or posted here.

You are right, though, many recipes make more than will fit in the little container.

Homemade ice cream is most definitely "worth it!" I haven't bought ice cream since I got my little Cuisinart ice cream maker a couple years ago. I bought a copy of The Perfect Scoop at the same time and have loved all the recipes so far. David Lebovitz is an ice cream genius!

My favorite ice cream is custard based vanilla bean (I'm boring), but I love fruit ice creams. Raspberry ice cream with just picked raspberries on top is a fantastic summer treat. Now I have to go get a bowl of ice cream, thanks for the suggestion!

compumom, it's from Gourmet August 1993. Link below.

If you need peppers I'd be happy to mail you a few - I bought way too many to use before they "expire". Just email me through my page

Here is a link that might be useful: Chocolate Chili Ice cream

I bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker just a few weeks ago. I've made a blueberry ice cream that was really good, and I made lyndaluu's very berry sorbet - THAT was amazing!

I did a little internet research, and it seems that the ice cream results in a creamier texture if you don't overfill the bowl of the ice cream maker. Half- to two-thirds full is all you should fill it. So when I make the vanilla ice cream (or gelato... not sure which yet), I'll definitely make sure I leave plenty of room for it to churn! :D
