Wow. I can't believe that July is almost over!

I am hoping to get to a farmers market tomorrow and get some canning tomatoes. I have tomatoes on my vines, but they are still green and I am out of salsa! Yikes!

If I have time I may get to a batch of Habanero Gold, too. I have turned my daughter-in-law into an HG addict!

Other than that no huge plans for the weekend.

Linda, I need to make salsa also. Not sure that the main crop of local tomatoes are ready here just yet.

Late tomorrow afternoon we are headed over to a friends home for a boat ride and dinner. I need to come up with a hostess gift for her.
Sunday should be quiet, maybe give my dog a bath in the lake and catch a few rays...

Working today.

We have a party tomorrow night; I need to make an appetizer to take and I'm trying to come up with something different rather than my Marmalade Meatballs. Also need a little gift for the birthday man.

Linda, I've been threatening to make more of that HG too; love it on a bagel w/cream cheese.

Nancy have a fun boat ride. So what kind of hostess gift will you give?

OH, who posted about giving a high heel pie/cake server as a hostess gift?

Well that intrigued me so I googled it and bought two of them in red; one for me and one as a xmas gift for a girlfriend of mine. I never knew these existed so thank you to whoever it was that mentioned it. They already arrived and I love them. What an excellent gift!

I'm getting most of my busy work done as early as possible to avoid the heat and have taken to doing housework late at night!. I washed the kitchen floor the other night at 10:00 pm! I am feeling very positive about this new week. I have some paperwork to do today, but I have all day to do it in. Have a good lunch Katie and enjoy your gardening! I just got back from a busy day, starting with my morning Pilates after which I attended another of those charity lunches by the club to which I belong. It was held again outdoors in the Orchid Garden estate, where I met up with my English girlfriends. We had a nice time chatting, dining on the lovely buffet and listening to music provided by a young Englishman who crooned in the styles of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. His act was very polished and the ladies loved him! After the raffles in which we didn't win anything I took a little walk through the garden on the way back out to my car and got a couple of pics of the coffee bush there. But it was a very young and small one so it had just a few flowers and no coffee beans as yet. However the rest of the garden was as lovely as ever. It's a holiday here..."Dia de Canarias", or Canary Islands Day when the local people celebrate their heritage with fiestas and celebrations. A few small pics: The Crooner...........First course of buffet .....The Guests Wolf didn't want to come as he's not keen on attending such events and prefers to be home where it's quieter LOL. It's been a lovely day, sky overcast but warm and humid. Now I'm ready for a siesta! Have a good and safe weekend everyone! SharonCb

When the kiddies were young, we took them to a student preview. DS #2 fell asleep in the car on the way there. He woke up crying I dont want to sit through a three hour opera!. The minute the house lights went down, and the curtain up on the castle scene, his eyes got big and he was enthralled through intermission. We sneaked down from nosebleed to third row center after intermission. After the show he proclaimed mom, if I can sit here, I want to go to operas! Ka-ching, ka-ching.um grow up a bit, kid when you can sit through the Ring cycle, well add you to our subscription. LindaC, every time there is an empty seat by us, I put you there in spirit. Because of our garden, we now have a hive on our side yard (pretty sure its Euro not African beasties) and DH wants to keep it but move it down to the bottom of the garden. May not be doable, but hell try. Its next to a row of oleanders and he says honey from those blossoms are toxic, so we wont be harvesting any. Saturday we started setting up our sukkah or booth for the Biblical Festival of the Tabernacles which starts Oct 13th. We come up with humorous decorative themes remodeling (hanging power tools from the roof), disco, my favorite a few years ago was mentally ill bible heroes. Lots of those! This year Im thinking it would be topical to choose either Jewish bankers (good AND bad) or Jewish political candidates. LOL. Last night we took the kids, as part of DS #1s bday present, to see The Capitol Steps; he is into politics. We went out to a good Japanese restaurant, his favorite, before hand. Good laughs. Poor kids bday falls on Yom Kippur eve this year. Bound to happen as he was born the day after YK. Today DH and I are going to a swap meet to pick up more parts for the sukkah. I think Ill put up a pizza (Dougs fault) for tonight. I have to start planning Yom Kippurs dinner meal on Wednesday nightDS #1 has asked for salmon in puff pastry, and I suggested it would be good with an avgolemono sauce, with orzo pilaf on the side he is delighted. Whew, it was easy doing this on Word, with the TGIF thread open in another window, then cutting and pasting! Clinking with water to everyone (big water drinker)!

Still clear skies, mostly, but getting colder. The leaves are mostly down. I'm getting out the winter clothes and wrapping the backyard up for another Oregon rainy season. We are hoping for snow this year, after four years with hardly a trace. My son wants to build a microscope this weekend, so we'll do that. My daughter may want to go to the darkroom. I want to take one early morning and go for a bike ride. I might go explore some of the steep windy roads in the West Hill that lead to the zoo. Or just do laps up my local hill, less scenic but a more efficient workout. Sometimes I wear a heart rate monitor on these rides. Afterwards I can look at the data and see how my heart rate spiked when the road turned upwards or when the speed rose. The rule of thumb is that your maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. I think that is bunkum, or at least that it varies so much between individuals that it is no rule at all. I have gotten my heart rate up to 200 beats/ minute, only for a few seconds, but those were exhilarating seconds. On a pretty routine basis, I ride at 170 bpm which is 85% of my max heart rate, or a. "submaximal" heart rate. There is a whole science of training by heart rate - you are supposed to spend X time at 80%+ of max, Y time at 60%, and so on. I don't pay attention to that. I just like to get up to 170 bpm frequently and see if anything untoward happens. It is kind of my personal security blanket. There is another test you can do, which is a little more useful. You get your heart rate up to 150 bpm or so, which might mean a few minutes of jumping jacks or chopping wood or running fast. Then stop, sit down, and see how long it takes for your heart rate to settle down to 100 bpm. It should only take one or two minutes. If your heart continues to beat at a high rate for much longer, that is a worrisome sign. This is called "recovery heart rate". Finally, there is "resting pulse". The true resting pulse is taken when you are laying down and completely relaxed. In the morning, right after waking up, is a good time. Some people have a high resting pulse, some a lower one. The interesting thing is how it changes. If you get serious about exercise, you can lower your resting pulse quite dramatically. That is a sign that your heart has become more efficient, which is a good thing. I've been thinking a lot about getting older. My kids are only teenagers, and I'm fifty. I don't know when they will have kids. When I have grandchildren, I want to take them riding and skiing and fishing. That means I will have to be strong and athletic into my seventies. Gulp. My dad had a heart attack in his mid seventies. My neighbor is seventy-five and has CHF and PAH. I've got a lot of work to do, anyway that is how it feels, so I get on the bike every day and push until it hurts. It actually is kind of pleasant to hurt. I think I've learned a little about masochism. But I digress. What were we talking about? Cooking. I'm going to go through my Momofuku cookbook and make some Asian comfort food. Daughter is getting interested in sushi so we'll make some basic rolls. Son is a big ramen fan, we'll roast some pork and leeks and make a big hot bowlful. I'll make some meals for my neighbor with the health problems. And I think I will try baking bread again. I was on a low-carb kick this summer, but it turns out I need some carbs. Carbs = glycogen. Glycogen = muscle energy for efforts longer than a few minutes. No carbs = weak muscles. Doesn't work for me.

Linda, this may be the year I finally try Annies Salsa.... I am getting more comfortable with jams and jellies and pickles, so if I can get it together I will put it up next week.

We just got back from the last day of lacrosse camp - what a super experience this has been and the kids will definitely be taking the next one. This afternoon I am putting up some of the peachy stuff in jars. I am supposed to go to a political fundraiser tonight, but I really am not in the mood even if they ARE serving some fab wines. Tomorrow it is finally going to be cool enough to do some yard work without heatstroke setting in, so it will be limb trimming, shrub trimming, etc Sunday is an outing with several of the girls to a patio bar/restaurant that has a Buffett cover band, great food and frou-frou drinks. Should be a blast.

Happy Friday!
Not much going on here this weekend except heat! We are supposed to hit 101 this weekend. I am having people over for a BBQ on Sat but in an effort to keep the house cooler it will be smoked meat, corn on the cob cooked outside, salads and ice cream for dessert.

Yard work in the mornings, housework in the afternoons, margaritas in the evening. I don't plan to leave our place all weekend long. Its been a long time since we stayed home all weekend and I am looking forward to it. I will live vicariously through every body else this weekend. Have Fun!

Linda - if you are planning to go to the Minneapolis Farmer's Market for tomatoes - don't make the trip. I just called my friend that I help on the weekends there. She is also there on Friday. The tomatoes are scarce and still very expensive.

I will be there early tomorrow (6:00am)and could call you and give you an "in person" report if you would like. You can email me thru my member page with your number - and an time that is okay to call you!

Hope the salsa turns out! Looks like I'm working the weekend alone. Probably short on material or I'd have help. A gal friend that moved away looking for work is home for a wedding and will be around a few days.

It's raspberry time and I need to make a couple of batches for gifts!
No plans this weekend I was driving to Chicago, but a nasty sinus infection put the kibosh on that.
Maybe a "jammin" weekend.

Linda, tomatoes aren't ready here yet either, just a few for eating fresh, but nothing in amounts that I could can. hang in there a few more weeks. As for HG, I have 3 jars of it on my counter right now, I ought to buy bagels and cream cheese...

Nancy, enjoy the boat ride. The lakes are so warm and nice this year, it should be lovely. Hostess gift? Um, I'm really bad at that so I'm no help, but I know you have wonderfully talented pottery makers near you, so maybe?

shaun, Happy Birthday to the birthday boy and have a great party.

Alexa, go ahead and try the salsa, it's so easy and it can be "adjusted" in heat and sweetness to whatever your family likes. The only real work is chopping tomatoes, I even do the onions and peppers in the food processor, but I like big chunks of tomato, so I peel, scoop out the goo with my thumbs and chop 'em all by hand. If you don't mind thinner salsa with smaller pieces you could probably chop the tomatoes in the food processor too, but I'm too picky, LOL.
And have fun with the girls.

Melissa, stay cool and definitely have ice cream and margaritas...

Michael/Lyra, enjoy the visit with your old friend.

Here, I'm picking up The Princess after work. We're going to McDonald's for supper, then to my house to swim in the pool. Tomorrow we'll go out for breakfast, run to the farm market, then go pick Amanda and Bruvver up so I can take Amanda in to complete her bridal registries. After that it's garden work. Hmmmm.....maybe I should check the garden first, THEN the farm market, but I know I don't have sweet corn ready right now.

Sunday I'm canning sweet relish and strawberry jam, maybe some blueberry syrup if I have enough time and depending on what else is in the garden that needs to be "dealt with".

You industrious types are making me feel guilty!

I'm at the cottage and have done no canning whatsoever since I did strawberry jam. I'm worried I've missed the raspberries and dills are looming!

Meredith and 6 of her GF's are coming to the cottage this weekend. It's a long weekend here so they are here for three days! Should be fun but heaven help the septic!!!!

Sharon, your septic comment cracked me up... we used to worry about ours whenever we had a gang here. A few years ago we had to replace.

I picked up some nice kitchen tools for the hostess gift. I know she'll like them.

I will say a prayer for the survival of the septic tank for you Sharon. Six GF=no sleep, no hot water. You are a good Mommy.

No big plans here, as we are somewhat restricted this weekend. We are on the Pond and Garden tour this Sunday, so I have "gardenkeeping" to do before, but it will be a queit evening here tonight. The pooch, yes, the dog is going on a sleep over tonight. We are going on a two week vacation next month, so Dilly is spending a trial night with some friends who will have him while we are gone. The sitter wants him acclimated to her house well before.

Saturday I am heading tothe nursery to replace some plants that have crapped out. Heck, this is too late to have a garden tour. And after tens years of tours, this is my last one, I swear. (said that last year too).

Sharon, good luck to the septic, LOL.

I distinctly remember a group of us staying at Sherry's (sheshebop) and she had to have the septic tank pumped, right in the middle of a multi-day get together. I don't think the poor septic tank guy will ever be the same. (grin)

Teresa, thanks for the heads up on the Mpls. Farmer's Market. I doubt I'll make that trip this time, but I do want to get down there sometime in the next month and get some goodies!

I'll probably just check out a couple of the local markets. They're small, but you never know what you might find.

Sharon, Meredith's sleepover sounds like a blast. I am sure you'll be dead tired afterwards, tho! Keeping my fingers crossed that the septic holds out!

Peppi, I bet your pond and garden will be the hit of the tour! (I also bet you'll be on the tour next year! LOL)

Linda-- yep, it's a good weekend for canning-- Salsa's on my list of "to dos" also , just waiting for the oldest DD's garden to ripen up enough tomatoes.

relish picked up a few extras & a dz ears of just pickecd corn @ Morgan's to do Corn relish. Sunday is breakfast with a couple girlfriends & then depending on how the hips are we may
go to the Sterling Renaissance Festival-- it's a must get to at least once a summer.

I sure hope the rest of the weekend goes better than today. I'm in the midst of a bathroom reno. It's been going great. Contractor if terrific. Today I said "where's the box with the handheld shower head?" I got a blank look. The idiot woman at the plumbing supply place screwed up the order. Ugh. Some things can be fixed and others can't. I am bummed.

Oh well. I have been spending too much time at my mom's house hiding from the contractor and taking showers. We are tired of each other.

Niece #3 and her two daughters are coming to visit Mom this weekend so I will be over there all weekend, too. Aaaaa! I need a break. I do adore my niece and the girls and I enjoy seeing them -- I just wish it weren't this weekend.

Your welcome, shaun -- I'm the one who posted about the high heeled cake/pie server hostess gift. I have a leopard one, recently gifted someone with a zebra, gave my sister in law a red one, and have an extra leopard in my gift closet. They really are cute.

It isn't Friday, but I thought I'd pop in and say hi! Sounds like everyone has some fine weekends planned.

We arrived home at midnight last night (friday) from our trip to VA, unloaded a few things from the RV section of the horse trailer and crawled into bed after our 17 hour drive.

Worked outside this AM until the 100 degrees got to me and chased me inside where I'm catching up on mail. I plan on working outside from about 6-9 each morning and then I'm just praying that the AC keeps chugging along!
